Johannesburg residents encouraged to report reckless driving

Since its introduction in 2019, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department's (JMPD) WhatsApp-based hotline has become an essential tool in the fight against reckless driving and other by-law violations across the city. The initiative was launched on March 27, 2019, with the goal of making it easier for residents to report unsafe road behaviour and assist authorities in maintaining order. Read more: Tips for driving through fog The platform allows residents to upload photos or videos of offending vehicles, including their registration numbers and relevant details, along with a brief description of the incident, such as the date, time, and location. Importantly, reports can be made anonymously, with complainants providing their contact details only if they choose to do so, but evidence must be captured personally, by the reporter, to ensure credibility and legal validity. Complainants should also be prepared to testify, if required, during legal proceedings. The initiative aims to curb dangerous driving behaviours that continue to threaten road safety in Johannesburg, with reckless driving and driving under the influence remaining top transgressions. The dedicated WhatsApp number for reporting is: 081 410 6338. While the hotline remains a vital channel, residents can still report voice complaints directly to JMPD via phone at: (011) 375 5911. Six years on, the WhatsApp hotline remains a crucial component in Johannesburg's efforts to promote safer roads, encouraging community participation in law enforcement and helping to reduce accidents caused by negligent driving. The city continues to rely on the co-operation of its residents to uphold road safety and enforce municipal regulations effectively. Joburg's budget aims to combat rampant crime and improve safety

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has been allocated more resources to tackle crime across the city. The Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD), once a vibrant epicentre of finance and commerce, is now grappling with an alarming rise in crime that casts a long shadow over its efforts for revitalisation. But there is a glimmer of hope, with the city yesterday announcing new plans to tackle the scourge. As the police force employs various strategies to enhance security, the persistent issues of theft, robbery, and hijackings have put both residents and businesses on edge. The CBD's reputation for being a high-crime area is not unfounded, as reports indicate a worrying trend in criminal activity. Victims recount harrowing experiences, from being held at gunpoint during daylight hours to having their vehicles forcibly taken in broad daylight. The subject of the high crime rate in the province featured prominently in the White House last week when the South African delegation was hosted by the US government. Last year, Gauteng Premier was quoted as saying the crime in the province is giving him ''sleepless nights'. However, this could change if the City of Johannesburg has its way. Yesterday, the City of Joburg's pledge to protect residents from rampant crime across the municipality should come as a relief; moreover, as the city prepares to host world leaders later this year. Johannesburg will be hosting the G20 Summit, a meeting of heads of state and government held from 22 to 23 November 2025 Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds has announced increased resources for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). Arnolds tabled the R89.4 billion budget for the 2025/26 financial year at the council chambers in Braamfontein yesterday.

Image: X The City of Joburg has pledged to protect residents from rampant crime across the municipality, with Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds announcing increased resources for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). Arnolds tabled the R89.4 billion budget for the 2025/26 financial year at the council chambers in Braamfontein on Wednesday. She stated that the city's degradation through illegal dumping, informal invasions, vandalism, cable theft, and by-law non-compliance erodes dignity, drives away investment, and costs the municipality millions of rand. 'It is not enough to deliver services. We must also protect them,' she said. The JMPD's operations will receive a major boost for optimal deployment of officers in high-risk zones, taking advantage of strategic appointments made with the 2024/25 budget allocation. 'Smart surveillance systems linked to precinct revitalisation initiatives, supported by a R16 million investment in the Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre in Public Safety,' Arnolds said. There will also be support for the municipality's bad building strategy, where hijacked and unsafe properties are secured, repurposed, or demolished. 'The inner city war room, announced in the State of the City Address, is now operational. It brings together development planning, JMPD, housing, and public safety into a single command unit focused on precinct-by-precinct transformation,' she explained.

Manhunt launched after Joburg metro police officer killed in Vlakfontein shooting

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer Matome Mokoena (33) from Region G Operations was fatally shot while pursuing a robbery suspect. Rising Sun reports the incident occurred yesterday evening. According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, Mokoena and his colleague were responding to a reported robbery in Vlakfontein during their patrol and had received a description of the suspects' vehicle: A white Volkswagen Polo. The officers located the vehicle and initiated a stop. While the driver initially failed to comply, they managed to bring the vehicle to a halt. As Mokoena approached the driver's side of the suspects' vehicle, which contained five occupants, he was shot from within. Both officers immediately took cover. Tragically, the suspects pursued Mokoena to a nearby residence, where he was fatally shot. The suspects then stole the officer's official JMPD firearm and the marked JMPD patrol vehicle, which was idling at the scene. The stolen patrol vehicle was subsequently disabled by JMPD Fleet Services and later found abandoned in Lehae. Superintendent Fihla told the Lenasia Rising Sun that they also received information regarding the fatal shooting of a member of the public in the same area. JMPD chief of police Commissioner Patrick Jaca commented: 'This is a dark day for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the entire city. The brutal murder of Officer Mokoena is an attack on all law-abiding citizens. We will not rest until those responsible for this cowardly act are found and face the full might of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Mokoena's family, and we will ensure that his sacrifice is not in vain.' A full-scale investigation has been launched in conjunction with the SAPS to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Joburg metro police officer killed on duty in Vlakfontein

A Johannesburg metro police officer, Matome Mokoena, was fatally shot while on duty on Wednesday night. The same gunmen are believed to have killed another person on the same night in the area. Mokoena and his colleague were responding to a reported robbery in Vlakfontein and received a description of a suspect vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo. After locating the vehicle they stopped it and Mokoena approached the driver's side, where he was met with gunfire from inside the car. The officers were wearing bulletproof vests and took cover, and the vehicle sped away, metro police spokesperson Supt Xolani Fihla said. However, the suspects followed Mokoena to a nearby residence and shot him dead. They then stole his firearm and the marked patrol vehicle. The suspects later abandoned the patrol vehicle in Lehea after the fleet services disabled it. 'We also received information regarding the fatal shooting of a member of the public in the same vicinity,' Fihla said. 'Preliminary observations suggest this incident may be linked to the same individuals involved in the attack on our officer. 'This is a dark day for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the city,' said JMPD commissioner Patrick Jaca. 'The brutal murder of Mokoena is an attack on all law-abiding citizens. 'We will not rest until those responsible for this cowardly act are found and face the full might of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mokoena's family and we will ensure his sacrifice is not in vain.' Investigations are under way.
