Loved I Know What You Did Last Summer? 8 Iconic '90s Slasher Films To Watch Next

If there's one thing that's for certain when it comes to slasher movies, it's that nostalgia and a good scare make for a pretty thrilling combo. The cult '90s franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer has been revived for a new generation with the 2025 sequel of the very same name out in cinemas this month. Starring a new cohort of hopeful scream queens (and kings) in Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Sarah Pidgeon, the fresh instalment follows a group of friends being stalked by a masked killer in the seaside town of Southport after they vow to keep silent about a fatal car accident they caused. If the new movie has left you craving more of the bloody, screaming delights of the slasher franchise, here are the movies you should be watching next… I Know What You Did Last Summer We're talking about the original, of course. Fans of the 1997 film will know that this cult classic pretty much mirrors the new movie, revolving around a group of friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer after covering up a car accident. With a cast that includes '90s staples like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr., the vibes are absolutely on point throughout. Plus, it features the totally iconic 'what are you waiting for?' line. It was followed by two sequels called I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Scream Widely credited as one of the best slasher films of all time – also kicking off a whole franchise of its own – the Wes Craven classic follows a group of high school students who become the target of a serial killer known as Ghostface. It stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Rose McGowan and Drew Barrymore. If you haven't watched them in the original, you've most likely seen the parodies in Scary Movie. It's creepy, strangely cosy, and of course, very bloody. Perfect viewing for movie night! Candyman If you ever stared into a mirror during a sleepover while uttering the word Candyman five times in an attempt to conjure up a killer, this is the movie that originated from. The supernatural horror follows a graduate student writing a thesis on urban legends, leading her to discover Candyman, a (yes, another) hook-handed ghost who was the son of a slave. It's often credited for bringing thoughtful new layers to a well-trodden sub-genre, integrating social commentary about race and class. Maybe you caught the 2021 spiritual sequel of the same name produced by Jordan Peele. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later With the original 1978 horror classic massively popularising the slasher genre, it was only right the movie was honoured with another sequel 20 years later. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode, who has faked her own death to go into hiding from the murderous Michael Myers, only for him to find her all over again. Though it's the seventh instalment in the franchise, it serves as a direct sequel to Halloween and Halloween II, and features Michelle Williams, Janet Leigh (Jamie's own mother, of Psycho fame), Josh Hartnett, LL Cool J and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Cherry Falls Brittany Murphy stars in this 1999 movie set in the titular small Virginia town where a serial killer targets teen virgins. Like all great slashers, it manages to strike a balance between the bonkers, the scary and the gory. Did we mention there's a scene where the high school students try to evade murder by organising a mass orgy? Yeah… Wes Craven's New Nightmare The '90s was a fertile time for horror revivals, and fans loved this return to the waking nightmare of Freddy Krueger in 1994, who was first introduced in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street. This movie came with a bit of a meta twist though, because instead of being portrayed as a villain who haunts nightmares, Freddy actually invaded the real world to target the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him. As the trailer puts it, 'terror no longer stops at the screen…' Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 If you're anything like me, this 1974 horror classic is probably still giving you nightmares. The 1990 sequel is the third instalment in the franchise and follows Leatherface and his cannibalistic family who stalk numerous victims in the backroads of Texas. You can expect more of the spine-chilling horrors of the first film with a few updated touches for a new decade (including Lord Of The Rings star Viggo Mortensen). Urban Legend This 1998 horror revolves around a college student who suspects that a series of freak deaths could be connected to urban legends. You might recognise a few faces in the cast including Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart and Tara Reid. Some critics felt it was a bit of a rip off of Scream, while others appreciate that it was clearly influenced by the movie. So, make of that what you will. Related... Loved The New Superman? 'I Know What You Did Last Summer': Madelyn Cline looked to Sarah Michelle Gellar as her 'blueprint'

