Recent Report is Damning for Anthony Volpe

Recent Report is Damning for Anthony Volpe originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the past week, the New York Yankees have added two starting-caliber position players. Ryan McMahon has had an immediate impact, and Amed Rosario's versatility should get him a playing time almost every day. The front office still wants to add more firepower. According to MLB Insider Joel Sherman, 'No one should be surprised if they add one more bat before the deadline, preferably right-handed with the ability to play shortstop.' This is an indictment of Anthony Volpe. 'Outside executives say the Yankees still have interest in obtaining a player offering something from the buffet of defense, righty hitting and/or speed.' He is supposed to be the young, fast, defensive wizard at shortstop who can also hit at the top of the lineup. That has not been the case so far. Having this exact type of player on the roster already tells me they are looking for a short-term fix. Volpe is way too young for them to be ready to give up on him. Having more support could take some of the pressure off his shoulders and give him someone else to learn from. After already trading for multiple hitters and Clarke Schmidt going down, it makes a ton of sense for the team to go after pitching help. But during trade deadline season, rumors like these do not come out of nowhere. In ESPN's most up-to-date ranking of players that should be available right now, none of them seemed to fit this billing. Many of the bats are lefties or outfielders. If the Yankees are going to try and swing another trade, it could be a player completely off the radar. Fans might not expect the young bat they find, but insiders or rival execs might not be expecting the pitching help they snag, if that is the route they go. There are only a few days left. It feels like another deal is going to get done, but it is anybody's guess where the Yankees direct their attention. No matter what else happens during deadline season this year, the Yankees looking for a better version of Volpe while he is right here should send shock waves through his camp. Report: Mets Acquired Gregory Soto Specifically To Be Shohei Ohtani, Bryce Harper Slayer in Playoffs

The New York Mets badly needed another competent lefty in the bullpen for the second half. However, a new report suggests that they specifically targeted Gregory Soto because of his potential to shut down some monster bats in the playoffs. On Friday, the Mets made their first big splash before next week's MLB trade deadline. Acquiring Orioles reliever Soto for a pair of minor leaguers. Not only does Soto give the club a very nice lefty combo with Brooks Raley, but the 30-year-old has succeeded under the pressure of finishing games. Both his All-Star appearances (2021 and 2022) came as the Tigers' closer. It was a trade that received praise from MLB analysts. However, on Saturday, New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman detailed an even more important reason why he was at the top reliever wish list. The team will face some outstanding left-handed hitters in the second half and the playoffs. And the combo of Raley and Soto could be those sluggers' kryptonite. Gregory Soto stats: 3.96 ERA, 1.294 WHIP, 44 strikeouts, 18 walks 'They have to get through Philadelphia to win the division. And to do that, you've got to get through Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber,' Sherman began by saying in a new YouTube post. 'If you don't have good lefties against them, it's problematic. 'The Dodgers last year, the team that played them the best in the playoffs was the Padres. Who did the Padres get at the trade deadline? Among others, they got Tanner Scott, who was kind of a Shohei Ohtani slayer. 1-9 for his career during the regular season, then in the postseason, he's 0-4 with four strikeouts. 'Ohtani is a combined 1-11 against Raley and Soto. 1-6 against Raley, 0-5 against Soto. Harper hasn't even faced Soto. But Schwarber's 0-2 against him and 0-6 with three strikeouts versus Raley. [Freddie] Freeman is a combined 2-12 versus Raley and Soto. Small samples, but consider who the Mets have to go through to get to [get to the World Series].' Gregory Soto contract: One year, $1.8 million That is huge for the Mets to be able to throw two impactful lefties at the Dodgers and Phillies' top hitters in key late-inning moments. However, Sherman also noted that while left-handed hitters have a .138 average against Soto this season, his high walk rate can make his outings an adventure. 'I had an executive the other day who had him on his team say to me, 'He's the most likely guy to throw a shutout inning by hitting one, walking two, and striking out three.' It's a bit of a tightrope walk with him. But the stuff is real,' Sherman said. Yankees make roster move after bullpen strategy backfires in Atlanta

Yankees make roster move after bullpen strategy backfires in Atlanta originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Yankees' sketchy pitching plan backfired Friday night, and now they need to scramble again to cover themselves. According to The New York Post's Joel Sherman, the team is designating reliever RIco Garcia for assignment after Thursday night's bullpen scramble in Atlanta. Garcia was one of four relievers used in the 8–1 loss, a self-inflicted mess following the All-Star break. The Yankees chose to open the second half with a bullpen game. After four days off. With a rotation already thinned by injury. J.T. Brubaker handled three innings in his debut. Garcia covered one. Ian Hamilton opened. It didn't work. And now the Yankees are short an arm again. This wasn't a surprise. It was preventable. They could have recalled a lengthened starter from Triple-A. Or gone with Will Warren, who last pitched on Sunday. Or Marcus Stroman, who pitched Friday and was lined up on extra rest. Instead, they used four relievers in Game 1 of a road trip and burned enough innings that someone had to go. Garcia was the odd man out. He'd just been picked up last week from the Mets, who DFA'd him as well. He has thrown 15.2 solid innings this year with a 3.45 ERA, but he was always an emergency arm they could cut if they needed to. So now the Yankees are scrambling again. Max Fried has been pushed back to the Toronto series. Cam Schlittler was scratched Friday with arm discomfort, but the Yankees are hopeful they will get him a start in the Blue Jays series as well. And with two games still to play in Atlanta, then a three-game series in Toronto, the Yankees are down to hoping someone steps up. Or steps in. The trade deadline is less than two weeks away, but the Yankees need to get there. Burning through the bullpen on the first day of the second half of the season wasn't a great start. And now they need another arm. Again This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 19, 2025, where it first appeared.
