Thousands of gallons of sewage, storm water enter Tybee Island creek
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — The City of Tybee announced around 24,000 gallons of sewage and storm water have entered Horse Pen Creek on the South Beach back river from heavy rains Saturday.
The city said it is taking immediate steps to address the situation and is monitoring conditions to ensure public health and environmental safety.
The spill occurred from sanitary sewer manholes on 8th Street and 807 Jones Avenue after over five inches of rainwater saturated the ground.
'This water infiltrated our closed sanitary sewer system, likely through cracks and slipped joints on the south end,' the city said on a Sunday statement. 'This overwhelmed the lines, pushing through the path of least resistance—our manholes.'
