Manchester United were hoping to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but Mirror Football understands that the 27-year-old has rejected a move to Old Trafford and would prefer to join Arsenal instead. Hugo Ekitike Hugo Ekitike has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive campaign where he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games for Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Sky Germany, United have opened talks with Frankfurt over a deal and the Bundesliga side are demanding a fee of around £85million. However, the report adds that both Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Ekitike. Victor Osimhen Victor Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli this summer after spending last season on loan at Galatasaray, netting 37 goals in 41 appearances. The Sun are reporting that he has emerged as a 'genuine back-up plan' for United after they missed out on Gyokeres, with Osimhen recently rejecting a hugely lucrative offer from Al-Hilal as he wants to remain in Europe. Jean-Philippe Mateta Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford after scoring 17 goals last season and helping his side lift the FA Cup. Mateta would be a more affordable signing given his contract is due to expire in 2027 and French outlet L'Equipe have previously reported that United have 'already positioned themselves' to make a move for the 27-year-old. Manchester United are the latest Premier League club to be linked with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike after learning that Viktor Gyokeres will not move to Old Trafford this summer Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has set his sights on joining Arsenal after telling Manchester United that he won't be moving to Old Trafford. The Swedish striker feels he needs to join a club that will be playing in the Champions League next season and wants to challenge for the Premier League title. Sources at United have refused to comment on reports from Portugal that the 27-year-old has told the club that he has no interest in linking up again with his former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim in Manchester. But it is understood that the Reds have already started looking at alternative targets - and that they are ready to ramp up their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. Ekitike, 22, the France Under-21 international has also been attracting the attention of Liverpool after scoring 22 goals for the German club last season. But Frankfurt's £80million valuation of the former Paris St Germain forward will have to be lowered significantly before United table a bid. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has made it his mission to add more goals to Mikel Arteta 's squad next season. The Gunners have drawn up a shortlist that also includes RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Atletico Madrid's former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez. Berta met with Sporting director of football Bernardo Palmeiro in Menorca last week to discuss Gyokeres. The former Coventry striker has scored an impressive 97 goals in 102 games in Portugal. And with Bayern Munich now registering an interest in Slovakian International Sesko and Argentine World Cup winner Alvarez settled in Spain, it appears that Gyokeres ticks a lot of boxes. One major issue is that the player's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, has become embroiled in an ugly war of words with Sporting president Frederico Varandas. Cetinkaya insists he has a written guarantee from the Sporting chief promising to do a deal with any club offering £59million. Varandas has countered by claiming that while he did make a verbal agreement to sell Gyokeres for less than the £84.7million get-out clause stipulated in his contract he is yet to set a valuation. Now Varandas is threatening to impose the full terms of the buy-out after being angered further by a threat that Gyokeres could go on strike to force through a sale. The row is further complicated by Cetinkaya's revelation that Sporting will have to pay him almost £6million if they reject an official bid of £51million up front and £8million in add-ons. But according to sources close to Sporting, they have told coach Rui Borges to prepare for the next season without his top goalscorer and have started the process of recruiting a replacement. There has also been confirmation from Portugal that Coventry will get a 10 percent cut of any fee that Sporting generate from selling Gyokeres. The Sky Blues had originally negotiated a 15 percent concession as part of the deal that took the Swede to Lisbon for £20million two seasons ago. New signing Essugo ready to play Caicedo's understudy
Chelsea's new midfielder Dario Essugo knows what is in store for him at Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old signed for £18.5million from Sporting in March but was officially unveiled as a Blues player last week. In discussion with the club's media channels, he highlighted how he is a similar style of "aggressive" defensive midfield player to Moises Caicedo and also picked the reigning winner of both of Chelsea's player of the season awards, as the person is he most looking forward to playing he also recognise that he will mostly be lining up with the Ecaudorian in training rather than in matches and will operate as his understudy. Essugo, a Portugal Under-21s international, could not be more similar to Caicedo in terms of style, operating as a mobile and powerful ball-winning option in midfield. After all, Chelsea ran the risk of breaking Caicedo last season when he started all 38 Premier League matches. He also started six further cup matches, although that was helped by Chelsea's heavy rotation in most Conference League games, and early exits from both domestic cups. Caicedo was also only substituted in four league matches. No-one played more minutes than the 3,815 played by Caicedo at Chelsea last season and, with Champions League qualification secured for next season, he needs a reliable deputy. Who is Essugo? In the midfielder's own words, he is also a "chill" character away from the pitch. He grew up in the Odivelas suburb of Lisbon, was a multi-sport athlete in his youth but took to football in the school playground. He first suffered a rejection from his mother's handball club at CAC da Pontinha Club but soon impressed UD Santa Maria Club, before ultimately ending up in Sporting's academy. Essugo achieved his goal of emulating his idol William Carvalho, now at Betis, by lining up for Sporting in midfield, aged just 16 and six days old. After becoming the youngest player to play for Sporting, he became the youngest Portuguese player to play in the Champions League, playing in a competition that other idols, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, N'Golo Kante and Toni Kroos, all excelled in. Those idols showed Essugo looked towards La Liga and, after a loan spell at Portuguese second division Chaves, he played in Spain's top flight last season with Las relegated, Essugo played well enough to attract Chelsea and said of the spell at the island nation on his Instagram account: "It's been a season of personal growth, with highs and lows, but at all times I tried to leave it all on the field."But his post when leaving Sporting was more emotional, despite only making 25 appearances in the first team, he wrote: "I believe I left something worth keeping - a piece of my childhood, my youth, my soul."Essugo targets "playing as much as he can" despite being Caicedo's understudy in a competitive midfield space, featuring Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - and returning loanee Andrey said: "I want to win as much as possible, as many titles as possible. Obviously, I want to win the Champions League, but also the Premier League because it's very difficult. I want to win titles, play as much as possible at Chelsea and be part of the club's history."The first time we will see Essugo is at the Club World Cup and he could make his debut for Chelsea against LAFC on Monday evening. Longer term, he will relieve the pressure on Caciedo as Chelsea embark of their return to the demanding Champions League after three seasons away.
