Jordan customs foils smuggling attempt of over 2,000 cigarette cases

Jordan Customs announced on Sunday that it successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cigarettes, with 2,389 cases hidden in a secret compartment of a refrigerated truck driven by an Arab national. The operation took place at the Al Karamah border crossing, in cooperation with security agencies, as reported by the department's spokesperson. The statement explained that customs officers became suspicious of a truck arriving from a neighboring country and subjected it to a thorough inspection, leading to the discovery of specially designed compartments for smuggling the cigarette cases. The spokesperson confirmed that these cigarettes were intended to be smuggled illegally, bypassing inspections from relevant authorities and not meeting Jordan's regulatory standards, posing a risk to public health and safety. Additionally, they evaded customs duties.