Sarah Michelle Gellar was a fan favourite in 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer, and now she's passing the baton to Madelyn Cline in the new remake. While Cline's character Danica Richards isn't exactly like Helen Shivers, there are a lot of similarities to the original Croaker Queen. "You can pinpoint the cast members who were paying tribute to the original characters, the outline was all there," Cline told Yahoo Canada. "We filled the rest in with our own ideas and little specificities." In the 2025 I Know What You Did Last Summer film (now in theatres), we first meet Danica at her engagement party in her hometown of Southport, North Carolina, as she's set to marry her rich, socialite fiancé Teddy (Tyriq Withers), attended by her best friend Ava (Chase Sui Wonders), and Ava's ex Milo (Jonah Hauer-King). Taking a late night drive after the party, along with their former friend Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon), they accidentally contribute to a driver swerving, and driving off a cliff. A year later Ava returns to Southport for Danica's bridal shower, ahead of her planned wedding to her new fiancé, Wyatt (Joshua Orpin), after things didn't work out with Teddy. It's at that event that Danica opens a card that reads, "I know what you did last summer." Understandably freaked out, that's the beginning of the bloody and fatal events that impact this group of friends, while they try to find out who's out to get are many connections between the new characters in I Know What You Did Last Summer and the characters from the 1997 film. Primarily, Ava reaches out to Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie James to get her help to try to stop the murderer who's targeting her and her friends. And while Helen's death by the Fisherman is one of the most iconic horror scenes, that doesn't mean Gellar didn't make an appearance in the new film. As Danica faces anxiety, grief and fear, she has a dream where she's just escaped death and ends up in an auditorium, seeing a blonde woman on the stage. It's Helen, in her full beauty queen look. There's a sassy exchange with Helen happy to poke fun at Danica, both the similarities and differences between them, when Helen's body starts to transform into a corpse. Cline herself actually loved watching that scene back, "glued to the screen" watching Gellar's cameo, while also sharing that both Gellar and her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., shared a lot about their experiences on the original film. "She's our original Croaker Queen, she is Danica's blueprint," Cline said. "She had many, many conversations about her experience on the original, and stories that she and Freddie shared." "The best way you can bring something back is to have the original people, their essence also involved, because ... they walked so we can run. They're the reason why we're here." 'I was just having the time of my life' But as Cline stepped into several Scream Queen elements for I Know What You Did Last Summer, she wasn't incredibly confident in her ability to play out some of the near death moments. "Sometimes I'm like, ... is this corny? Am I doing this right?" Cline admitted. "Where's the manual, where's the guidebook? ... What do I do with my voice? What do I do with my hands?" What Cline felt more comfortable with is the outrageously silly dialogue she had as Danica. "I just remember from from day one with Danica, I was just having the time of my life with her," Cline said. "She's so fun and quirky and lovable, and that's the thing about her, she has these quirks [and you] love her for it." "She is serious and that is what makes me love her so much, ... she's just a deeply earnest person. ... She was already written so funny and I was just happy that they trusted me to go in there and give whatever my little sprinkle was." The door for another 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' movie is open While we won't reveal who the killer is in I Know What You Did Last Summer, we'll spoil that, unlike Helen, Danica makes it out alive. And just like the original film had the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, a mid-credits scene between Julie and Brandy Norwood, who played Karla Wilson, teases that there could be more in store for this story. So where could Danica go in the future? Cline has some ideas. "I think Danica, [she'll] definitely start drinking," Cline said. "She's definitely a Cosmopolitan girl. I think she graduates from Shirley Temples to Cosmos. "I think Danica would be in like a revenge arc of sorts. But ... I think she's too soft. I think she would find some way to get revenge, but at the same time, I think she would be like, 'F—k that.' I think she would maybe pull a Julie and just move away, and maybe try to find another fiancé that's rich."

