Rose Lavelle's return not enough as Gotham FC falls to Kansas City Current

Rose is back From her ankle boo-boo The rain fell down Advertisement And Gotham did, too. The return of star midfielder Rose Lavelle, meant to spark Gotham during a patchy run of league form, instead provided just a silver lining on a gray and rainy Saturday afternoon during a 2-1 home loss to the Kansas City Current. 5 Gotham FC midfielder Rose Lavelle (16) tries to get past Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton (14) during the second half at Sports Illustrated Stadium on June 7, 2025. John Jones-Imagn Images It was the first appearance for Lavelle — the fan favorite who had been sidelined from Gotham (3W-3D-5L) and the U.S. women's national team following offseason ankle surgery — since Nov. 16. 'All the hard work she's put in with the medical team, the high-performance team, the coaches, has been amazing, but especially her,' Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said this week. 'We can see her finally with her teammates, where she belongs, doing what she loves — which is playing for her team, for Gotham in front of our fans.' The cheers for Lavelle started in the 31st minute when she rose from the substitutes' bench to begin warming up beyond the goal line. John Jones-Imagn Images At halftime, she shared a hug with Liberty counterpart Breanna Stewart, who joined the crowd at what's now known as Sports Illustrated Stadium for the team's annual Pride match. Lavelle entered in the 74th minute to a sustained round of applause, and wasted little time getting on the ball and showcasing her trademark saucy dribbling. Minutes later, she sent a left-footed shot just wide of the top corner. She also applied the pressure that led to a Current own goal deep into stoppage time. Advertisement The day of mixed emotions ended with the ceremonial presentation of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, the regional club title Gotham won last month, further underscoring where the team is caught at the moment. 5 NJ/NY Gotham FC forward Margaret Purce (23) is given assistance from the pitch after an injury during the second half against the Kansas City Current at Sports Illustrated Stadium. John Jones-Imagn Images There's another trophy to be proud of and show off, affirming the club's ambitions to be relevant on an international level. At the same time, there's the reality of the standings: Last year's NWSL semifinalists finished the afternoon in ninth place, outside of playoff position, and faced the prospect of sinking as low as 12th (out of 14) by the end of the weekend. They are winless in their past four NWSL matches (0-1-3), a stretch dating back six weeks to an April 26 victory over the Washington Spirit. They have scored just 13 goals in 11 games, despite a wealth of attacking options, and have a goal differential of plus-1. Kansas City (9-0-2) is the best team in the league and quickly showed why. Gotham conceded in the third minute off a giveaway by Emily Sonnett, allowing Temwa Chawinga to spring Michelle Cooper for a quick strike. The visitors doubled their lead in the 11th minute on a blink-of-an-eye move up the right side, this time Chawinga converting off a cross from Cooper. Advertisement 5 NJ/NY Gotham FC forward Geyse (10) moves the ball past Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton (14) during the second half at Sports Illustrated Stadium. John Jones-Imagn Images Gotham twice appeared to have pulled one back in the second half, only for both goals to be disallowed. In the 49th minute, Sonnett headed in Sarah Schupansky's corner kick, but Sonnett was whistled for a foul on the set piece. In the 63rd minute, Esther González was judged to be offside after collecting a loose ball in the box and slotting home what would have been her league-leading eighth goal of the season.

NY Knicks vs Boston Celtics in Eastern Conference semifinals: 3 things to know

For a while now, the Knicks meeting the Boston Celtics in the playoffs seemed inevitable. Now it's a reality. The third-seeded Knicks beat the No. 6 Detroit Pistons, 116-113, Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to advance to play the second-seeded Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Advertisement The series will begin on Monday at TD Garden in Boston. The Celtics beat the No. 7 Magic in five games in their series to advance. Here are three things to know about the series: 1. Tough opening night in Boston for Knicks There was plenty of hype for the teams' season opening meeting in Boston – especially from Knicks fans excited to see the new-look lineup with Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Then it all came crashing down. Hard. The Celtics shot an NBA-record tying 29 three-pointers in the eventual 132-109 win at TD Garden. Jayson Tatum had 37 points for the Celtics. That game turned out to be a sign of things to come. Advertisement All four were Celtics victories (it should be noted that one of those came when OG Anunoby, a defensive stopper, was unavailable for the Knicks). Still, it wasn't a great sign of what could be to come in the playoffs – although it's a whole new season now. Knicks to face former Knick Kristaps Porzingis The Knicks will go up against Celtics forward Kristaps Porzingis, whom they traded away back in 2019 and has since become a target of the fans because of his complicated departure. He'll hear plenty of boos from the MSG crowd. Regardless, he's had a solid season when he's been healthy. Porzingis was limited to 42 games during the regular season due to injury. He averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three-point range on 6.0 attempts per game. Vancouver Canucks Eliminated From Post-Season Contention, Will Not Qualify For The 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Mar 24, 2025; Newark, New Jersey, USA; Vancouver Canucks players celebrate after defeating the New Jersey Devils in overtime shootouts at Prudential Center. Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images The Vancouver Canucks have offically been eliminated from playoff contention. Vancouver will not qualify for the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the Minnesota Wild defeated the San Jose Sharks 8-7 in overtime on Wednesday. While the Canucks can still collect 93 points, both the Wild and the St. Louis Blues have more regulation wins, which means they have the tie-breaker over Vancouver. Vancouver has only qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs twice in the previous ten seasons, with the other occasion being back in 2020. In 78 games this season, the Canucks are 36-29-13, and have collected 85 points. Advertisement With four games left in the season, the focus shifts to 2025-26 as players compete for spots on the roster. Vancouver currently has multiple players called up from the AHL who are competing for spots next season, including Aatu Räty, Victor Mancini, and Linus Karlsson. All three are also eligable for the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs and are set to play big roles for the Abbotsford Canucks once returned to the AHL. There will also be a large focus among the fan base on where the Canucks will finish in this year's draft lottery. Vancouver is projected to finish with the 15th overall pick and is currently ineligible to move up to first overall. Based on point totals around the league, the Canucks will most likely won't move up or down, and head into the 2025 NHL Entry Draft with a top-15 pick. Vancouver wraps up their mini two-game road trip with a game on Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche. The Canucks have had the Avalanche's number this season, going 2-0 against them so far this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 pm PT from Ball Arena. Padres make shrewd move for efficient bat to bolster lineup

John Jones-Imagn Images John Jones-Imagn Images The San Diego Padres pulled off one of the more underrated signings of the offseason on Wednesday. Padres add former Mets star Jose Iglesias According to FanSided's Robert Murray, the Padres have acquired free agent star slugger Jose Iglesias (h/t SNY). Iglesias and his former team, the New York Mets, were unable to come to terms on another deal this winter. The Mets cited cap space and prioritizing youth development as reasons why they refrained from bringing him back. Credit: Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports Iglesias will bring strong batting average to Padres San Diego will benefit from having the 35-year-old on their team next season. Iglesias batted .337 in 2024. He owns a praiseworthy .283 career batting average. Advertisement The Padres already have a wealth of power hitters and efficient sluggers. The righty talent will give them another sure bet to get on base at a high rate, which could service them early or in the middle of their batting order. Iglesias could be reliable out of their fifth slot or the seventh spot. Not only so, but he was stout in the infield last season as well. The longtime utility man sported a .990 fielding percentage at third base, a .980 percentage at second base, and produced 154 assists to only three errors in 2024 out of those slots. San Diego pulled off a major under-the-radar signing that will likely prove beneficial in their World Series pursuits. More must-reads:
