Ornstein named Sportswriter of the Year as The Athletic lauded at British Sports Journalism Awards
David Ornstein was crowned Sportswriter of the Year as The Athletic was named Sports Content Organisation — for the outlet which best covered sport in 2024 — at the British Sports Journalism Awards in London on Monday night.
It is the second year in a row The Athletic has scooped the prestigious John Bromley Trophy, following Adam Crafton's success in March 2024, and capped a memorable night for Ornstein, who also retained his Football News Reporter title.

The evening was capped by The Athletic winning one of the biggest awards of the night, Sports Content Organisation, as the judges praised the focus on news-gathering and impactful journalism across our written, audio, video and social platforms.
In praising Ornstein's impact across the last year, event organisers the Sports Journalism Association (SJA) referenced his role in breaking news of sporting director Dan Ashworth's shock departure from Manchester United and investigative work regarding the handling of allegations by former Fulham women's players.
The SJA said on its website: 'His unflinching pursuit of stories has elevated him into the upper echelons of sports journalism and there was also appreciation for his contributions to two shortlisted Scoops, which underlined his sharp delivery and also showed great sensitivity.'
Elsewhere, there were silver awards for Caoimhe O'Neill (popular culture commentator), Mark Carey (data journalist), Matt Slater (sports summariser), Charlotte Harpur and Katie Whyatt (women's sport) and The Story of the Guinea Stadium Disaster podcast (audio documentary), presented by Adam Leventhal with Abi Paterson as executive producer.
Jon Mackenzie (content creator) and The Athletic's Week in Football (YouTube show) were awarded bronze awards. The Athletic also came third in the Digital Sports Publisher category, and for our breaking news coverage of the Copa America final chaos.
