Pubs, supermarkets and bookies expecting huge boost when Lionesses play Euro final
Millions are expected to tune in to the must-watch clash between England and Spain, whether it be from home, pubs, beer gardens or in front of big screens Pubs, bookies and supermarkets are gearing up for a bumper weekend as the nation gets ready to roar on the Lionesses in the Euros final. Punters will be drinking until the wee hours after pubs received special permission to stay open as late as 1am to celebrate the occasion. And those planning to watch it at home have already begun stocking up - as supermarket giants expect a huge boost in sales. Asda has forecasted 1.3 million sales of bags of crisps and 300,000 pizzas. Meanwhile Tesco expects to sell three million cans of beer and cider, over 3.5 million bottles of wine, 450,000 bottles of champagne or sparkling wine, and 70,000 pizzas across the weekend. But despite the opposition, the supermarket believes that Spanish brews such as San Miguel, Cruzcampo, and Estrella are likely to be the beer of choice. Spanish lager is now by far the most popular beer bought in the UK, with volume growth at Tesco last year up by more than 15% versus the year before. And the bookies are also predicting a surge, as the Barmy Army back their beloved Lionesses to go all the way. Betting shop Coral expects this Sunday's Women's European Championship final to be to see a record-breaking number of fans having a flutter. Coral's John Hill said: 'Millions of pounds will be bet on the women's Euros final with British bookmakers, and the majority will be on the Lionesses to lift the trophy. For the first time in this tournament, England will start a match as the underdogs, but that tag might just suit them." William Hill added that 66% of bets taken in the Women's Euros have backed England. And after the government gave pubs a special dispensation to stay open late, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper wished the Lionesses good luck ahead of the final. She said: 'The Lionesses have shown throughout this summer why they are true national stars. They have shown unbelievable grit and determination and are an inspiration to us all. 'Watching football in the local pub is a great British tradition and by extending licensing hours, we will hopefully be able to celebrate late into the evening. I want to wish the best of luck to Sarina Wiegman and the England squad, who we hope will be able to bring it home once again and continue on as champions of Europe.'

This weekend the Harvards fly again in spectacular homecoming
Social Sharing As Canada's efforts in the Allied forces mounted during the Second World War, more and more young pilots took to the skies in Harvard training planes. This weekend the Harvards, with their iconic yellow paint, will be flying above Thunder Bay. At the airport, the Northwestern Ontario Aviation Heritage Centre (NOAHC) is hosting a special event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The event takes place both Saturday and Sunday. "I'm a lover of history," Denise Lyzun of NOAHC said. "I'm always amazed how many people are just so enthused about aircraft." The single engine aircraft was a breeding ground for effective aviation, its dual controls allowing a pilot in training to operate the plane alongside the watchful eye of a trainer. But, Harvards are not the only aircraft that NOAHC will have on display. Their event also includes a Harvard 2 courtesy of the RCAF — a modern version of a Harvard currently used for advanced training. Coming in from Tillsonburg, there will also be the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association's FIN number 242. John Hill, also from NOAHC, will be taking a ride on that aircraft with his daughter and hopes to continue a unique family connection. "My father flew that particular aircraft when he was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force," he said. "So we will have a third generation of Hills flying in that one airplane." Thunder Bay made Although Harvards were used for training in the Second World War, the aircraft on display this weekend were built in the 1950s to support the Korean War. One of the main production hubs for these Harvards was Thunder Bay. The Canadian Car and Foundry ("Can Car"), located on Montreal Street, was Canada's largest aircraft manufacturer during the Second World War. It would go on to maintain a production line for aircraft long after the war. This 101-year-old veteran flew in a Harvard II training plane 8 months ago A very special flight happened Wednesday at Tillsonburg Regional Airport. Ken Raven, who turned 101 years old earlier this November, got to ride in a Harvard II trainer, an aircraft he hasn't flown in since he was a young man. "There are still many people who have family members who worked at Can Car during World War II and after World War II on aircraft," Lyzun says. After the war, Can Car would keep producing Harvards for pilot training across North America. "North American Aviation Corporation did not have the production line," Hill says. "So they contracted out mainly to Thunder Bay, to Canadian Car and Foundry, and here we ended up building an additional 555 of these airplanes for the Royal Canadian Air Force and the United States Air Force." Party like it's 1959 As well as watching the aircraft in action, NOAHC's event at the weekend will also lean into history. There will be '50s music, and attendees are encouraged to dress in line with the time period. "We're trying to maintain that '50s vibe... but also it's so educational too, to learn about our history this way," Lyzun says. For Lyzun, the event also has a personal connection. "My late husband wrote a book called Aviation in Thunder Bay and it has been well received in the community," she said.

