Roston Chase Named West Indies Test Captain Ahead Of New WTC Cycle

Published By : IANS Last Updated: Roston Chase is the new West Indies Test captain for the June series against Australia, with Jomel Warrican as vice-captain, following Cricket West Indies' selection process. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named Roston Chase as West Indies Test captain for the upcoming home series against Australia in June, with Jomel Warrican named as vice-captain. The series will be the first of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle for both teams. 'The appointments were unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors during its meeting held today, May 16, 2025," CWI said in a statement. 'This announcement follows the completion of a groundbreaking, robust and structured process to evaluate and recommend the next captain and vice-captain of the West Indies Test team. 'Recognizing the critical role of leadership in shaping team culture, driving performance, and ensuring long-term success, CWI adopted a data-informed, multi-dimensional framework to guide the selection. This marks a significant evolution in how leadership appointments are made, aimed at strengthening accountability, transparency, and alignment with modern cricketing standards," it added. The 33-year-old, who last played a Test match over two years ago, will replace Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down from the role in March this year. The process began with a shortlist of candidates selected based on factors including Test experience, leadership qualities, and captaincy credentials. The shortlisted players included: John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican, the CWI said. Chase has featured in 49 Test matches, amassing 2,265 runs at an average of 26.33, with five centuries to his name. With the ball, he has taken 85 wickets, including standout figures of 8 for 60 against England in Bridgetown in 2019. Shai Hope, the current ODI and T20I captain, respectfully declined consideration to focus on his existing leadership roles, the Caribbean board said. Head coach Daren Sammy also expressed his strong support for the new captain. 'I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him – we're building something special," he said. The shortlisted candidates were evaluated on several key factors, including Test experience, leadership qualities and prior captaincy credentials. They then underwent a detailed assessment process that featured psychometric testing to gauge leadership style, behaviour and overall fit for the role. This was followed by structured interviews that focused on tactical approach, communication skills and alignment with team culture. At the conclusion of the selection process, Roston Chase was appointed captain, with Jomel Warrican named his deputy. Shai Hope, who currently leads the West Indies in ODIs and T20Is, opted out of the running for the Test captaincy, preferring to focus on his responsibilities in the shorter formats Chase, who brings experience from 49 Tests and 86 limited-overs internationals, takes over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down from the role in March 2025.

West Indies' Jomel Warrican wins ICC Men's Player of the Month for January

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has been named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for January 2025 following a standout performance in Pakistan, where he played a key role in securing West Indies' first Test victory in the country in 35 years. Warrican's performances on Pakistan's turning tracks were instrumental in West Indies' success. In the first Test in Multan, he registered career-best figures of 10/101 and contributed an unbeaten 31*, but Pakistan, led by Sajid Khan's 9/115, secured a 127-run win. In the second Test, Warrican's unbeaten 36 at No.11 helped West Indies recover from 95/9 to 163. He then took four wickets in the first innings, setting up a competitive contest. In the final innings, he delivered the match-winning spell, taking 5/27 as Pakistan were bowled out, sealing a 120-run win for West Indies—their first Test victory in Pakistan since 1990. Warrican finished the series with 19 wickets at an average of nine and 85 runs at 42.50, earning him the Player of the Series award. 'This award is an honour," Warrican said. "One of my goals was to take my first Test five-for, but I never imagined it would be this grand. Multan now holds a special place in my heart, not only for the historic win but for earning this recognition." This is the first time the 32-year-old has won the Player of the Month award and only the third time a West Indies player has received the honour, following Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie in 2024.

