Gio van Bronckhorst to land Liverpool job under Arne Slot as Premier League champions go double dutch

The former Rangers manager is set to replace Johnny Heitinga on the Anfield coaching staff after his departure to Ajax Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to join Arne Slot's coaching staff at Liverpool. The former Rangers boss is poised to return to the dugout for the first time since leaving Besiktas last year, with the English Premier League champions to add him to Slot's staff as an assistant to his compatriot and fellow Feyenoord coaching alumni. ‌ The Reds started the search after Johnny Heitinga left this summer to take the manager's job and former club Ajax. ‌ And Slot is set to go Dutch again by bringing van Bronckhorst into the fold. Former Everton man Heitinga proved a popular figure in the Anfield dressing room, working under slot for just over a year. But the chance to take over at his hometown team in Amsterdam was too big to turn down and he was appointed after previous boss Francesco Farioli stepped down following a final day collapse that saw Ajax miss out on the Eredivise title by a point to PSV. Now van Bronckhorst, who was in the Ibrox hotseat for a year before being sacked in November 2022 for slipping too far behind Celtic, is set for a return to football with the Merseyside club. The Dutchman was replaced at Rangers by Steven Gerrard's former assistant and ex-Liverpool academy coach Michael Beale, with many feeling in hindsight that van Bronckhorst was harshly treated by the Gers hierarchy. ‌ Van Bronckhorst began his career at Feyenoord before joining the Light Blues in 1998. After three years in Govan, he joined Arsenal before making the move to Barcelona, the finishing his playing career back at Feyenoord. He became the boss at De Kuip in 2015 and led the Rotterdam club to their first Eredivise title for 18 years in 2016. Liverpool coach and Arne Slot's right-hand man is lined up by Ajax after their incredible title race choke for his first permanent managerial job

Ajax are looking to poach Arne Slot 's right-hand man Johnny Heitinga as the Amsterdam club look for a new manager. Heitinga, the former Everton defender, played an important role in Liverpool 's Premier League title triumph but looks ready to take on a first-team managerial role next season. The 41-year-old held an interim role at Ajax in 2023 before joining David Moyes 's staff at West Ham. The now Everton boss spoke very highly of his coaching ability. He was headhunted by Slot last year to form part of his backroom team and leads training sessions and helps with analysis, taking on the role as mentor to several players, including Ryan Gravenberch. He also speaks several languages including Spanish which has been helpful for the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. West Brom considered taking him on mid-season but he was committed to winning the league at Liverpool. Arne Slot (left) believes his right-hand man is ready to take the leap into a managerial role Asked about the possibility of Heitinga leaving last week, Slot said: 'If Ajax would be smart, they would consider him. He is ready to take on a job like that. 'If John is smart, he would stay one more season.'

'Mersey mayhem'

The last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park did not disappoint, with four goals, four red cards, a VAR wait and a post-match scrap. The night is being labelled "Mersey Mayhem," on Thursday's national newspaper back pages, while some pundits and fans are calling it a "fitting end" to such a fierce rivalry at the famous venue. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said on X: "That was a classic! Sickener at the end but fair play to the Blues as the goal was a cracker. Fitting way I suppose to end this fixture at Goodison. I know people think I'm the celebration police, but I do hope that lad kept the corner flag! Seven points clear, 14 to go." And as the Reds' challenge for the Premier League title continues to mount, they will now be without head coach Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff as they were both shown red cards by referee Michael Oliver at full-time. That means former Everton defender Johnny Heitinga will be leading Liverpool on the touchline for the next two games, with popular outlet The Anfield Wrap cheekily posting on X:: "Johnny Heitinga will be leading Liverpool FC on the touchline for the next two games. Not a sentence I ever thought I'd say!"
