Bengaluru Metro becomes lifeline: Liver transported via Namma Metro for transplant in landmark operation
In a groundbreaking move, Bengaluru's Namma Metro was used to transport a human liver for transplant, significantly reducing travel time and setting a precedent for urban medical emergencies. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) executed the operation in coordination with medical personnel and security teams, making the city only the second in India after Hyderabad, to utilise metro services for organ transport. The liver, retrieved from a donor at Vydehi Hospital in Whitefield, began its journey at 8:38 pm on Friday. It was first taken by ambulance to the nearby Whitefield metro station. There, a team consisting of a doctor and seven support staff coordinated closely with BMRCL officials. An Assistant Security Officer (ASO) facilitated documentation and ensured all safety protocols were in place. At 8:42 pm, the liver was placed aboard a regular metro train bound for Rajarajeshwarinagar station, a ride spanning nearly the entire east-west corridor of the city. Covering a distance of 32 km, the organ reached its destination at 9:48 pm, just over an hour later. On arrival, another ASO and metro staff swiftly handed over the organ to a waiting ambulance, which then rushed it to Sparsh Hospital for a time-sensitive transplant procedure. BMRCL said the operation was carried out in strict adherence to the Joint Procedure Order (JPO) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) guidelines, ensuring minimal disruption to regular services while prioritising the medical emergency. This marks the first time Namma Metro has been used for such a critical mission, showcasing its potential to assist in life-saving interventions during peak traffic hours. The only other example of metro-based organ transport in India was in 2021, when Hyderabad Metro helped move a donated heart 21 km in under 30 minutes.

Namma Metro transports human liver for transplant; becomes second metro network in country to ferry organ
In a first-of-its-kind development for the city, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) facilitated the transportation of a donated human liver for transplant – marking Bengaluru's entry into a select list of cities leveraging rapid transit systems for life-saving medical emergencies. At 8.38 pm on Friday, an ambulance carrying the liver left Vydehi Hospital and reached Whitefield metro station, where a team comprising a doctor and seven medical personnel coordinated with BMRCL staff. The team was received by an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and metro personnel, who helped with documentation and security procedures. The liver was transported on a metro train that departed Whitefield station at 8.42 pm and reached Rajarajeshwarinagar metro station by 9.48 pm. Upon arrival, another ASO and Metro staff ensured a smooth transition to a waiting ambulance, which took the organ to Sparsh Hospital for a critical transplant procedure. The distance between the two hospitals is 32 km, which takes roughly 1.5 hours to cover. 'We facilitated organ transport with passengers on board. We had given the medical professionals the last coach of the train. Most of the procedures and subsequent arrangements took place within minutes, spontaneously,' said a BMRCL official. BMRCL also stated that the entire operation was carried out as per the Joint Procedure Order (JPO) and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The successful execution of this mission makes Bengaluru only the second city in India to use a metro system for organ transport. In 2021, Hyderabad Metro facilitated the transport of a heart, harvested from a brain-dead donor. The organ was taken to Nagole metro station by ambulance and then transported on a non-stop, passenger-free metro train to Jubilee Hills Check Post station – covering 21 km in under 30 minutes. In 2023, MoHUA amended the Metro Railways (Carriage and Ticket) Rules, 2014, allowing the transport of human organs or tissues via metro, provided a hospital-authorised person carries them under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994.

At the destination, another team of metro officials and security personnel assisted the medical team in transferring the organ to a waiting ambulance. 'It was then safely delivered to Sparsh Hospital in time for a life-saving transplant procedure,' the officials added. According to BMRCL, the entire operation was carried out under guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and as per the Joint Procedure Order (JPO) of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The organ-carrying team covered the entire 31-km journey in less than an hour — a trip that could have taken over three hours by road on a congested Friday evening. Young donor, young recipient The donated liver — retrieved from a 24-year-old accident victim whose family generously donated the organs — was urgently needed by a critical patient at Sparsh Hospital, R.R. Nagar. The recipient, a young male suffering from severe hepatitis-related liver failure, had been on the transplant waiting list for over two months, desperately hoping for a suitable match. 'Time was of the essence. If we had taken the road, the organ could have been wasted due to heavy weekend traffic. The Metro transport gave us the fastest and safest option. We are deeply grateful to the BMRCL and SOTTO Karnataka for their swift and wholehearted support,' said Mahesh Gopasetty, senior consultant, Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at the hospital. The complex transplant surgery, conducted overnight, concluded successfully around 3 a.m. on Saturday. The patient is currently in the ICU, stable and under post-operative care.