With the opening weekend of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Jonah Hauer-King is entering his 'scream king' era. At Monday's world premiere of the slasher requel, in which he plays Milo Griffin, the actor told Deadline that he's next beginning production in Prague on writer/director Anna Biller's third feature The Face of Horror, her followup to 2016's The Love Witch. Yeah, I shoot that this summer,' he told me. 'I play this really villainous, horrible knight, who really has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, which is kinda fun.' Hauer-King added, 'I've been getting to know her over the last year or so, and she's got such an amazing, creative mind and brain—again, people say this a lot—but has genuine individual vision. If you've seen The Love Witch, you know. She has such a particular visual style and type of storytelling.' Noting that cinematographer M. David Mullen will shoot the film on 35mm, the actor raved, 'It's the first time I've done that, so I'm very excited.' Jonah Hauer-King at Monday's 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' premiere in DTLA, sharing an update on Anna Biller's 'The Face of Horror' — Deadline (@DEADLINE) July 15, 2025 Last month, Deadline reported that Hauer-King was cast in The Face of Horror alongside Kristine Froseth, Ellie Bamber, Leo Suter and Bella Heathcote. Ben Radcliffe has also since joined the cast. Set in 14th Century England and loosely inspired by the Japanese ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan, the supernatural thriller sees Hauer-King as a knight called Edward Carnifex who marries his longtime love Eleanor (Froseth), only to get bored of her and instead court a wealthy noblewoman (Heathcote). It is only a matter of time before Eleanor will be forced to take a bloody revenge. Bamber plays Eleanor's sister Beatrice, and Suter plays Edward's squire and Beatrice's suitor Richard. Doctor Who: Wish World – season two episode seven recap

In a season full of stories about stories and littered with fourth-wall breaks, this was a Doctor Who episode distilled into a fairytale, with Archie Panjabi delighting in playing up the wicked Rani caricature and Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor reduced to a passive, then persecuted, bystander. It was odd seeing the Doctor and Belinda (Varada Sethu) as a contented married couple, WandaVision style, enjoying the kind of boring day-to-day existence that Matt Smith's Doctor showed in The Power of Three is impossible for him to live, without getting restless. Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) appeared to be holding the world together and taunting our heroes with his mock CBeebies Bedtime Stories show, but it looked to be taking it out of him. Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood/'a' Rani was good value as ever. Was that a hint of conflict on her face about the whole plan when she was comforting Conrad? Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday continued to prove that she is better suited to leading this show through episodes where the Doctor isn't really being the Doctor than being on board the Tardis itself, although her introduction to the underworld of ignored and dispossessed people with disabilities did slow the pace of the episode. Then there were Jonathan Groff, Ruth Madeley and Bonnie Langford in the mix too. And a run-through of previous Doctor's faces that sidestepped where exactly Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor fits in by slotting her in between 13 and 14, where we know she definitely doesn't belong. The Giggle reared its head, too, this time creepily voiced by the stolen baby. It has been a continued presence this year. Mr Ring-a-Ding did the Stooky Bill giggle, and its waveform appeared about the Harmony arena last week. What can it all mean? What if Doctor Who did WandaVision, but with added giant bone dinosaurs? This was more about life aboard the redressed Unit set, which also housed much of the action in last year's two-part finale. It was reassuring to see that in whatever timeline we are in Col Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient) has the hots for his boss, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave). We will see more of that pair in forthcoming spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea. Much as he did in 2008's Turn Left and in his drama Years and Years, Russell T Davies explored here a vision of contemporary Britain that had turned more authoritarian. The script may have focused on 'doubt' being the thought crimes committed, but it was clear that Davies was drawing parallels with regimes where you can be dragged out of your home and disappeared for being gay, for being political, for being different, for your family being suspicious of you. It was more chilling than any of the science fiction in the episode, and a timely warning. It is hard to know where to begin. Everything was a mystery, in an episode that was nearly all set-up and no payoff. We don't know what the bone monsters are. We don't know where Belinda has disappeared to. We don't know why Poppy is there. More than anything, we don't know why they billed this era as a soft reboot where people could jump on with the aim of attracting a new younger audience, and then crammed it full of things that first appeared in episodes in the 1970s and 80s and have barely been referenced since. Baffling. Fun at times, but baffling. We first encountered the Doctor's alias of John Smith in Patrick Troughton's 1968 adventure The Wheel in Space. Omega, a Gallifreyan solar engineer, made his debut in the 10th anniversary romp The Three Doctors, and cropped up again 10 years later during the Peter Davison era in 1983's Arc of Infinity. The Gallifreyan Seal, sometimes known as the Seal of Rassilon, first appeared on Gallifrey during 1976 Tom Baker story The Deadly Assassin. However, the prop was recycled by designer Roger Murray-Leach, having previously been seen in 1975's Revenge of the Cybermen as an emblem of the Vogans. They are not to be confused with the Vogons and their terrible poetry in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Turning people into animals may be a fairytale trope, but the first transformation Frau Rani caused in Bavaria, turning the mother into violets, echoed her tactics in 1985's The Mark of the Rani. Kate O'Mara's incarnation of the Time Lady had landmines that turned people into trees when they stood on them. Dugga Doo, from last week's Interstellar Song Contest, has become such a cult hit that the BBC has produced a full-length version of the song without the dialogue over the top of it, and on Wednesday launched a 24/7 YouTube livestream with the earworm on a constant loop. It's the season finale. The BBC has said there will be no previews for journalists, and no early morning iPlayer drop, so everybody gets to watch The Reality War at exactly the same time on BBC One, iPlayer, Disney+ internationally, and in cinemas in the UK.
