Charity 5-a-side football match raises money for Cumbrian suicide charity

A charity football match raised money for a mental health charity in memory of a Kendal man who took his own life. The five-a-side over 35s tournament was organised by Matt Brooks in memory of his friend Jonathan Mason who died in 2022, aged 39. Advertisement This year's tournament saw ten teams sign up to take part and raise money for Every Life Matters, a charity based in Shap providing suicide bereavement support across Cumbria. Mr Brooks said: "When Jonny died it was such a shocking scenario because nobody expected it. He was the life and soul of the party. "Running these football matches has been a way for us to pull together and remember him, but it's also given us all an opportunity to stop and think, and be more aware of our mental health.' Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK with death rates in Cumbria higher than the national average. 'You are lucky you did not kill him': Cork man jailed for unprovoked attack on vulnerable man, 66

A violent attack on a vulnerable 66-year-old man in the middle of the day at Great William O'Brien Street in Cork City resulted in the culprit being jailed for three years on Friday. 40-year-old Jonathan Mason of Farranferris Park, Farranree, Cork, pleaded guilty to carrying out the assault causing harm on a 66-year-old man at noon on Thursday, January 16. Detective Garda Kevin Motherway said Jonathan Mason knew the injured party and where he lived and effectively stalked his victim, followed him and seriously assaulted him. He said the injured party did not know why he was targeted. At an earlier court hearing in the same case, the accused said: 'I am not a violent person. I stays in my nanny's or in my partner's in Charleville. I am clean of drugs. I'm on Suboxone. "I pass that way (where the crime was committed) every day to collect my tablet next door to Watercourse Road garda station. My dad is the same age (as the injured party). I wouldn't like that to happen to my dad.' Defence barrister, Mahon Corkery, said of the accused: 'He has had quite a chaotic lifestyle. He has a long history of severe addiction to diamorphine and has had extended periods of homelessness. He is deeply remorseful for this.' Mr Corkery said the accused instructed him that another person claimed to him that the injured party carried out an offence against that person. However, Det. Garda Motherway said this was the first he had heard of this, there was no evidence of it and no complaint was ever made of it. Judge Boyle said: 'This was a completely unprovoked assault in broad daylight. From the photographs in the book of evidence the injured party is a slight looking, frail man. You watched him in the shop, you followed him. You struck him in the head and he fell to the ground striking his head. You are lucky you did not kill him or cause him a serious brain injury. "You are lucky and he is lucky. He suffered multiple displaced fractures of his facial bones in and around his eye socket. 'Whatever you thought you were doing there was no excuse for it. And I note that you are apologising to him.' The judge imposed a sentence of three years and four months, with the last four months suspended. The sentence was backdated to January 23 when the accused went into custody. Read More Cork man to await CCTV footage before deciding plea for alleged assault of man in his 60s

Kentucky man accused of using raccoon to get back at bar owner

A Kentucky man faces charges for allegedly releasing a raccoon inside a crowded after bar after being being denied entry into the watering hole. The Murray Police Department said on social media that they received a call on the evening of June 6 that an individual had intentionally released a raccoon into an open business. Police said the person had left the scene but was later found driving his vehicle and pulled over by officers. According to police, the man refused to roll down his windows or step outside the vehicle. Cops said they s had to forcefully remove him from the vehicle. Officers soon learned that the man had allegedly released a raccoon into the business and the animal bit a person. It was apparently in response to being told he was not allowed on the property. Jonathan Mason, 40, was arrested and charged with assault, criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, and failure of owner to maintain required insurance. A bartender at The Big Apple Grill and Bar said she was working the night of the incident. 'Apparently he had trapped a raccoon earlier in the day on his farm and he had been carrying it around with him,' Mary Hafner told the New York Post. 'I'm a bartender, so you know I've seen some crazy stuff in my time. But nothing like this.' Employees said locals refer to the man as 'Cowboy Cody' as he lives alone on a farm and has caused trouble in the past. According to Hafner, the man was banned from the establishment late last year following an incident involving a mule. The accused man was arrested last December for leading cops on a high-speed drunken mule chase.
