Johor to revoke licences of car wash operators who reject locals for Singaporeans

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Local authorities in Johor Bahru will be instructed to revoke the business licences of car wash operators who refuse to serve Malaysians and cater only to foreign customers, especially from Singapore. Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said he viewed such behaviour seriously, following viral social media posts alleging that a car wash outlet in Johor Baru prioritised Singaporean vehicles. He said the state government would direct local councils to investigate such businesses and take firm action if the discriminatory practice continues, The Star reported. 'If someone is doing business in Johor but only prioritises foreigners while sidelining locals just for the sake of bigger profits, then we will not tolerate it,' he was quoted saying. Jafni added that he would instruct local councils to cancel the licences of any car wash operators who insist on only serving foreign-registered vehicles. He made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the Johor Property Expo (JPEX) 2025 at Angsana Johor Bahru Mall on Thursday. Jafni said the state government would not hesitate to act against business operators who ignore the needs of the local community in pursuit of profit. He reminded all business owners in Johor that while seeking profit is expected, they must also uphold corporate social responsibility by not neglecting locals.

Johor Royal Botanical Gardens opens to public with themed gardens, regal landmarks & access to the zoo

Johor has officially unveiled one of its most anticipated attractions — the Johor Royal Botanical Gardens, or Taman Botani Diraja Johor. Now open to the public, this expansive green haven is nestled within the regal grounds of the Istana Besar Johor and should be included in your itinerary. Covering 56 acres, the garden has been designed as a botanical showcase, featuring curated plant collections that highlight both Johor's native species and rare plants from beyond the state. Each section of the garden has its own theme, allowing visitors to journey through a variety of landscapes and ecosystems. Among the featured areas are the Heliconia & Ginger Garden, Rainforest Dipterocarp Zone, Orchid Garden, Herb Garden, and Palm Grove. Visitors can also explore the Tropical Endemic Collection, Pine Grove, Bamboo Garden, Fernarium, and the Exotic Garden. Adding to the garden's charm are other notable landmarks, featuring Bukit Bintang, Tugu Bendera, Laman Inggeris, Chinese Hall, Bukit Zaharah Castle and Japanese House, which offer peaceful resting spots and photo-taking opportunities throughout the grounds. A single loop around the garden covers a distance of approximately 2km, or 3K steps, which takes about 40 minutes to complete. For those wishing to wander further, the full walking route spans nearly 5km, or roughly 7.5K steps. Entry is kept accessible, with tickets priced at RM2 for Malaysian adults and senior citizens, and RM30 for non-Malaysian adults and seniors. Admission is free for children under 5 and for individuals with disabilities. Tickets must be secured in advance via the official online portal; no walk-ins available. This botanical garden forms a key part of Johor's wider tourism strategy ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026. To enhance connectivity and convenience, a new entrance is currently being developed to link the garden with the nearby Johor Zoo. Once complete, this integration will provide a smoother, more cohesive experience for guests exploring the city's natural and cultural attractions. One can only imagine what's next on the horizon, and personally, I can't wait to see what more Johor has in store. Johor MB urges immediate federal action on autogate glitches

Menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar customs, immigration and quarantine complex in Johor today. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Johor government has urged the federal authorities to act immediately to prevent a recurrence of the system disruption at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar customs, immigration and quarantine (BSI) complex in Johor today. Expressing disappointment over the disruption, menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said although there have been slight improvements in managing congestion, they remain insufficient. 'I have raised this matter directly with the relevant federal authorities. 'Such weaknesses not only inconvenience the public but may also tarnish the image of the state and nation, especially as this is one of the busiest entry points in the region,' he said in a Facebook post today. Long queues had built up at the BSI and Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) CIQs in Johor Bahru and other major entry points in the country, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 1 and 2, following the autogate glitches from yesterday. However, Malaysian passport holders were able to use the autogates without any problem. The Malaysian Border Control Agency attributed the disruption to data integration issues, which had slowed the cross-checking process in the MyIMMs system. Johor public works, transport, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Fazli Salleh said as of 6pm today, 26 out of 68 e-gates at BSI and three out of 12 at KSAB were back in service.

RM155,000 lost in 2023: Johor govt warns public to avoid middlemen scams over affordable housing

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 5 — The Johor government today reminded the public that no middlemen or agents have been appointed in the Johor Affordable Housing (RMMJ) application process. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said that scams have still been occurring, with individuals posing as middlemen and charging applicants illegal fees of up to RM15,000. 'These cases have been reported to the police and successfully uncovered with 18 cases of fraud involving a total loss of RM155,000 in 2023,' he said at the Johor state housing development management engagement session here today. Mohd Jafni said that prior to 2022, housing applications in Johor were handled manually and were dependent on developers. However, since the implementation of the Johor e-home system at the end of 2022, all developers must now register and sell their residential units transparently through the online portal. 'This measure is part of the law which aims to eliminate fraud and prevent the intervention of middlemen in the home application process,' he said. He added that most victims' applications did not meet basic requirements for the homes, making them easy targets.

Youth at 16? Johor govt plots early start to build next-gen leaders, says committee chair

JOHOR BARU, May 25 — The Johor government plans to introduce a minimum youth age as early as 16 years to provide early exposure to teenagers regarding the environment after school. Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said that by introducing a lower youth age at 16, teenagers will have the opportunity to join youth associations, which in turn ensures that these associations have strong successors. 'The Johor government is currently studying ways to further empower our youth, starting from the age of 16. 'When they start fostering the spirit of associations at the age of 16, they will not be surprised by the culture of associations after they leave the school environment,' he said. He said this after officiating the National Youth Day 2025 celebration at the Johor state level in conjunction with the 2025 Johor Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) at Toppen Shopping Centre here today. He said that a consultation session with the Department of Education, the Youth Council, and related agencies will be held to discuss the matter, which is expected to be resolved in the near future. Meanwhile, he said the government is not yet ready to lower the youth age limit to 30 years from 40 as to be enforced at the national level next year and will review the matter in depth. PMR is organised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU) as part of the government's ongoing efforts under the Malaysia Madani framework to bring government services directly to the people in selected states. The three-day 2025 Johor PMR, with the theme 'Belia Madani, Yakin Boleh!', which began on Friday, features more than 100 direct services provided by federal government agencies and the Johor government. The Ministry of Youth and Sports is the leading ministry while the state government is the host. — Bernama
