Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend
Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend originally appeared on The Sporting News Bo Jackson's Return to Auburn will include the 40th anniversary of his Heisman glory. When Jackson suited up for the Tigers in 1982, fans knew he was special. But no one could've predicted he'd become a sports icon. A two-sport pro athlete, a Nike ad legend, and one of the most dominant forces in college football history. Now, Auburn is making sure that legacy never fades. On Nov. 29, during this year's Iron Bowl, the Tigers will honor the 40th anniversary of Jackson's 1985 Heisman Trophy season. A tribute fit for a giant, as Bo's name will echo through Jordan-Hare Stadium once again. A Heisman Season for the Ages In 1985, Jackson didn't just play football, he redefined it. He rushed for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging a staggering 6.4 yards per carry. At the time, that rushing total ranked second in SEC history. And even now, four decades later, it's a benchmark that defines greatness. That season earned Jackson Auburn's second Heisman Trophy, solidifying his place in college football history. But it was more than numbers, it was the way he played. Grace, speed, and pure strength. More Than Just a Football Star Jackson wasn't just dominant on the gridiron. He starred in three sports, football, baseball, and track during his time on The Plains. After Auburn, he made sports history again, becoming the only athlete ever named an All-Star in both the NFL and MLB. He played eight seasons in the majors and was named the 1989 MLB All-Star Game MVP. In the NFL, he ran for 2,782 yards and 16 touchdowns in just four seasons with the Raiders before a hip injury ended his football career in 1991. A Tribute 40 Years in the Making Now, Auburn is bringing it full circle. Jackson will be honored during this year's Iron Bowl, which is historically Auburn's biggest stage. It's not just about looking back. It's about reminding fans, recruits, and rivals alike what excellence looks like. 'Bo's 1985 season ranks among the greatest in the storied history of Auburn and the Southeastern Conference,' said AD John Cohen. 'It is our privilege to honor Bo.' Auburn football's FCS opponent, Mercer, earns preseason top 25 spot
Auburn football's 2025 slate will feature one of the top teams at the FCS level. The preseason FCS Poll has been released, and it features Auburn's Nov. 22 opponent, the Mercer Bears. The Bears will begin the season ranked No. 11 at the FCS level. The Bears earn high preseason recognition after winning 11 games and ending the 2024 season ranked No. 8 in the country. Mercer is ahead of several notable programs, such as Idaho, Sacramento State, and Richmond, and trails the likes of Montana State, South Dakota, and the FCS preseason No. 1 team, North Dakota State. Auburn will face the Bears near the end of the 2025 campaign, as Mercer will visit Jordan-Hare Stadium one week before the highly anticipated Iron Bowl. There is a great chance that the Bears could hold a higher ranking by the time they visit the Plains, as they will face two ranked FCS teams in No. 8 UC Davis and No. 18 Western Carolina during the regular season. Last season, Mercer began the year by winning five straight games before stumbling on the road at Samford. The Bears then went on a run where they won four of their final five regular-season games, with the lone loss coming to Alabama on Nov. 9. Mercer's season ultimately ended in the second round of the FCS playoffs with a loss to eventual national champion North Dakota State. The Tigers and Bears will square off on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will begin at 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on SEC Network+. Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium Ranking for EA Sports College Football 26 Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Auburn Tigers have not won more than six games since 2019, but Jordan-Hare Stadium still makes opposing teams uneasy. Advertisement The prestigious venue came in at No. 17 in the EA Sports College Football 26 toughest places to play rankings. The toughest places to play rankings factor into how difficult it is for away teams to be able to call plays, audibles and even see routes the receivers are running in the game. The feature was introduced in last year's game, EA Sports College Football 25, ending a nearly 10-year hiatus in the video game franchise's history. Before last year, the previous edition in the series was NCAA Football 14 in 2013. The standard edition of the game will have Alabama Crimson Tide star Ryan Williams and Ohio State Buckeyes wideout Jeremiah Smith. The deluxe edition features various athletes and fans of schools that are in the game. Advertisement Auburn got off to a decent start at home last season, going 2-1 in its first three games. The Tigers then dropped games to the Arkansas Razorbacks and Oklahoma Sooners at home. The team lost the following home game to the Vanderbilt Commodores before recovering, winning its final two games of the 2024 season at Jordan-Hare Stadium over UL Monroe and the Texas A&M Aggies. While the July 10 release of the game is exciting for Auburn fans, the Tigers' recent recruiting endeavors have been anything but. Auburn lost the race for tight end Xavier Tiller to the Florida State Seminoles. The team has also had longtime commits Devin Carter and Shadarius Toodle flip to different programs. Carter flipped from Auburn to Florida State and Toodle switched his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs. Advertisement Auburn begins the 2025 season against the Baylor Bears on August 30.
