Hawkins wins, keeps Bogenpohl in the fold

Hello everyone, I'm Dan Lucy on the Ozarks First digital desk. Missouri State baseball coach Joey Hawkins first game of next season won't be for another eight and a half months. But the Bears boss already has his first win. MoState slugger Caden Bogenpohl says he will return to Springfield next season. Bogenpohl will be a draft eligible junior next season and will be a big key for Hawkins and the Bears. As a sophomore, Bogenpohl hit .296 with 13 homers and 44 RBI. He played in all 54 games, despite being banged up late in the season. The 6-foot-6 center fielder was getting all kinds of attention from schools who wanted him to enter the transfer portal and leave the Bears. Bogenpohl was not biting. Caden Bogenpohl/Returning to Bears (didn't want to play any other place)Joey Hawkins/Missouri State coach (great news) The way Joey Hawkins sees it, Bogenpohl is a piece that he can build a team around. The Jackson, Missouri native is expected to be a high pick in the June 2026 Major League Baseball draft. The Bears have a history of high draft picks, 21 players have been picked in the top 12 rounds of the draft. Names like Jake Burger, Luke Voit, Shaun Marcum, Bill Mueller, and even Drake Baldwin who's tearing it up with the Atlanta braves this summer. Bogenpohl wants to put his name next to those in the list of Missouri State pros. Bogenpohl (wants to the be the next Missouri State great) As for this summer, Bogenpohl says he's going to heal up from some nagging injuries. He'll try out for Team USA this summer and then later play again in the Cape Cod League. He says that's one of the best summer leagues in the country. Bogenpohl (it's a lot of fun) So great news for Missouri State Bears baseball as it transitions into a new conference. But they'll do it with a familiar face in center field. MSU Athletics Year-in-Review

SPRINGFIELD–The Bears offense lit up the scoreboard during its school record 8-game winning streak, this past season, but does that put it above the rest of the MSU athletic programs?! What's up Bear Nation?! It's hard to believe, but another year of MO-State sports is officially in the books. So, with that, I thought we'd enjoy an 'MSU Review' of the best moments from the 2024-25 sports year. Up first, it's gotta be the Missouri State soccer programs. Both men's and womens' team not only made the NCAA Tournament, but the men's team defeated Drake, 1-0, to claim the Missouri Valley regular season conference crown. Then, the women's team followed suit but upped the anti but winning the MVC Tournament title, too. Then, we got he Lady Bears basketball team. Beth Cunningham finally captured her first MVC regular season title, and, of course, Lacy Stokes cemented her legacy, as one of the all-time Lady Bears greats. But, so did Paige Rocca, especially after hitting this buzzer beater three pointer to force overtime in MO-State's comeback win against Drake. And, last but not least, how about Joey Hawkins and the Bears baseball team. In Hawkins first year as head coach, the Bears won at least a share of the MVC regular season crown for the first time since 2018, had seven players make the All-Conference team, including player of the year, Nick Rodrigueaz, and knocked off No. 2 Arkansas, Fayeteville. But the best of the bunch goes to the Soccer programs. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Bears score 20, stay alive in Valley tourney

NORMAL, Ill–The Missouri State Bears try to avoid a freaky Friday. Missouri State opened play Friday morning in the Valley baseball tournament by losing to Illinois-Chicago 11-5. That loss sent Joey Hawkin's crew into the losers bracket. And MoState squared off with Belmont in a must win game. Missouri State took two of three from Belmont back in late March. And this was a wild game, 1-0 bottom of the second, Nick Rodriguez with a shot to right center, a two run homer, 2-1 Bears. Rodriguez with a 40 game hitting streak. It was 8-7 Belmont in the bottom of the fourth, bases loaded for Carter Bergman takes this deep to left, that one is gone, a grand slam, it's 11-8 Missouri State. It was 15-8 in the fifth, bases loaded again for the bears Dylan Robertson, he singles to right, Jake McCutcheon and Caden Bogenpohl both score it's 17-8. It was 18-6 Bears in the sixth when Bogenpohl takes this deep to straight away center, over the boards and gone, a two run homer. Missouri State stays alive with a 20-10 victory. The Bears will play Saturday at 2 p.m. against the loser of Murray State and Illinois-Chicago. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bears fall short of Sycamores on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD–Playing for the final time on your home field is a bittersweet feeling, for every athlete. However, that's part of life, but it doesn't make it any easier to acknowledge or accept. The great thing about Senior Day, though, is the opportunity for fans, players, and coaches to celebrate all the work the graduating athletes have put in to the program. Sunday, the Missouri State baseball team honored four players for their time and contribution to the team: Shortstop Tyler Epstein, second baseman Nick Rodriguez, infielder Dylan Robertson, and pitcher Jackson Holmes. Each player was escorted by their family and greeted with a hug by Head Coach Joey Hawkins. They also received a printed picture of themselves as a keepsake and momento of their time in maroon and white. Unfortunately, the visiting Indiana State Sycamores did not follow the fairytale scipt and ended up spoiling the celebration, by defeating the Bears, 7-6. Despite 3 rbi from Jake McCutcheon and a 2-run homer by Epstein, MSU wasn't able to beat ISU and missed out on the chance to sweep their weekend series. However, even with Sunday's loss, the Bears still lead the Missouri Valley Conference by a single game against Murray State. Which means, both teams could share the regular season conference title crown, or one of them could claim it outright. Both teams will rest up then play a 3-game series beginning Thursday, May 15. MoState opens last home Valley series with 6-3 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri State Bears opened a weekend Valley series Friday night against Indiana State. And it will be the last time that Missouri State will host a Valley series. The Bears are moving out of the Valley and into Conference USA in July. MoState coach Joey Hawkins wants his team to win the Valley in its last campaign. In our bear nation update, Missouri state can go a long way towards that goal with a series win against the sycamores. Jason schaaf took the hill for the bears and was lights out. Schaaf allowed just two earned runs, striking out seven in six innings of work. At the dish, Taeg Gollert gave his pitcher run support in the form of this solo home run in the second, his fourth long ball of the season made it 1-0 MSU. MoState would scratch out another five more runs, including a Nick Rodriquez home run, and the Bears win 6-3. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
