(WIVT/WBGH) – Hundreds of family members, friends, fellow first responders, and officers have gathered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Binghamton to remember the life of fallen firefighter John 'JR' Gaudet on Wednesday. Gaudet passed away at the age of 40 battling the third-alarm fire at 1 and 3 Court Street in Binghamton in the late hours of Wednesday, Feb. 12. He is survived by his three children Charles (9), Vanessa (5), and Michael (3) and his wife Felly. Gaudet grew up in Binghamton, graduating from Binghamton High School in 2002. He went on to play lacrosse for Binghamton University from 2003-2004 and later transferred to play at SUNY Cortland in 2007-2008. In the days following Gaudet's death, a GoFundMe was set up in his name to help the family with costs. As of the morning of Feb. 19, the GoFundMe has raised over $277,000 of the now $320,000 goal. You can donate to the fundraiser here. It hasn't just been family and friends donating to the cause. Barstool Sports' Kevin 'KFC' Clancy set up a T-shirt fundraiser that collected over $30,000 to give to the family. The Syracuse Fire Department Credit Union created an account for donations as well. Binghamton Fire holding raffle to benefit Gaudet family
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Binghamton Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of their own by raising money to support the family he tragically left behind. 40-year-old John 'JR' Gaudet died while fighting a second-alarm fire at 1 Main Street late Wednesday night. While battling the flames, a Mayday call was sent out for three firefighters trapped inside, one of whom was Gaudet. Two of the firefighters were taken to Wilson Hospital after being pulled from the building and are currently in stable condition. Gaudet, who was also taken to Wilson Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival. According to a press release, Gaudet died after a wall collapsed on him while fighting the fire. First responders react to passing of Binghamton firefighter On Friday, the Binghamton Fire Department announced that The Yard Foundation is having a raffle to benefit Gaudet and his family. Participants will have the chance to win a Cairns N5A BLACK leather fire helmet in a size large. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to the Gaudet family to support JR's wife and three children. Raffle tickets are $33 and can be purchased from now until February 15. There are unlimited spots available. The winner will be announced on Facebook live. GoFundMe for Binghamton firefighter who died in the line of duty
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family of a Binghamton firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty. 40-year-old John 'JR' Gaudet died while fighting a second-alarm fire at 1 Main Street late Wednesday night. While battling the flames, a Mayday call was sent out for three firefighters trapped inside, one of whom was Gaudet. Two of the firefighters were taken to Wilson Hospital after being pulled from the building and are currently in stable condition. Gaudet, who was also taken to Wilson Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival. According to a press release, Gaudet died after a wall collapsed on him while fighting the fire. According to the organizer of the GoFundMe, Gaudet dedicated his life to his wife and three children. The campaign was set up to ease the burden of his death off of his wife and family. First responders react to passing of Binghamton firefighter
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Local officials and community organizations are mourning the loss of a Binghamton firefighter. 40-year-old John 'JR' Gaudet died while fighting a second-alarm fire at 1 Main Street late Wednesday night. While battling the flames, a Mayday call was sent out for three firefighters trapped inside, one of whom was Gaudet. Two of the firefighters were taken to Wilson Hospital after being pulled from the building and are currently in stable condition. Gaudet, who was also taken to Wilson Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival. According to a press release, Gaudet died after a wall collapsed on him while fighting the fire. Several first responder agencies took to Facebook on Thursday to react to the loss of Gaudet including the Endicott Fire Department, Endicott Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, Binghamton Police Department, and New York State Police. 'The ability to come up with the right words is impossible. All the love goes to our Brothers and Sisters in the City of Binghamton Fire Department,' said Endicott Fire. 'Our members are your members. Our family is your family. We are here for you. The world is a little less safe today because you are no longer with us. Rest easy brother.' Fallen Binghamton firefighter part of local lacrosse community 'We mourn the loss of a brave firefighter who selflessly gave his life in the line of duty, protecting the community he served with dedication and courage. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic loss,' said Binghamton Police. Senator Chuck Schumer also released a statement regarding the tragic incident.
