Jodi Picoult fumes as Hollywood drops her film over 'radioactive' theme

Beloved author Jodi Picoult launched a scorched earth tirade against Hollywood elites for 'bending the knee' and refusing to create movies that could upset President Trump. The bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper slapped down an 'unnamed streaming service' in a video shared to TikTok after plans to create a movie from her 2021 novel were suddenly abandoned. 'Today I found out after four years they have decided to cancel the project because "with the new regime they don't want to do a storyline around Covid,"' she said on Friday. While Picoult did not explicitly name the streaming service, it is widely known that Netflix acquired the rights to her Covid-era tome Wish You Were Here back. The book centers around a NYC woman in her late-20s woman whose life is upended by the arrival of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. Picoult was responding to a question on TikTok about why more of her books haven't been turned into movies. 'This is what I mean when I say even places that are considered to be very liberal, like Hollywood, are terrified of the Trump administration,' she said. 'They think there is going to be backlash if they don't bend the knee.' Trump has used hardball negotiating tactics during his second term to force CEOs and industries into making dramatic concessions. He even slapped extraordinary tariffs on some of America's closest allies. But in a display of fondness for his favorite films, Trump has tried to remake Hollywood in his own image while railing against the cinema hub for its 'wokeness.' He threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign-made films in an effort to bring productions back to Hollywood, warning: 'The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death.' Trump also appointed several Ambassadors to Hollywood - right-leaning celebrities who endorsed him during his campaign, including Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone. But Picoult argues Trump's involvement has softened the industry, which once proudly opposed to the former reality TV star, and made executives and bigwigs more risk-averse. To make matters worse for Picoult, members of the Trump administration have been openly critical of the handling of the Covid pandemic in the United States. Trump himself has promoted a popular theory that the virus began in a lab in Wuhan, China. The book centers around a late-20s woman living in New York City whose life is upended by the arrival of the Covid pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns Most recently, his administration limited approval for annual Covid booster shots to only seniors and others at high risk of falling ill with the virus. 'I guess that means I better go out and write a book about an anti-vaxxer who is married to someone who thinks Ukraine started the war against itself, and they have a baby who drinks raw milk,' Picoult said. 'You'll want to make that, right Hollywood?' Picoult's criticism marks the latest in a string of accusations that Hollywood has been tip-toeing on egg shells around angering Trump during this administration. Oscar-nominated film The Apprentice, based on Trump's early years as an up-and-coming businessman, struggled to secure a streaming deal after Trump criticized the film. 'It's hard to be creative when you're afraid,' Tom Nunan, from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, told the Los Angeles Times. 'I don't think that people have really figured out what to do yet, how to express themselves or what's going to be the most effective.' Picoult was inundated with support from fans who were concerned Netflix would have butchered the adaption and were upset with how Hollywood changed the ending of her last work for the screen. 'After they ruined My Sister's Keeper, I'll stick to just reading them,' one supportive fan wrote. In the comments section of her post, Picoult was asked about another book she wrote, Sing You Home, which followed the story of a woman who wanted to use frozen embryos she created with her ex-husband with her new wife. The rights to the movie were acquired by Ellen DeGeneres back in 2011. A fan asked: 'What ever happened to that?' Picoult responded with a shocking take against Ellen, writing: 'There is not enough alcohol in the world to tell that story.'

It could be that some New Hampshire Republicans just need to do a little more reading

