Joburg metro police officer killed on duty in Vlakfontein
A Johannesburg metro police officer, Matome Mokoena, was fatally shot while on duty on Wednesday night.
The same gunmen are believed to have killed another person on the same night in the area.
Mokoena and his colleague were responding to a reported robbery in Vlakfontein and received a description of a suspect vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo.
After locating the vehicle they stopped it and Mokoena approached the driver's side, where he was met with gunfire from inside the car.
The officers were wearing bulletproof vests and took cover, and the vehicle sped away, metro police spokesperson Supt Xolani Fihla said.
However, the suspects followed Mokoena to a nearby residence and shot him dead. They then stole his firearm and the marked patrol vehicle.
The suspects later abandoned the patrol vehicle in Lehea after the fleet services disabled it.
'We also received information regarding the fatal shooting of a member of the public in the same vicinity,' Fihla said.
'Preliminary observations suggest this incident may be linked to the same individuals involved in the attack on our officer.
'This is a dark day for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the city,' said JMPD commissioner Patrick Jaca. 'The brutal murder of Mokoena is an attack on all law-abiding citizens.
'We will not rest until those responsible for this cowardly act are found and face the full might of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mokoena's family and we will ensure his sacrifice is not in vain.'

River Park without electricity after clash with City Power technicians
City Power cut off the electricity supply to River Park in Alexandra, plunging the entire community into darkness. This comes after community members resisted City Power's scheduled meter audit and disconnection operation in the area on May 28. Read more: River Park residents resist City Powers cut-off operation The utility's spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that their cut-off operation, which was held in collaboration with the police, JMPD and contracted security personnel, targeted 470 households with zero recorded electricity purchases, and 367 customers with low vending patterns, 'indicative of meter tampering.' However, their scheduled operation was met with resistance when angry residents staged a protest, threatening and nearly holding their team hostage. Mangena noted that as tensions escalated, they had to swiftly withdraw the operation and resorted to disconnecting the whole area. 'We have repeatedly cautioned River Park residents that continued defiance, interference, and resistance to lawful operations would result in a total supply disconnection,' he said. 'However, those warnings have been met with contempt. Today's actions have forced us to act decisively.' Mangena said it was not the first time River Park residents had acted 'unlawfully and aggressively.' He added it occurred on May 28, when residents staged a protest at the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre after the utility disconnected nine properties found to have connected illegally to the grid. He said that earlier this year, individuals masquerading as community representatives had violently disrupted their smart meter rollout operation. They also stressed that City Power was in breach of the agreement they had on May 28, that the utility would not cut off their electricity at least until June 9, when City Power technicians come to normalise the meters in the area. City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava said that the utility had a contractual relationship with verified individual account holders, not a group of people who they couldn't ascertain if they were customers or not. 'We urge those registered customers who have been affected by the power supply cut-off to visit our SDC on an individual basis so that we can resolve their queries separately. All others will remain disconnected until they allow us to audit and normalise meters in the area,' she noted. ‘She was with boyfriend': Teen girl charged with perjury after false rape claim while hitchhiking

Image: File Police in Mpumalanga have charged a 16-year-old girl with perjury, after she reported a case of rape. In the teenager's case, she alleged that she was raped while hitchhiking earlier this week. Police launched a manhunt for two men who were apparently travelling in a black Volkswagen Polo. In an update on Friday, provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said investigations have revealed that the young woman was fabricating the entire story. 'The family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit immediately launched an investigation into the case, which had attracted significant public attention,' said Ndubane. 'However, during the course of their investigation, it was established that no rape had occurred. The girl eventually confessed that she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, had chosen to lie about being raped.' In her original report to the police, the teenager alleged that she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom to Lydenburg when a black Volkswagen Polo 'with two male occupants speaking English' offered her a lift. Meanwhile, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed deep disappointment over the false report. Mkhwanazi issued a stern warning to community members on the repercussions of making false statements to the police. 'We will not show mercy to individuals who open false cases. The crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024/2025 indicate an increase in sexual offences. It is therefore extremely concerning and disheartening when people abuse the system by reporting fake cases,' he said.
