What Rodgers thought was 'incredible' at Celtic vs Newcastle
The Northern Irishman's side came away with an impressive performance and result as they thumped the English Premier League outfit with two goals in the first half and two in the second. Arne Engels, Johnny Kenny, Yang and Liam Scales found the net as optimism grew for the season ahead and gave the manager plenty to be optimistic about. On the flip side, it will not have made for pleasant viewing for Newcastle supporters. However, Rodgers had plenty of words of encouragement for their fan base after their own impressive showing off the park, branding their following "absolutely incredible." He also reckons Eddie Howe's team team will be absolutely fine once the competitive stuff comes around. "I primarily focus on my own team but, two weeks ahead, you start that little bit earlier," the Celtic boss told said. "Newcastle will get there. They're obviously building up. "But we're still playing against really top players who, if they're playing two 45s, will certainly be at a good level for 45 minutes or want to be. Read more: "It's great for a club like Newcastle to come here. You've seen their support. It was absolutely incredible, which made for a great atmosphere in the stadium with nearly 50,000 here." Howe admitted post-match that Celtic was a test that perhaps came too soon for his men at this early stage of their pre-season. "We take a load from that. That was a really good test for us," he told Newcastle club media. "This was a test that maybe came a little bit too early for us. "We've had a long week in Austria. Not making excuses by the way but the lads came into the game jaded, slightly. "It was a great workout for us. I think Celtic played very well. "I thought we played well in phases of the game, we created chances and should have scored a couple of goals. "Overall, I think the team will be better for the game."

Johnny Kenny has Celtic message for transfer recruits amid Idah and Maeda striker fight
The striker impressed against Newcastle United to continue his top pre-season firm Johnny Kenny has vowed to push to compete with countryman Adam Idah - and another other strikers who might arrive at Celtic before the end of the window. Kenny followed up his pre-season winner against Queen's Park two weeks ago with the second goal to take the wind out Newcastle United 's sails in the 4-0 pre-season rout. The 22-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Shamrock Rovers, missed a huge opportunity shortly beforehand. But Kenny ran himself into the ground and has now set his targets for the season with a clear message to Brendan Rodgers. He said: 'Of course. I want to go out every day in front of the manager and make a claim for the position. 'Obviously there's going to be a lot of rotation but I want to be in there chipping in with goals for this amazing club. 'The more competition the better. Every day is a challenge at big clubs. ' Adam is my fellow countryman and us Irish look after each other and he's been brilliant with me since I came back in through the door. 'Daizen (Maeda) too. He's a joy to play with. You can never write him off, he's amazing. To play with someone like that is a joy. 'It was great to get a run out again. To get a goal was a bonus. 'The manager has been brilliant with me, giving me the opportunity to play against big opposition. I just want to take it and learn every day. 'It was a tough test physically and mentally but we handled it very well. The manager said before the game we can beat them with the pace on the ball and moving the ball and we were very good that way.' Celtic impressed in front of their own fans with a 4-0 demolition of Newcastle United in the Adidas Trophy at Parkhead. More than 10,000 Newcastle supporters made the trip to Glasgow to watch their side in action against the Scottish Premiership champions, but they were given little to cheer about as the Magpies were a clear second best in their first friendly of the season. And the hosts doubled their advantage right on half time when Newcastle keeper Nick Pope misjudged the flight of a Kasper Schmeichel clearance, the ball bouncing over his head and allowing Johnny Kenny a simple tap-in. Winger Yang Hjun-jun made it 3-0 on 52 minutes after good work from Daizen Maeda before Liam Scales completed the scoring on 79 minutes. Scotland defender Kieran Tierney, who rejoined Celtic earlier this summer after six seasons at Arsenal, came on as a second half substitute and set up Scales' goal. They head to Denmark to take on FC Midtjylland in Herning on Thursday and prepared for that encounter with a 2-0 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers in Darren McGregor's testimonial match. After a goalless first half, the English League One side took the lead on 56 minutes through a fine individual strike from Amario Cozier-Duberry and they sealed the win four minutes from tie through Sonny Sharples Ahmed. Hibs let midfielder leave Hibs, who earlier in the day announced that midfielder Allan Delferriere had left the club by mutual consent, fielding a strong team. Club record signing Thibault Klidje came on as a substitute following his £1m move from Luzern earlier in the week. Aberdeen do not enter Europe until next month and they continued their pre-season preparations with a closed-door friendly at Fulham Athletic's Motspur Park training ground. Celtic starlet reveals his Parkhead 'dream' as forgotten man edges towards exit door
The Celtic youngster has opened up on his future at Parkhead. Sign up to our Football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Celtic starlet Johnny Kenny admits he is desperate to make his mark on Brendan Rodgers' first team this season, but says he will put full trust in the 'brilliant' head coach's plan for him moving forward following suggestions he could be available for loan. The 21-year-old striker broke into the Celtic first team in the second-half of last season following a goal-laden spell on loan at League Of Ireland club Shamrock Rovers, scoring his first goal in the 5-1 demolition of Aberdeen at Pittodrie, where he made his full debut for the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Johnny Kenny flourished on loan at Shamrock Rovers in 2024. | Getty Images Subject of a failed £500,000 bid from EFL League One side Bolton Wanderers last week, Kenny says he has no plans to depart Celtic Park this summer, though he will follow the club's wishes if they feel a loan move is good for his development. 'I'd love to sign a new contract at this club,' Kenny told the IrishExaminer. 'It's the club I want to play for at the end of the day. Since I came back in January, I can't describe how good the manager has been for me. Obviously, he wants me to sign a new deal, so that's very promising for me at this club. I'm happy to sign a new contract. 'The manager will make his decision on that (another loan move). Wherever I am, I want to play football. I want to develop myself, and I think playing games is going to develop me. I want to try and break into the national team, and I think playing games is the way I'm going to get into that team. 'I think the manager will have a pathway for me, and I don't think he's going to keep me here and not play me. So whatever the manager decides, I'm all behind, because everything he's told me since January has been 100 per cent, so I believe in the manager. I came in, learned my trade the last few months, learned the system in and out of possession. I feel like I'm ready to kick on now and hopefully get the opportunities to do that. My dream is to represent this club on a daily basis.' Kwon spent last season on loan at Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs, but struggled for regular game time at Easter Road and is expected to depart on a permanent deal, with various clubs credited with an interest.
