Reds rookie fireballer Chase Burns (elbow) lands on IL

August 15 - The Cincinnati Reds placed rookie right-hander Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list Friday with an elbow issue. The move is retroactive to Tuesday for Burns, who was diagnosed with a Grade 1 right flexor strain. Burns, 22, is 0-3 with a 5.24 ERA in eight starts since making his major league debut on June 24. He struck out exactly 10 batters in four of his last five starts, pushing his season total to 57 in 34 1/3 innings. Cincinnati selected Burns with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest. The Reds recalled left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa, 27, from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding transaction. --Field Level Media

Reds place rookie Chase Burns on IL with flexor strain

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds placed right-handed rookie starter Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list Friday with a grade 1 right flexor strain. The No. 2 pick in last year's draft has made eight starts this season and had recorded at least 10 strikeouts in four of his last five starts, with the lone exception coming in the game at Bristol Motor Speedway against the Atlanta Braves that was postponed in the bottom of the first. Burns struck out two of the three batters he faced in that game. Advertisement With Hunter Greene returning to the Reds' rotation on Wednesday, Burns was expected to move to the bullpen, but instead is now on the IL. The Reds recalled left-hander Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Louisville to join the bullpen and replace Burns on the roster. Burns last start was on Aug. 8 in Pittsburgh. He went six innings and allowed just one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk, but didn't factor in the decision. Overall this season, he's 0-3 with a 5.24 ERA. That ERA, though, is inflated by his second big-league outing that saw him give up five earned runs (and seven total) in just one-third of an inning against the Boston Red Sox. The Reds suspected the Red Sox saw Burns was tipping his pitches. He struck out seven Philadelphia Phillies and allowed just one run on two hits in 4 2/3 innings in his next start. In his 34 1/3 MLB innings, Burns has 57 strikeouts and 13 walks. His ERA with the start in Boston excluded is 3.97. After flying through the minor leagues, Burns struck out the first four batters he faced in the big leagues in his MLB debut on June 24 against the New York Yankees, including a strikeout of Aaron Judge to finish off his first inning. While the Reds weren't counting on Burns staying in the rotation — he has thrown 100 1/3 innings between the minors and majors this season, one out more than he threw as a junior at Wake Forest in 2024. Earlier this week, Reds manager Terry Francona said the team hoped Burns would pitch until the end of the season, using the move to the bullpen as a way to keep his innings down. Spot the pattern.
