US Marshals arrest man accused of opening fire at Akron police during traffic stop

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – A man accused of opening fire at Akron police officers during a traffic stop has been arrested, the police department confirmed.
The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force found and arrested 30-year-old Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson, of Akron, on Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting occurred during a traffic stop in West Akron around 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday.
As FOX 8 previously reported, two Akron police officers pulled over a silver Ford F-150 XLT in the area of Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street for traffic violations.

According to Akron police, when the officers approached the vehicle, the suspect opened fire through the truck window. An Akron police officer returned fire, but the suspect sped away.
A statewide alert was issued for the suspect and the rental vehicle on Tuesday.
In Wednesday evening's update, Akron police said Nelson was taken into custody without incident.
'This arrest sends a clear message that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated,' Akron Police Chief Brian Harding said in the release. 'The Akron Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our officers and our community and will continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to those who threaten it. We are grateful to the U.S. Marshals Service for their swift and effective action and to all the officers, detectives and agencies who assisted in this investigation.'
When will Cedar-Lee development be demolished?
Nelson faces multiple charges in the shooting, including felonious assault on a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and failure to comply.
'I'm thankful an arrest has been made so quickly in this case, and I applaud the work of our officers and detectives, as well as our partner organizations including the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. It is critical that those involved in violence are held accountable for their dangerous actions,' Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said.
The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave, following department procedure in police-involved shootings. The Office of Professional Standards and Accountability is investigating.
