Blue Jays humiliated as host Rays roll to three-game sweep in Tampa

Article content The Jays might be longing for the days when their depth behind the plate was amongst the best in baseball, a stable of catchers featuring Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk and Gabriel Moreno. Article content Moreno was traded to Arizona, while Jansen's road out of Toronto has landed the veteran in Tampa following a pit stop in Boston. Article content Kirk has been fine, but he can't catch every day and certainly not on a stifling day game following a night game. Article content When Tyler Heineman took two foul tips flush off his mask last Thursday against the San Diego Padres, one knew some kind of residual effect would be felt. Article content Perhaps to the surprise of no one, the Jays placed Heineman on the seven-day concussion injured list before Sunday's first pitch. Article content The Jays started Ali Sanchez, who was called up, while lefty pitcher Josh Walker was designated for assignment. Article content Article content 3. Clase closed Article content If you recall, the piece the Jays received when they shipped reliever Yimi Garcia to Seattle at last year's trade deadline was Jonatan Clase. Article content Clase isn't an everyday player, at least for now, but he has shown flashes of evolving into one. He can put the ball in play, is more than capable of stealing bases and isn't a bad outfielder. Article content With any youthful player, so much resides between the ears. Article content There's no better teacher than experience and the hope is Clase learns from an unconventional route he took in left field. The hope is he learns from getting picked off at first base after reaching base on a single. Article content Given the brutality of Sunday, the hope is the Jays quickly forget what happened the last three games, which came after the Jays swept San Diego to complete a 5-4 homestand. Article content The Blue Jays will play the host Texas Rangers on the U.S. Memorial Day holiday in what is shaping up as a pitchers' duel with Kevin Gausman facing Jacob DeGrom; in his most recent outing, Gausman went seven scoreless innings in a masterful performance against the Padres; Gausman (4-4, 4.03 ERA) will be making his 11th start of the season Monday; first pitch is scheduled at 4:05 p.m. with the following two games of the three-game series to begin at 8:05 p.m. in Arlington, Texas. Lauer had allowed one home run in 12 innings previously this season. He gave up three runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Toronto entered following a three-game sweep of San Diego by a combined score of 24-6. The game drew 10,046, the Rays' 30th sellout in 32 games at Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home for this season. Advertisement Key Moment After Montgomery walked the bases loaded in the seventh, Rodríguez got Jonatan Clase to ground into a run-scoring double play, then retired Nathan Lukes on a flyout. Key Stat Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Daulton Varsho, the top three hitters in Toronto's batting order, went 0 for 11 with a walk. Up Next Rays RHP Shane Baz (3-3, 5.33 ERA) and Blue Jays RHP José Berrios (1-1, 4.19 ERA) start Saturday. ___ AP MLB:

Blue Jays' offence reverts to its inoffensive ways in loss to host Tampa Bay Rays

The Blue Jays were a hit during a 5-4 homestand on the strength of their ability to hit homers or produce in clutch moments. Article content Article content Coming off a series sweep of the San Diego Padres, one would think momentum was on the Jays' side as they began a three-game set Friday night against the host Tampa Bay Rays. Article content No timely hits would be summoned on a night featuring so few hits by the visitors, the Jays drew eight walks and yet they managed to push across only one run. Article content Both teams played well defensively. Article content Offensively, Tampa needed two swings to produce its three runs. Article content The following are three takeaways in the wake of a Jays' 3-1 loss to an AL East rival that dropped Toronto's record to 25-25, while Tampa improved to 24-26. Article content 1. BOTTOMS UP Article content One of the most understated areas involves the team's bottom of the order, a collection of utility players who have, to their credit, stepped up in big moments. Article content Nathan Lukes immediately comes to mind. Article content The fact he even reached base speaks to how well Lukes has been swinging the bat. Article content The fact he was thrown out highlighted a recurring team deficiency. Article content Of the Jays' four hits, three came from the team's bottom of the order, which consisted of Ernie Clement, Jonatan Clase, who had a double, and Lukes. Article content Following three straight walks in the seventh inning, Clase hit into a double play as the Jays finally scored. Article content Article content 2. LAUER POWER Article content Article content When seven relievers are used in an 11-inning game, the next day's starter is asked to provide some degree of length. Article content Eric Lauer's task was pretty simple, but pitching in the big leagues, even when the backdrop is a minor-league ballpark, is replete with complications.