Man's outrage as multi-storey car park's lights left on despite closure
A man said it is 'outrageous' that lights at a seafront car park are left on despite its closure. Grafton car park on Worthing seafront was closed on May 16 after Worthing Borough Council reported 'falling concrete'. It said that it would be carrying out an 'urgent investigation' into the condition of the structure, which is more than 60 years old. John Hill, from Sompting, regularly drives past the car park and noticed the lights were still left switched on. The 74-year-old has raised concerns that it is wasting council money and says they should be switched off. Mr Hill said: 'It's like Blackpool illuminations. 'Every single light is burning. 'With all the cut backs the council is having to make at the minute, it's an absolute disgrace. 'They're on during the day and at night. 'It's outrageous. It must be costing thousands of pounds.' The council recently reassured the public that the connected shops and bowling alley are safe to stay open due to the structure of the building being unaffected. Worthing Borough Council has been approached for comment.

Exact date mercury to tip 30C for first time this year as maps turn scarlet red
Weather maps show that London could experience scorching temperatures with the mercury reaching 30C in mid-June with warm conditions expected across most of the country Brits are set to enjoy a warm weekend with plenty of dry and sunny weather - but even warmer temperatures are expected in mid-June. According to the latest maps from WXCharts, on June 12 the mercury could reach 30C for the first time this year, with London set to experience the warmest conditions. Other parts of the South East will also be warm, forecasters have said, with temperatures hitting 25C to 28C. East Anglia will also register temperatures of 28C while the Midlands will see a high of 27C, WXCharts says. Parts of the north will also be warm, with 26C expected in Newcastle. Scotland, however, is set to be cooler with temperatures ranging between 20C and 23C, despite a prediction of 25C in the north, near Forres. The weather maps reveal that the mainland will see a low of 16C while the isles in north-western Scotland will experience 14C, reports the Express. From this weekend the nation's fortunes will begin to change with 20C highs remaining stable next week. By Saturday, June 7, this will increase by a degree in the south-east, and it will be the second week of June when the mercury ramps up considerably. By Tuesday, June 10 much of London, Kent and Essex will see the bulk of the heat arriving - with 25C to 26C bringing strong UV rays for many. This will be more like 24C in the north with cities such as Leeds and Newcastle seeing such temperatures. Today, leading bookmaker Coral cut their odds to 4-5 (from 5-2) on next month being the hottest June on record in the UK. "With the outlook looking positive for next month, we have slashed the odds on a record-hot June," said Coral's John Hill. The Met Office says "a few hot days" are likely in June as the long-range weather forecast from June 4 to June 13 reads: "A changeable spell of weather is expected at the beginning of this period as areas of low pressure move in from the Atlantic across the UK. These will bring showers or longer spells of rain to most areas, heavy at times and perhaps accompanied by strong winds along some coasts, though drier interludes are likely too. "Over the weekend and towards the middle of June, high pressure will probably begin to become more dominant in the south, at least for brief periods, whereas the north is more likely to remain more unsettled with further episodes of rain or showers and strong winds. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly below normal at first, perhaps rising above average later, with a chance of a few hot days." The second half of the month will likely be characterised by "changeable weather" across the UK "with a mixture of Atlantic weather systems moving in from the west interspersed with dry and sunny periods." The long-range forecast from June 14 to June 28 says "temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above normal, perhaps with some hot spells at times especially across the south." UK 5 day weather forecast This Evening and Tonight: Showers in the north easing this evening with some sunny spells. Dry for most overnight with clear spells. Turning cloudier from the west later with some rain in the northwest by dawn. Mild overnight and humid in the south. Saturday: Showery rain, heavy at times, moves east across northern areas, turning drier later. Elsewhere, mainly dry with sunny spells developing. Rather breezy. Very warm in the east and southeast. Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: Feeling cooler from Sunday with some sunny spells and showers, but breezy. Largely dry on Monday with light winds but turning more unsettled on Tuesday with heavy spells of rain.
