5 Mamelodi Sundowns players left out of Club World Cup squad

BIG NAMES LEFT OUT Mamelodi Sundowns announced their Club World Cup squad, leaving out key players like Jody February (pictured), Thapelo Maseko and Matías Esquivel. Photo: Ryan Wilkisky/BackpagePix With the Club World Cup kicking off in the USA on Saturday, there were a number of big-name omissions in the Mamelodi Sundowns squad, which will be hoping to make South Africa proud. With Sundowns' first match a week, scheduled for June 10, against Ulsan HD in Orlando, Florida, it will be with a powerful 26-player squad. As with any squad, there will always be a number of players left disappointed by being left out. Themba Zwane will lead Sundowns at the tournament, with Ronwen Williams handling the vice-captaincy duties.

Mamelodi Sundowns transfer news: Fringe 'keeper signs new deal

Mamelodi Sundowns third choice goalkeeper Jody February has seen his contract extended by the club. February's contract was set to expire on 30 June but Sundowns had an option to extend it for a further year. And after careful consideration, the Sundowns hierarchy together with technical team decided to retain him. February has recently been given a chance to showcase his talent in the Sundowns starting line-up. However, with Ronwen Williams still the club's No.1 and Denis Onyango behind him, February remains further down the pecking order. This past season, the 29-year-old goalkeeper made seven appearances across all competitions for the Brazilians. February conceded five goals and kept three cleansheets from the said seven competitive matches he played. Overall, the former Ajax Cape Town shot-stopper has featured just eight times and kept just three cleansheets during his time with the Tshwane giants. February joins a growing list of players whose contracts have been renewed by Sundowns, including Mosa Lebusa and Thapelo Morena among others. Sundowns decide to keep former SA international

Mamelodi Sundowns should not be expected to make new goalkeeping signings anytime soon. Staying the 28-year-old extended time out of the matchday squads, the Betway Premiership champions have decided to exercise his one-year contract extension. 'Jody February will stay with Mamelodi Sundowns beyond the current season,' his agent Makaab said. 'He signed a one-year extension with the club. 'This is an opportunity for Jody to fight for his place in the starting line-up at Sundowns. This season, he got some minutes, and it's something to build on going forward,' Makaab told FARPost. 'But also, we have to thank Sundowns for showing faith in him once again because he is a talented player.'
