Emmerdale star Ryan Hawley breaks his silence on THAT unexpected return as show bosses reveal the extreme measures they took to keep his storyline under wraps

Emmerdale 's Ryan Hawley has broken his silence on his return to the ITV soap as the show bosses reveal the extreme lengths they took on keeping his storyline under wraps. The actor, 39, took on the role of Robert Sugden in The Dales back in 2014. Ryan left Emmerdale back in 2019 after his alter-ego was involved in the murder of Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie). Robert was sent to prison for accidentally killing Wendy Posner's son Lee after raping his sister Victoria Barton (Isabel Hodgins). On Wednesday fans went wild as Robert gatecrashed his ex Aaron Dingle's wedding to his long-lost brother John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). Speaking to The Mirror about his epic return, he said: 'The secret is out today! From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'My character is returning permanently and not just for Aaron and John's wedding. I am back for good, and I am so excited to be playing Robert again.' The star has been living in Brazil with his family over the past year and never thought it was the 'right time' to reprise his role. But something had changed to make him return. And the show pulled out all the stops to make sure that the return was a surprise and kept under wraps for as long as possible. He explained: 'My scripts have had Marco on them, rather than Robert, and so much effort has been put into it. 'I have been coming in via a secret entrance, so nobody could see me arrive, and it has been very hush, hush. 'I have also got driven in by one of our very trusted esteemed transport seniors to make sure it stayed a secret, and so much hard work has been put into it logistically.' Robert was sent to prison for accidentally killing Wendy Posner's son Lee (Kris Mochrie) after raping his sister Victoria Barton (Isabel Hodgins, pictured) Speaking on Thursday's episode of ITV's Lorraine, Ryan confirmed that he isn't going anywhere. He told the host: ''It's indefinite. 'Robert is back. He's coming back to try and win Aaron back. 'He's trying to stop John.' Ryan has had a very popular acting career since shooting to fame in the 2000s. He landed a role in Life Is Wild in 2007, followed by another in Doctors the following year. He also played Will in Survivors the same year. Before starring in Emmerdale, he played Andy Thatcher in Devil's Pass, John Van Ert in Father Brown and Jack Thayer in Titanic. After leaving The Dales he starred in two episodes of Silent Witness as Michael Robson. He also took on the role of Sid Crabtree in All Creatures Great and Small. Last year he starred in five episodes of Casualty as Jamie Cleveland. Ryan is also a stage performer, having been in The History Boys, Letting in Air and You May Go Now. On Wednesday night, viewers were over the moon with Robert's epic return. Taking to social media, one said: 'Robron back in the year 2025 after six years I've never been f*****g happier; 'I'm sorry, but to be gone six years and turn up looking this GORGEOUS?! HIS POWER!!!' 'Robert: Miss me. Everyone: YES;' 'ROBRON IS BACK IN THE YEAR 2025 ROBRON STANS HOW WE FEELING.' Speaking about the reaction on Lorraine on Thursday morning, Ryan said to the Scottish host: 'Some of the reactions, I was like "wow". 'I was on a train, coming here to see you! I've seen some on social media, great response - and some people here! 'It's such a good year going forward. Towards end of year... I'm so excited where the show is going. It's a great time to be involved in it.' Emmerdale airs on ITV.

Emmerdale's Ryan Hawley breaks silence on Robert Sugden's shock return

EMMERDALE star Ryan Hawley has broken his silence on Robert Sugden's shock return. The actor has returned to the ITV soap after bowing out from the role in 2019. 4 4 4 Viewers watched on as Robert made a surprise appearance at ex-husband Aaron's wedding to John Sugden - Robert's half-brother. After the dramatic comeback aired, Ryan has addressed his future on Emmerdale. He told press: "Robert's back after six years! And a lot has happened during this time in the village and for Robert. "Two very different worlds, the village and Robert's reality in prison "And out of the blue, just in the nick of time, Robert turns up at Aaron's wedding to John." Ryan added: "It sets up a fantastic few episodes to finish off the wedding week which shows how the incident of Robert turning up will resolve itself." Continuing, the star addressed how soap bosses worked to keep his return under wraps. The actor explained he'd been given the codename "Marco", used a secret entrance to enter the building and a driver brought him from home to set. Ryan elaborated further: "There's so much effort that's gone into it. I didn't tell anyone. I didn't tell my family or friends. "Just fairly recently, I said, 'it's Ryan, I play Robert' and the security guard said 'what's your code name.' I said, 'Marco.' And then he let me in!" Emmerdale fans work out explosive twist as John Sugden arrives in the village - and they aren't happy The Sun exclusively revealed how actor Ryan Hawley had returned to the soap for a brief stint. A source speaking at the time said: 'Ryan has a lot of respect for the show and its fans and he really wanted to give them a treat so he agreed to come back for a brief stint. 'It's going to be a huge surprise for fans especially the Robron fans who have missed Robert desperately since Ryan quit. 'Nothing was seen as being too extreme to keep the secret with fake names on scripts, smuggling him in and out of the studios and keeping everything very tight.' The star - who played scheming Robert between 2014 and 2019 in the ITV soap - agreed to return as a one-off treat for fans as ex-husband Aaron Dingle prepares to marry Robert ' s killer brother John Sugden. Aaron Dingle's biggest storylines The character Aaron Dingle (formerly Livesy) made his Emmerdale debut all the way back in 2003. Current actor Danny Miller took on the role in 2008. Here are some of Aaron's biggest soap storylines over the years. McFarlane family: After Aaron returns to the village in 2008, he is arrested by Ross Kirk (Samuel Anderson) for possession of drugs. His mother Chas ' (Lucy Pargeter) family later learn he is a drug courier for the McFarlanes. Coming to terms with his homosexuality: Initially, Aaron questioned and struggled to come to terms with his homosexuality. He ultimately confided in friend and guardian Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt). Romantic advance towards Adam Barton: At one point, Aaron begins dating Holly Barton (Sophie Powles) and befriends her brother Adam (Adam Thomas). Aaron tries to kiss Adam after they are involved in a run-off road collision. Embarrassed, he tells Adam that he misunderstood the situation. Aaron sleeps with Holly, however, Adam informs his family that he thinks Aaron is gay. Aaron denies it but Holly ends the relationship. Child sexual abuse: In 2015, it was revealed Aaron had been sexually abused by his father Gordon (Gary Mavers) when he was from the age of 8 before Gordon kicked him out. Ultimately, Gordon was imprisoned years later - but took his own life while in prison. Relationship with Jackson Walsh: Aaron and Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock) started dating after a tumultuous start to knowing each other. Their story ultimately ended in heartbreak, as Jackson died by assisted suicide. Suicide attempt: A harrowing storyline from 2010 saw a then-teenage Aaron attempt to take his own life. Relationship with Robert Sugden: Aaron and long-standing character Robert Sugden were romantically linked following the latter's return in 2014. Nicknamed "Robron", the pair married in 2018, however, Robert exited the soap in 2019. Robert arrived just as John and Aaron were about to make their vows to one another. But will which brother will Aaron choose? And what will the rest of the village think about Robert being back? ITV pulled the episode from its streaming service ITVX ahead of its usual 7am broadcast in an effort to maintain the surprise for fans. Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and ITVX. 4

