‘Flood prevention rules to be updated'
Continuous rainfall from March 19 to 20 this year caused floods in parts of Taman Tampoi Indah 2, Johor Baru. — Filepic Johor government will hold workshops to enable all 16 local authorities to better tackle floods, said state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. The housing and local government committee chairman said they would start with local councils in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone as these faced the most flood-related issues. 'Our workshops since 2023 focused on getting higher allocations for flood mitigation efforts, and improving enforcement. 'This year, we will focus on improving regulations, especially for retention ponds, irrigation and drainage systems. 'This also includes standard operating procedures (SOP) that developers must follow before starting work on a site,' he said in an interview. He added that the workshops would begin in the third quarter of this year. Under the SOP, developers must build retention ponds before starting a project. Mohd Jafni also said outdated regulations must be reviewed. 'The regulations had been in use for more than 10 years and can no longer cope with the current volume of rainfall which is four to six times more than before,' he said. Mohd Jafni said earlier workshops had yielded some results. 'Just this year we received more than RM100mil, which is likely one of the highest allocation amounts from the Housing and Local Government Ministry for flood-related issues,' he disclosed. He said that some RM213mil had been allocated to carry out over 350 flood-related projects since 2023. This includes RM106mil for flood mitigation efforts involving all local authorities this year. 'Of the 123 projects for this year, 16 are under Johor Baru City Council, which has been allocated about RM42mil. 'Another 16 are under Pasir Gudang City Council with RM9.1mil, while 13 are under Iskandar Puteri City Council with some RM36mil' said Mohd Jafni. 'Through the projects, we hope to resolve at least half of the flood issues,' he added.

Sarawak MSSM divers exceed expectations

KUCHING (May 31): Sarawak's young divers are charting a bold new course toward international waters after dominating the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) diving championship. Held from May 24-28 at the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre, the event saw Sarawak rise to the top of the national diving scene with a commanding medal haul of nine golds, two silvers and six bronzes. The victory was hard-earned against stiff competition, with Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur finishing second with two golds, four silvers and two bronze medals while Selangor were placed third with one gold, three silvers and one bronze. Other teams in contention included Sabah, Penang, Johor, Perlis, Perak and Federal Territory of Labuan. Despite the strong field, it was Sarawak's consistent excellence across all age categories that set them apart from the rest of the teams. In the Boys' Under-18 division, Muhammad Lutfir Rahman struck gold in the 1m springboard and added a silver in the 3m springboard, while teammate Soh Tze Kang delivered another gold in the 3m springboard. In the Girls' Under-18 category, Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi secured a silver in the 3m springboard event. The winning momentum continued in the Under-15 category, with Brayden Wong claiming gold in the 3m springboard and bronze in the 1m springboard. On the girls' side, Cecelia Olivia dominated with double golds in both the 1m and 3m springboard, while Nur Ikmas Darwisyah contributed two bronze medals. Sarawak's youngest divers also made their mark. In the Boys' Under-12 division, Muhammad Hijri Rayyan captured gold in the 1m and bronze in the 3m springboard, while Awang Sharzan Zaqwan earned gold in the 3m and bronze in the 1m. For the Under-12 girls, Nur Aryna Balqis emerged as a double gold medallist in the 1m and 3m springboar, while Izara Leanne Sufeeya delivered strong fourth-place finishes in both events. To Sarawak head coach Shi Yang, the MSSM results exceeded all expectations. 'I didn't expect that we could win many gold medals and we were all very surprised. 'Our divers gave an outstanding performance by showing mental strength, great technique and resilience under pressure,' he added. However, the coach from China was quick to shift focus towards what lies ahead. 'This victory is just the beginning. Now we are preparing for the SEA Age Group Championships in Singapore. Litterbugs beware: AI eyes are watching in Johor
JOHOR BARU: Illegal dumping in Johor Jaya will soon come with consequences, as artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras are being deployed to identify offenders. In a bold new move to clean up the streets, the Johor government has installed AI cameras to monitor and catch those who dispose of rubbish illegally, particularly in commercial zones notorious for repeat offences. State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the pilot project kicked off in Taman Johor Jaya following a flood of complaints from the public about mounting rubbish and repeated dumping. "Despite regular clean-up efforts by the Johor Baru City Council, the problem persists. "Some areas see rubbish piling up faster than it can be cleared," Ling said after inspecting the site today. The system, called Enter AI, is a smart camera equipped with facial recognition technology that records illegal dumping and helps identify the culprits. "Once offenders are identified, we can take appropriate legal action. "This initiative is in line with the decree by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who wants a serious push towards improving cleanliness in the state," Ling said. A special task force has been set up to pursue longer-term solutions, including tightening enforcement, reviewing existing waste laws, and stepping up public awareness campaigns.

