Indie rockers the Mekons are ready to take their music ‘where we want'
'Horror,' the Mekons' 25th album, opens with 'The Western Design,' whose reggae rhythm winks at the song's subject: how Britain conquered Jamaica and made it 'a slave-operated imperial profit generator.' That's an unusually caustic topic for most indie-rock bands, but not for the Mekons.
Singer-guitarists Jon Langford and Tom Greenhalgh met as students in Leeds University's art department, then headed by T.J. Clark. He had been a member of the Situationist International, a French group that melded revolutionary politics and experimental art.
