Des Moines Bishop comments on new pope
DES MOINES, Iowa — Bishop William Joensen with the Des Moines Diocese shared his reaction to the selection of a new pope at a meeting Thursday afternoon. Joensen said that Pope Leo XIV will bring unity to the catholic church. 'And so may be that unifying figure that I know Pope Francis and his predecessors aspired to be. But maybe now, as one from the Midwest, we like to think that we kind of can carry that balance between the coasts and now, you know, on a global perspective that Pope Leo will bring that charism to the church, unity within the church, larger unity and a social and, God willing, peace on a geopolitical scale as well to be an ambassador of peace,' Joensen said. Beloved urban garden prepares for more crops, crowds in 2025 Joensen hopes that Pope Leo XIV's American roots will help attract young people to the church. 'We would certainly hope that it would light a fire as we were looking for, you know, to, again, appeal to our young people in particular. But to, I think, capture their imaginations and their intention that though we are a universal church, is very much a church that is presented as one of the nations who the faithful are among the world's most populous Catholic countries,' Joensen said. Joensen also hopes that Pope Leo XIV will visit Iowa. 'Oh, absolutely. You know, we want to bring him here as soon as we can. You know, I think that would just be electric and you know that it'll be interesting. What would be his emphasis as he comes here and what would he care to do? But may he make a visit to Chicago?' Joensen said. What to know about I-35/80 ramp closures that start Monday
DES MOINES, Iowa — A busy corridor of I-35/80 in the western part of the Des Moines metro will experience some big changes Monday night that will force some drivers to detour their routes until mid-August. The Iowa Department of Transportation will be closing the southbound/westbound on-ramp to the interstate at Hickman Avenue (Highway 6) and the southbound/westbound off-ramp to the interstate at University Avenue. The closure is slated to begin at 9:00 p.m. on Monday and last until August 19th, according to the DOT. Eagle Grove Pharmacy seeks help from lawmakers to stay open Traffic can use the marked detours. The closures are being done to allow the ramps to be redone and for the addition of 36 feet of paving in the southbound/westbound lanes. The DOT says the extra paved area will make it possible to achieve the ultimate four-lane design, and lanes will be opened in their final configuration as they are able. All of the lanes are expected to be open in 2027. A closure in May will overlap with this work and include the closure of the eastbound/northbound on-ramp to I-35/80 from Hickman Avenue and the eastbound/northbound off-ramp to Douglas Avenue. That begins on May 5th and will last for 100 days. Detours will be marked for drivers.