Warrican and Mooney crowned ICC Players of the Month for January

· West Indian spinner Jomel Warrican wins his first Men's Player of the Month award after impressive wicket-taking feats in Pakistan · Beth Mooney claims Women's Player of the Month prize after starring role in Australia's dominant Ashes success · More about the ICC Player of the Month awards is available here . The International Cricket Council (ICC) has today revealed the ICC Men's and Women's Players of the Month for January 2025 as the West Indies' Jomel Warrican and Australia's Beth Mooney. Left-arm spinner Warrican inspired the islanders to their first Test win in Pakistan since 1990, while Mooney was at her scintillating best as Australia convincingly brushed aside England in the Ashes. Both players were crowned following a vote conducted among global fans registered at and a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media representatives. Warrican wins his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award from two other standout spinners from January's contests, Pakistan's Noman Ali and India's Varun Chakravarthy. The 32-year-old's exceptional month saw him take 19 wickets in two Test matches at an average of just 9.00. Despite Pakistan winning the opening encounter, ten wickets fell to the left-armer in spin-friendly conditions in Multan. Figures of three for 69 in the first innings preceded a career-best spell of seven for 32 in the second, where, with the addition of two runouts, Warrican played a part in all but one of Pakistan's wickets to fall. His brilliance continued in the second Test, not only with the ball but also with bat in hand. Arriving at the crease with scores at 95 for nine in the first innings, Warrican (36 not out) and Kemar Roach foiled the Pakistan onslaught and propelled the tourists to a respectable 163 all out. Contributions of four for 43 and five for 27 came either side of 18 more valuable runs in the second innings, and the spinner's all-round heroics heralded an historic 120-run victory alongside a richly deserved Player of the Series accolade. Warrican becomes the first West Indian to win the award since fellow spinner Gudakesh Motie back in May 2024. ICC Men's Player of the Month for January, Jomel Warrican, said: 'It's an honour to win this award. One of my goals for this year was my first five-for in Test cricket, but I did not think that it would be this grand! 'I see this as one small step in my cricketing career, and I look forward to many more. I promised my captain something special in this series, especially when my father, my biggest supporter, predicted a phenomenal performance for me. 'Multan has a special place in my heart: not only because of the historic win for the West Indies, beating Pakistan away from home, but also by earning this prestigious award.' As Australia stormed to Ashes victory over England, ICC Women's Player of the Month, Beth Mooney exhibited trademark firepower in statement performances across ODI and T20I encounters. A subdued start to the series was overturned when the opener dug deep with a battling half-century in the third ODI in Hobart. Stuttering to 59 for four, Mooney resisted a resurgent England with 50 from 64 balls, setting the platform for the home side to post 308 from their 50 overs and secure the ODI sweep. In the T20I contests that followed, Mooney consolidated her position as the top-ranked batter, striking 213 runs at a blistering strike rate of 146.89. Scores of 75 and 44 came before a stunning unbeaten 94 in 63 balls in Adelaide – her highest score in over five years in the format to drive home Australia's dominance against their fierce rivals. Mooney overcomes the West Indies' Karishma Ramharack and U19 Women's T20 World Cup winner Gongadi Trisha to seal the win, and ensures a second successive win for an Australian player after Annabel Sutherland was honoured in December. ICC Women's Player of the Month for January, Beth Mooney: 'It's an honour to be named the ICC Women's Player of the Month and I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me. 'January was an incredible month for the Australian Women's Cricket Team. Winning the Ashes in front of a home crowd was very special and to complete the series playing in the first ever day-night Test at the MCG in front of a record crowd for a Women's Test is a moment that we will all never forget.' 'This team continues to achieve amazing results, and I am so proud to be a part of it.' Noman Ali among nominees for ICC award

The nominees for the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for January 2025 have been revealed, with three spinners showing stellar performances during the month. Jomel Warrican, Noman Ali, and Varun Chakravarthy will compete for the prestigious award. Noman Ali (Pakistan): Pakistan's Noman Ali continued his superb form, being their primary strike bowler in the series against the West Indies. He took six wickets in the first Test, conceding just 81 runs. However, it was in the second Test where Noman truly shone. Noman became the first-ever Pakistan spinner to claim a Test hat-trick, taking six wickets in the first innings of the second Test. He followed that up with another four-wicket performance in the second innings, finishing with remarkable match figures of 10/121. In total, Noman Ali took 16 wickets at an average of 12.62 and scored 15 runs in January, making him one of the top performers for the month. Jomel Warrican (West Indies): Jomel Warrican put up a career-best performance in Pakistan, helping the West Indies draw the Test series against the hosts. On the spin-friendly pitches of Multan, Warrican caused major problems for Pakistan's batters. In the first Test, he delivered impressive bowling figures of 10/101 and added an unbeaten 31 with the bat, although the West Indies lost by 127 runs. However, Warrican bounced back strongly in the second Test, taking four wickets in the first innings and followed it up with a brilliant five-wicket haul in the second innings, bringing his match figures to 9/70. His all-round efforts helped the West Indies secure a win in the second Test, ensuring the series ended in a draw. Warrican finished January with 85 runs at an average of 42.50 and 9 wickets at an average of 9, earning him the Player of the Series award. Varun Chakravarthy (India): Varun Chakravarthy continued his brilliant form after returning to India's national team in October 2024. In January, he was in exceptional form, featuring in four T20I matches against England at home. Chakravarthy showed his skill from the start, as English batters struggled to pick his spin. In the first T20I at Eden Gardens, he impressed with figures of 3/23 and earned the Player of the Match award. In Chennai, although he gave away 38 runs, Chakravarthy picked up the key wickets of Harry Brook and Jamie Overton. However, his standout performance came in Rajkot, where he spun through the English lineup to claim 5 wickets for just 24 runs. He followed that up with two more wickets in the fourth T20I in Pune. Chakravarthy ended January with 12 wickets at an impressive average of 9.41 and an economy rate of 7.01, further cementing his place as one of the best bowlers in the shortest format. Shoaib Akhtar predicts CT semi-finalists Former test cricketer and fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has made his prediction for the semi-finalists of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. "I believe Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan will reach the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy." "If Afghanistan's team shows maturity during the event, they could make it to the semi-finals," Shoaib said during a talk with the media in Dubai. Shoaib Akhtar also expressed confidence in Pakistan's upcoming match against India, saying, "I'm hopeful that Pakistan will defeat India on February 23. In fact, I believe that both Pakistan and India should also meet in the final of the tournament." Shoaib concluded by congratulating the PCB on the upgrade of the Gaddafi Stadium and the National Stadium and urged fans to support the Pakistan team, saying, "Now, let's not question the team's selection anymore."
