Joliet shooting: 2 teens arrested after traffic stop

The Brief Police in Joliet arrested two men following a shooting Saturday night that left two teens with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the leg. One of the victims was later identified as 19-year-old Devejuan Norris, who was also charged with possessing a stolen firearm and unlawfully carrying a weapon. A second suspect, Jeremy Franklin, was cited for driving with a suspended license and unlawful possession of ammunition. JOLIET Ill. - Two men were arrested after a shooting in Joliet Saturday night that left two teens with gunshot wounds, according to police. What we know The shooting happened around 10:22 p.m. in the 900 block of Marion Street, according to Joliet police. A short time later, officers pulled over a Chevrolet Cruz that was seen speeding away from the area near Jefferson and May streets. Inside the car, officers found an 18-year-old man in the backseat suffering from a gunshot to the leg. He was treated at the scene and then transported to St. Joseph Medical Center. Police identified the driver as 18-year-old Jeremy Franklin. Devejuan Norris, 19, was also a passenger in the vehicle. According to police, Norris was carrying a loaded handgun in his waistband and was sitting on another gun, which was confirmed stolen. Ammunition was also recovered from the vehicle. Franklin was arrested and later released on a notice to appear for unlawful possession of ammunition. He was also cited for driving with a suspended license. Norris was booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility and charged with possession of a stolen firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. Shortly after the traffic stop, a second gunshot victim, a 17-year-old boy, arrived at St. Joseph Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police believe both teens were shot near the 900 block of Marion Street. A nearby garage and an unoccupied vehicle were also struck by gunfire. Weller was a 20-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department and is survived by his wife and three children. JOLIET, Ill. - Sgt. Hollis Weller, a 20-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department, was killed on Friday in a car crash in southeastern Will County, the department said. Weller, 47, was a "highly respected and dedicated 20-year-veteran" of the department, according to a news release. What we know The crash took place around 11:45 a.m. on Illinois Rt. 1 north of Eagle Lake Road near Beecher, according to the Illinois State Police. Troopers responded to the scene for a three-vehicle crash involving a turck-tractor semi-trailer, a pick-up truck and a passenger car. ISP said one person died and another was taken to an area hospital with injuries. The roadway was shut down for several hours. It was unclear which vehicle Weller was inside of during the crash. The backstory Weller was promoted to sergeant in July of 2020 and most recently served in the JPD's Traffic Unit. Weller also earned numerous awards, including the Award for Heroism in 2015. He is survived by his wife and three children. "We respectfully ask the public to keep Sgt. Weller's family, as well as the men and women of the Joliet Police Department, in their thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable loss," the department said in the news release.

Joliet police sergeant killed in off-duty crash near Beecher, Illinois

A Joliet, Illinois, police sergeant was killed in a car crash while off duty on Friday near south suburban Beecher. Joliet Police confirmed Sgt. Hollis Weller, 47, died in a crash on Friday in southeastern Will County. Illinois State Police said a semi-trailer truck, a pickup truck, and a car collided around 11:45 a.m. on Illinois Route 1 near Eagle Lake Road in Washington Township near Beecher. Weller was killed in the crash. Another person was injured and was taken to the hospital. It was not immediately clear which vehicle Weller was in. The road was closed until about 6:30 p.m. after the crash. Weller was a 20-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department, and had been a sergeant since July 2020. "Sgt. Weller was a decorated Officer whose commitment to service was recognized with numerous awards, including the Award for Heroism in 2015. He was a leader, a mentor, and a friend to many," Joliet Police said in a statement. Weller is survived by his wife and three children.

Pedestrian critically hurt after being hit by car in Joliet, Illinois, police say

A pedestrian was hospitalized after being hit by a car Wednesday night in Joliet, Illinois. Joliet police officers responded to the scene around 7:46 p.m. on Cass Street near Youngs Avenue for a report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. A preliminary investigation of the crash determined that a 56-year-old man was in the 500 block of Cass Street on the south side of the street when he attempted to cross to the north side of the roadway. At that time, he was hit by a Kia Forte driven by a 29-year-old male of Elwood, which was westbound in the curb lane. The Joliet Fire Department took the pedestrian to St Joseph Medical Center in critical condition. His condition has stabilized. The driver of the Kia was uninjured. There is no crosswalk where the crash happened, according to police. The roadway was closed as traffic crash investigators reconstructed the crash scene. The crash remains under investigation. The boy was driving a REX110 ATV on the sidewalk on Mission Boulevard in Joliet on Friday, March 15 when he 'lost control and struck a tree,' causing him to be 'ejected from the vehicle,' according to a news release shared by the Joliet Police Department. Police Chief Bill Evans said the child was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, 'where he was unfortunately later pronounced deceased.' Family identified the child as Jason Alvarado, who was visiting his father in Illinois for spring break when the incident occurred, according to CW affiliate WGN-TV. An 8-year-old boy who was a passenger on the ATV was not injured, according to Evans. The ATV involved in the crash was designed for children and could go up to 20 mph, he said, according to the reports, noting, 'I wouldn't advise just putting a youngster on it.'
