The Death Row Records Gospel Album —Yes, You Read That Right — Is Here

Death Row Records is in the gospel business. Today, the legendary label released Altar Call, a 21-track project featuring celebrated singers such as Jamie Foxx, John P. Kee, and others. The project is dedicated to Snoop's mother Beverly Tate, who died in 2021 at the age of 70. Altar Call arrives on what would have been her 74th birthday. 'The spirit of my mother will forever live within me,' Snoop told Okayplayer about the project. 'This album is a reflection of what she has taught me — to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the Bible of Love.' Snoop Dogg executive produced the project and sought to blend gospel with R&B, hip-hop, and other genres. 'It's always been on my heart,' he told Dr. Dre's Beats 1 radio show at the time of gospel music. 'I just never got around to it because I always be doing gangsta business or doing this or doing that, I just felt like it's been on my heart too long. I need to do it now.' He also said, 'I am blessed to have so many legendary friends join me on this journey. As the country is in one of its heaviest times and is so divided, I wanted to make an album that spreads love and unity around the world. That's what I was taught, so that's all I know. Real love.' He once again enlisted his wide network to contribute to Altar Call, which includes Jamie Foxx covering Bill Withers' 'Grandma's Hands,' as well as Death Row artists Charlie Breal and JANE HANDCOCK singing 'Grace and Mercy', and 'Just Believe,' respectively.
