Yankees Send 3-Word Message After Exciting News Before Mets Game

The Subway Series has always been a centerpiece of New York sports lore, but it got extra flavor after Juan Soto left the New York Yankees for the New York Mets this past offseason. The four-time All-Star rejected the Yankees' 16-year, $750 million contract offer and signed with the Mets on a record-breaking $15-year, $765 million deal. The Yankees acquired Soto from the San Diego Padres in December 2023 with just one year left on his rookie deal. The five-time Silver Slugger formed a dynamic duo with Aaron Judge, as the two combined for 99 homers and 253 RBI. The latter star struggled in the postseason, but Soto and Giancarlo Stanton combined for 11 homers and 25 RBI. The team made the World Series for the first time since 2009, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Advertisement Friday will mark Soto's first return to Yankee Stadium since leaving the "Bronx Bombers." However, there is another subplot to the contest. New York Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images The Yankees reinstated relief pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga from the 15-day IL and posted a message about it on their social media. "Welcome back, Loáisiga," they said. Loáisiga only pitched four innings last season before tearing the UCL in his right elbow. Additionally, the right-hander only pitched 17 games the year before due to a bone spur in the same elbow. Loáisiga has been in the Yankees organization since 2016 and made his MLB debut in '18. The 30-year-old owns a career 19-11 record with a 3.44 ERA, 36 holds, and seven saves out of 16 opportunities. Try it free The Yankees have accelerated the timeline for Jonathan Loáisiga, who is back ahead of schedule. The righty is no longer rehabbing, activated from the injured list before Friday's Subway Series opener in The Bronx. The original plan had called for Loáisiga to throw on consecutive days in the minors this weekend, but the Yankees apparently felt he was ready. The corresponding roster move was significant: The Yankees have designated Tyler Matzek for assignment, perhaps the end of a brief tenure after the veteran lefty so impressed in camp. Loáisiga will be on a major league mound for the first time since April 3 of last year, after which he required elbow surgery that cost him about 13 months. Jonathan Loáisiga was activated from the injured list on Friday. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post The high-octane bullpen arm looked strong in six rehab games, allowing one run in 7 ⅓ innings while striking out nine. He can be used for length, having tossed two innings in one game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If Matzek is lost on waivers or through a trade, he would have lasted just seven games in pinstripes. Tyler Matzek was designated for assignment on Friday. AP The seven-year major leaguer allowed three runs in 6 ⅓ innings, his largest issue the five walks he had issued.

Right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga returns to Yankees, less than 13 months after Tommy John surgery

NEW YORK (AP) — Right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga was activated from the 15-day injured list by the New York Yankees on Friday, less than 13 months after Tommy John surgery. The Yankees designated left-hander Tyler Matzek for assignment ahead of the Subway Series opener against the Mets. A 30-year-old reliever, Loáisiga had a 1.23 ERA in six minor league rehab appearances from April 26 through Tuesday, striking out seven and walking none in 3 1/3 innings. He made three relief appearances during the first seven days of the 2024 season, then went on the injured list because of a strained right flexor muscle, then had Tommy John surgery with team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on May 1. Loáisiga was limited to 17 games in 2023 by right elbow inflammation that sidelined him from the Yankees between April 5 and Aug. 8. He is 19-11 with a 3.44 ERA in 11 starts and 152 relief appearances over seven seasons, striking out 207 and walking 72 in 219 2/3 innings. New York also activated right-hander Clayton Beeter from the 15-day IL after he recovered from right shoulder impingement and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees Announce Major Bullpen News Before Padres Game

Veteran New York Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga is on the verge of finally wearing the pinstripes again. The Yankees announced Wednesday that the 30-year-old Loáisiga will shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Loáisiga, who began pitching at Single-A Tampa last month, struck out seven and allowed one run over 3.1 innings with the Tarpons. Advertisement Loáisiga, a mainstay on the Yankees' staff since his 2018 debut, is recovering from elbow surgery that limited him to four scoreless innings a year ago. He owns a 3.44 ERA and 207-72 K-BB ratio across 219.2 career innings. Loáisiga's impending return is excellent news for a Yankees team still craving reliable late-inning arms. Former All-Star closer Devin Williams blew his latest lead in Monday's collapse against the San Diego Padres, giving him a 10.03 ERA and an unseemly 13-10 K-BB ratio over 11.2 innings. New York Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Williams has posted -0.9 bWAR thus far, tied with Kansas City Royals reliever Sam Long and Texas Rangers rookie Kumar Rocker for the sixth-worst among any pitcher leaguewide. Only Baltimore Orioles starter Charlie Morton (-1.2 bWAR) ranks worse in the American League. Advertisement The Yankees are without starters Luis Gil (lat) and Marcus Stroman (knee), who remain out indefinitely. Ace Gerrit Cole already underwent season-ending elbow surgery, and the Yankees designated Carlos Carrasco (2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight games and six starts) for assignment earlier this week. However, you likely won't see Loáisiga join the rotation. He's been a full-time reliever since 2021 and typically pitches an inning per outing.
