Very thankful for my coaches in trusting me because I knew I didn't. My ponytail was challenge -- she hit me," Ionescu said when asked by Bleacher Report's Jackie Powell. Liberty win by 2nd-largest margin in WNBA history with 100-52 win over Sun
The New York Liberty nearly set two WNBA records in their 100-52 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. With a 48-point victory, New York won by the second-largest margin in league history. The record is 59 points, set by the Minnesota Lynx in 2017 with a 111–52 victory over the Indiana Fever. Advertisement The Liberty came close to that margin when an Isabelle Harrison jumper gave them an 85-30 lead with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. New York outscored Connecticut 30-8 in the quarter. "It was our first third quarter that we executed the way we wanted to," Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said afterward. "We've been talking about it. [Jonquel Jones] said that was our best third quarter in Liberty history. We didn't let down, I was happy with that." Minnesota also set a record in that 2017 game with a 45-point lead at halftime, but the Liberty fell short of that mark with a 32-point margin after the first two quarters of play. Advertisement History was still within reach going into the fourth quarter with New York holding a 90-36 lead. However, the Liberty eased up and only scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes while the Sun scored 16. The team can still say it set a franchise record for largest margin of victory. New York did tie a league mark that the team set just last week with 19 3s in defeating the Chicago Sky, 99-74. Sabrina Ionescu hit 4-of-6 3-pointers, while Jones and Leonie Fiebich each went 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Ionescu finished with a game-high 18 points, while Fiebich, Jones and Breanna Stewart each scored 13 points. Jones also grabbed 11 rebounds for New York and Natasha Cloud dished out seven assists. Tina Charles and Jacy Sheldon each scored 10 points for the Sun, who dropped to 1-6 with the defeat. Marina Mabrey and Aneesah Morrow both added eight points. The win improved the Liberty's record to 7-0, tying the best start to a season in franchise history set in 1997. The Lynx can match that mark atop the 2025 league standings with a win over the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday night. However, both teams are just over halfway to the 13-0 start by the 2013 Lynx, which is the best start in WNBA history.

Liberty's hot shooting leads to 100-52 rout of Sun for 2nd-biggest margin of victory in WNBA history
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Liberty's offense has been clicking during the early part of this season and that's led to the team's best start since the league debuted in 1997. New York improved to 7-0 to start the season with a 100-52 rout of the Connecticut Sun, which was the second-biggest margin of victory in WNBA history. The Liberty have scored 82 or more points in all seven games, eclipsing the 90-point mark five times. Advertisement The game was billed as a birthday celebration of New York's loveable mascot Ellie the Elephant, but quickly the home team gave its fans a lot more to cheer for. A 31-point first quarter showcased New York's offensive firepower against the Sun, who are in rebuilding mode with a whole new starting five this season. By the time the first half ended, the Liberty held a 60-28 advantage behind strong play from its stars Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. New York shot 68% from the field in the first half and made 12 3-pointers. The Liberty played unselfishly with assists on their first 19 baskets, finishing the game with 29, including a nifty behind-the-back pass from Natasha Cloud to Leonie Fiebich for a 3-pointer. 'There's no one-on-one, no hero ball, just understanding of searching for our best shot,' Ionescu said. 'It was fun out there, just getting everyone going and feeling good.' Advertisement There was no complacency in the second half as the Liberty challenged a host of WNBA records, including scoring margin, 3-pointers made and field goal percentage. The Liberty were in range of the 59-point WNBA record that Minnesota holds in a win over Indiana, but fell short of that mark. Still the 48-point win was the second largest in league history and set the franchise mark for biggest win. 'There's a lot we can take away offensively and defensively,' said Connecticut guard Jacy Sheldon, who led the team with 10 points. 'Any time you get your butt kicked you can learn a lot.' Ten different players hit a 3-pointer as the team finished with 19. Kennedy Burke hit the last one, which tied the franchise and league record of 19 the team set on May 22, with 6:25 left in the game. Even with the fans chanting for one more 3, the Liberty couldn't break their own record, missing a few over the final few minutes. Advertisement 'It was great to see the contributions from everyone,' Ionescu said. 'Everyone scored and contributed in an impactful way from start to finish.' Now New York will get a little rest after playing its fourth game in six days. The Liberty don't play again until visiting Washington on Thursday. ___ AP WNBA:
