New fresh steamed fish sets from $7.50 in Joo Chiat, loaded with gerang assam & more
If you've ever wandered through Joo Chiat's rows of colourful shophouses and cafes, simply looking for a quick, cheap meal that doesn't skimp on flavour, the newly opened Joy of Fish might just be your new go-to.
Joy of Fish finally opened at the end of Jul 2025, following their initial announcement back in May. This humble steamed fish stall specialises in the Straits Fish, or Marine Tilapia, a proudly Singaporean local produce farmed in the West Johor Straits.
Raised in sea cages under Singapore Food Agency's strict safety and sustainability standards, this premium catch is a responsibly sourced pick that's as kind to the planet as it is to your taste buds. It also stands out as a lean source of protein that's naturally lower in fat compared to richer fish like salmon, making it firmer in texture while still delivering essential nutrients.
Here at Joy of Fish, there's no such thing as reheated leftovers, as each tilapia is steamed-on-demand in a combi oven, locking in all that natural sweetness and tender texture. Customers can choose from a range of traditional sauces that are piled on the fish generously, from the tangy-spicy Gerang Assam and comforting Minced Ginger, to the fragrant Hong Kong-style soy sauce.
Sets start from just S$7.50 for the Marine Tilapia Steam with HK Style Sauce, which includes the fish, vegetable of the day, and rice. This is a reminder that healthy and balanced meals don't have to break the bank, okay.
While every variation has its fans, the Marine Tilapia Steam with Sauce (S$9) is a standout here. The lively blend of tamarind, chilli, and spices makes for a sauce so good it demands an extra spoonful of rice!
Joy of Fish's mission is simple: to create affordable, delectable protein meals that fit seamlessly into our everyday dining, while showcasing Singapore's premium seafood. With its location in the heart of our beloved Peranakan district, it's a fitting tribute to local flavours, old and new.
What are you waiting for? Let's FEASH!