"The far right now dominating the American Republican Party is selling an idea of liberty that in practice amounts to unfettered freedom but only for the like-minded." (Getty Images) I don't spend a lot of time thinking about why Democratic politicians struggle so much to connect with working-class voters. That's for the party leaders and candidates to figure out. But it's entirely possible that Fyodor Dostoyevsky partially diagnosed the problem almost 150 years ago, when he wrote in 'The Brothers Karamazov': 'The more I love humanity in general, the less I love man in particular.' Recent Republican success winning over the working class is a little easier to understand considering America's Puritan roots. The right has long made political hay by convincing millions of voters that the degradation of society is most evident not in corrupt fiscal policies but in expressions of human sexuality. Every legislative session has its examples, and this year one of them is a book banning bill now headed to the governor's desk. House Bill 324 is touted by conservatives as 'parental rights' legislation meant to keep certain books out of the hands of impressionable young people. It reads: 'This bill prohibits material that is obscene or harmful to minors in schools and creates a procedure for removal and cause of action.' 'Obscene,' of course, always refers to sexuality and not the cherished Americana of extreme violence. And, importantly, it does not encompass the most glaring national obscenity: economic inequality. Whether or not you buy the Republican argument that HB 324 targets only 'flat-out pornography' in schools — which seems unlikely because that's already covered under New Hampshire's existing obscenity laws — author Jodi Picoult is correct in her assessment of the bill's true intent and the price we all pay for censorship: 'These parents will tell you that the books are exposing kids to topics that are salacious or revolutionary. What kids are really being exposed to are lives and mindsets different from their own, which creates compassion and empathy.' The bottom line is that what Republican New Hampshire lawmakers — and many conservative parents — don't like is LGBTQ themes in literature. Why? Because they are convinced that the four horsemen of the American apocalypse will ride into town dressed in drag. But the riders they should worry about have always been with us, gulping the rarefied air of Pullman palace cars and private jet cabins. The American right's fixation on sexuality is bad enough on its own, but it is downright confounding when coupled with Republican-backed efforts that exacerbate economic inequality. Only one of those things is an existential threat to the American experiment, and I promise you it's not Picoult's 'Nineteen Minutes.' HB 324 is an unnecessary bill that exists only to scratch the Republican itch to crush content it deems symbolic of Western decline. But the real threats to society are found elsewhere. For example, consider New Hampshire Republicans' myopic repeal of the Interest and Dividends Tax, an action undertaken in service to the state's economic elite. That move should be constantly discussed and dissected in this state, especially now as lawmakers work at cutting hundreds of millions from the next state budget. But conservatives would rather fish in libraries for words and themes to be offended by. Meanwhile, those with the least in New Hampshire are on the threshold of fresh harm from the right's cold budget priorities. If you want more evidence of this dynamic, consider the 'big beautiful bill' now in the works in Washington, D.C. Once again, a few will win and the struggling many will lose. But the trick to sneaking garbage like that through is to make people look for threats in the wrong places. Immigrants, diversity programs, books with titles like 'Gender Queer.' Republican voters are made to believe that those are the issues pulling at America's seams and not the obvious culprit: the 1 percent's scorched-earth pursuit of limitless wealth. Riding shotgun with all of this is the rot of hypocrisy. The far right now dominating the American Republican Party is selling an idea of liberty that in practice amounts to unfettered freedom but only for the like-minded. That is why the party so consistently defends bigots and punches down on the vulnerable. You can see evidence of this in the always-uneven Republican application of 'local control.' How is HB 324 in alignment with local control? How are any of the laws targeting transgender rights in alignment? Well, they're not, because 'local control' isn't a Republican principle. It's a label applied or removed as a matter of philosophical convenience. The New Hampshire Legislature's latest go at book banning is unsurprising, considering the puritanical forces as old as the nation itself that continue to influence conservative ideology. But if they're as concerned about the degradation of society as they say, one can only hope that they'll realize before it's too late that the call is coming from inside their house. Because sexual content in a novel isn't going to be America's undoing, but the continuation of policies that increase the nation's already obscene levels of economic inequality almost certainly will.

6 books restricted in St. Johns County schools after arguments to have them banned

The St. Johns County School District is not adding six more books to its list of more than 60 it says have been removed from schools. Instead, the books will be added onto the more than 29 books restricted to certain grade levels, particularly high schools. The school board heard arguments to have them removed from school library shelves after a district committee had previously voted to have them restricted to high schools. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] This is a list of the books now being given a new set of restrictions: Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, now restricted to grades 9-12 with parents' permission Strange Truth by Maggie Thrash, now restricted to grades 9-12 with parents' permission Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas, now restricted to grades 9-12 with parents' permission Half Of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, now restricted to grades 11-12 with parents' permission Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout, now restricted to grades 11-12 with parents' permission Normal People by Sally Rooney, now restricted to grades 11-12 with parents' permission Those who argued for the removal of these books brought up a number of problems they had with their content, from the use of vulgar language to sexual material and mentions of drug and alcohol abuse. 'Pornography is considered contraband, but you can check it out at the school library,' one of the women opposing the books said during the school board hearing. But there were many more parents and neighbors who gave a case to keep the books during the meeting. 'A single person should not dictate what books another's children are allowed to read,' one of them told school board members. Action News Jax has been telling you about back-and-forth calls to ban and keep books in St. Johns County schools for more than a year. Last May, we told you when the school board voted to restrict three other books to high schools, including popular titles like Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. The Florida Department of Education says more than 700 books were removed from school districts around the state last year. Six of those books were removed in St. Johns County. The school board has had more than five meetings since 2022 to hear community arguments to ban books. The school district has a list of more than 100 books to recently face objections in the county.
