Director John Landis ordered the helicopter to "get lower" before setting off pyrotechnic explosions in a scene set during the Vietnam War.
The explosion disrupted the rotor of the helicopter and it crashed into the three as they tried to run away.
The children were working in violation of California labour laws, and their parents had been told they would not be in any danger.