Johor allocates RM213mil for 353 flood management projects
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government will have spent RM213mil to implement 353 flood management projects in hotspots involving 16 local government authorities since 2023. State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said that for 2025 alone, the state has allocated RM106.2mil to implement 104 projects in flood hotspots involving 16 local authorities. He said the Johor Baru City Council received the highest allocation of RM42.4mil to implement 16 flood management projects, followed by the Iskandar Puteri City Council (RM36.1mil; 13 projects), Pasir Gudang City Council (RM9.1mil; 16 projects) and the Kulai Municipal Council (RM5.7mil; 15 projects). The projects involve, among others, upgrading reservoirs, building small dams along drains and raising the drain walls to avoid flooding in the low-lying areas, he said, adding that the methods for solving the flood issue vary from area to area. Apart from that, he said development must also be kept under control. "We have found over the past three years that areas that used to be flood-free have become flooded due to uncontrolled development," he told a press conference here on Wednesday (May 21). Mohd Jafni said there was also a need to improve the conditions and specifications for drainage and flood management in planning permission in line with the rapid pace of development and changing rainfall patterns. "The specifications given to these developers are specifications that are 10, 15 years old and are not relevant to the amount of rainfall that falls now, which has increased five or six times. "If we control the development part, and we solve these flood hotspot areas, the flood problems can be resolved," he said. - Bernama

Cops arrest 84 in Johor's Ops Noda Khas
JOHOR BARU: Eighty-four people were arrested in Johor in simultaneous statewide operations codenamed Ops Noda Khas from May 12 until May 13. Johor Police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the operation aimed to eliminate prostitution activities, the misuse of social visit passes, the hiring of foreign women without valid work permits and the operation of unlicensed premises. 'We are targeting karaoke centres, entertainment outlets, beauty and wellness centres, food outlets, hotels, massage parlours and homestays,'' he said in a statement on Thursday (May 15). Comm Kumar said of the 84 people detained, 15 were local men, two local women, six foreign males and 61 foreign females aged 19 to 55, for committing various offences. He said police also seized mobile phones, payment receipts, microphones, loudspeakers, televisions, condoms, massage oils, towels, tissues, duty rosters, a working time punch card machine and RM8,553 cash. 'The seized items will be used for investigation purposes,'' added Comm Kumar. He said the 17 locals arrested have been remanded under Section 17 of the Malaysian Criminal Procedures Code, while the 67 foreigners were held under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid travel documents and working without work permits. Comm Kumar said an investigation was conducted under the following offence provisions: Section 6(2) and Section 11(2) of the Johor State Entertainment and Entertainment Places Enactment 4/98. Section 55B, Section 55E and Section 6(1)(c), Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Rules 39(b) of the Immigration Rules 1963. Section 372(A), Section 372(B) and Section 373 of the Penal Code, Section 107(6) of the Local Government Act 1976, Section 3(1) Trade, Business and Industry Licensing By-law (Johor Baru City Council) 2016. 'We have conducted 97 raids at prostitution dens statewide from January to April 2025, 383 were arrested, of whom 70 were locals and 313 foreigners for various offences,'' he said.