Emmerdale pulled from schedule at last minute as Robert Sugden makes shock return to soap

EMMERDALE has been pulled from its usual schedule at the last minute ahead of Robert Sugden's big return. Normally, the soap is available to watch at 7am on ITVX ahead of its weekdays evening airings. 4 4 4 However, fans will have to wait a little longer to see the next instalment. The show's X account shared: "FYI: Emmerdale will not be available to stream tomorrow (Wed 28th) at 7am on ITVX. "So we'll see you all at 7.30pm on ITV1 instead, yeah? You bring the biscuits and we'll make the brews (we'll try to not spill any tea)." A major storyline sees Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) preparing to marry the village's secret killer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). John's desire to be seen as a hero has taken over his life - and he now has a murderous secret. But after the latest shocking twist, will he and Aaron even make it to the altar? The Sun previously revealed Ryan Hawley would be making a shock return as Robert Sugden. Robert - who is Aaron's ex-husband - will be back on screens imminently for a short stint. The character is also John's half-brother although the two have yet to meet. A source said previously: 'It's the biggest secret in soapland but Robert is returning to Emmerdale. 'F--- you Emmerdale!' scream fans as Aaron Dingle recreates roadside romp with hunky newcomer 'Ryan has a lot of respect for the show and its fans and he really wanted to give them a treat so he agreed to come back for a brief stint. 'It's going to be a huge surprise for fans especially the Robron fans who have missed Robert desperately since Ryan quit. 'Nothing was seen as being too extreme to keep the secret with fake names on scripts, smuggling him in and out of the studios and keeping everything very tight.' Emmerdale had no comment when contacted by The Sun. The Sun revealed back in 2019 that actor Ryan had quit the show to take on other roles. He was written out in an explosive storyline that saw him kill his sister Victoria's rapist Lee Posner accidentally. Robert pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to 14 years in prison for murder. However it later emerged that Lee's death could have been caused by a brutal fight he had with his brother Luke the day of his death, leaving the door open for a potential release for Robert. Emmerdale killer John Sugden strikes again on wedding day to Aaron Dingle

EMMERDALE killer John Sugden has struck again. The maniacal medic - who is played by actor Oliver Farnworth in the ITV soap - has already murdered Nate Robinson in a shock twist last year. 2 2 But now he's killed again as his ex-boyfriend Aidan woke up from his coma. Forced into going to the hospital by Aidan's unwitting mum, John wasted no time in showing his true colours. After raging about how weak Aidan was and revealing that he put him in the coma, John soon decided that Aidan had to die. 'I wanted to get something that would be easier for you - painless,' he said. 'So you'd just drift off. But your mum wouldn't leave me alone so this is all I could grab.' Producing a needle, John attached it to Aidan's IV line - and prepared to kill him by putting air into his blood to kill him. John added menacingly: 'It's just going to be a little bit of air. They won't notice it but you… 'I have to, you'll tell them what happened but you'll twist it and lie. I know you will and I can't have that. 'I loved you and I am so so sorry.' But as he went to kill Aidan, John hesitated - and it had devastating results. Aidan's terror saw him suffer a cardiac arrest - and he died as John ignored the chance to save him. Instead he waited and then pretended to fight to save him after alerting the neighbours. Later when Aaron arrived and found John there he was furious - and called off the wedding before driving off.

Later in the week the day of Julie's funeral arrives, and Eileen gives Brian a letter from Julie. This leads to him confronting her over Julie's life insurance policy, pointing out that she's the only beneficiary yet failed to mention it. Tracy Barlow pipes up and accuses Eileen of orchestrating her sister's death for the money, but it's George Eileen turns on as she blames him for the funeral being ruined.
