The Bavarian town of Oberstdorf will be Germany's bidder for the 2031 Nordic skiing world championships, the German Ski Federation (DSV) announced on Monday. Karl-Josef Hildenbrand/dpa The Bavarian town of Oberstdorf will be Germany's bidder for the 2031 Nordic skiing world championships, the German Ski Federation (DSV) announced on Monday. An alternative bid from Oberwiesenthal and Klingenthal in Saxony was also considered, but Oberstdorf has received the nod. Advertisement "After jointly weighing up Germany's chances of success and carefully examining the infrastructural requirements for hosting a World Championships, we have agreed on a German bid with Oberstdorf as the location," Heiko Krause, president of the Saxony Ski Association, said in a statement released by the DSV. "However, it remains our goal to bring the Nordic skiing world championships to Saxony in the foreseeable future." Germany's chances of securing the event, which includes ski jumping, Nordic combined and cross-country skiing, are considered strong. The Austrian towns of Ramsau and Bischofshofen are no longer targeting 2031, while Slovenia's Planica is bidding despite hosting the world championships as recently as 2023. A decision by the governing FIS is expected next year. Oberstdorf has already hosted the event in 1987, 2005 and 2021.

Norway ski jumping federation suspends 2 staff members over illegal suit alterations at worlds

The Norwegian ski federation has suspended a ski jumping coach and an equipment manager over their alleged role in a cheating scandal which shook the world championships last weekend. The federation said coach Magnus Brevik and equipment manager Adrian Livelten were suspected of modifying ski suits by sewing in an extra seam in an attempt to create more lift in the air. Norway is one of the traditional powers within ski jumping, and the cheating attempt at its home world championships in Trondheim has caused a massive outcry in a country that prides itself on its winter sports prowess. Two Norwegian ski jumpers, Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang, were disqualified from Saturday's men's large hill competition after organizers said their suits broke the rules. Lindvik had finished second in the event before he was disqualified. The federation on Sunday admitted that the suits had been deliberately altered, after a video emerged online of the alterations being made. Brevik on Monday told Norwegian media that several team members had been involved in the decision to alter the suits, but that 'I should have stopped it.' He claimed it was the first time they had stitched in an extra seam, but made a sailing analogy to explain why a stiffer suit would help the jumpers fly farther in the air. 'A tighter sail is better than a loose sail,' Brevik said. The federation said Brevik and Livelten would be suspended indefinitely while inquiries continue. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said Sunday that it had opened its own investigation. Hometown hero Klaebo completes golden sweep at Nordic world championships

TRONDHEIM, Norway (AP) — Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo completed a historic sweep of the cross-country skiing world championships on Saturday, and he did it in in his hometown of Trondheim. Cheered on by around 100,000 fans, the Norwegian great claimed a rare victory in the 50-kilometers mass start freestyle for an unprecedented six for six at the Nordic worlds. 'This is way more than I expected and dreamed of, so it's unbelievable,' said Klaebo, who slumped against the advertising hoardings after winning his 15th world title with his head bowed and his elbows on his knees. 'I feel like I've been working so hard to just be here and be in my best shape and managing that and being able to win six out of six … it's just crazy' No man or woman had done the sweep at the world championships since it was extended to six events — in 2001 for the men and 2003 for women. Klaebo completed the course in one hour, 57 minutes and 47.1 seconds, beating William Poromaa of Sweden by 2.1 seconds. Simen Hegstad Krueger was third, 8.5 behind his Norwegian compatriot. The 28-year-old Klaebo, perhaps the greatest cross-country skiers of all time, came into the world championships with no victories in the discipline among his five Olympic gold medals and nine world titles. He was runner-up by one second in 202, and was disqualified in 2021 after crossing the line first. 'I feel like the crowd really helped me out there,' Klaebo. 'I was struggling on lap three. But I managed to stay on the back of the pack and was helped by the thousands of people out there. 'I feel like I've said this every day, but this has been the best day so far. Winning the 50K — I was so close two years ago, disqualified four years ago — it's been a crazy journey.' Klaebo kicked off his historic achievement in Trondheim on Feb. 27, anchoring the Norwegian team to gold in the relay. He won the 20km skiathlon two days later, the 10km on Tuesday and the team sprint on Wednesday. That last victory saw Klaebo become the most decorated male cross-country skier of all time at the worlds, and he added to that tally on Saturday. ___ AP sports: The Associated Press
