Super Bowl champion Jordan Mailata takes aim at Aussie NBA star Ben Simmons

Sydney-born Super Bowl champion Jordan Mailata has taken a swipe at Aussie NBA star Ben Simmons for how he handled his controversial exit from the Philadelphia 76ers. In a frank interview with the GQ Magazine, Mailata didn't take a backwards step when asked about Simmons being ran out of Philadelphia by the city's rabid fans. The Eagles offensive tackle says the Melbourne hoops star mishandled the situation at the 76ers in 2022 by refusing to practice and play until his trade request was honoured, resulting in an NBA record $17 million in fines. 'It's pretty simple to play in Philly,' said Mailata, who became the first Australian to win a Super Bowl as a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles in February. 'You give everything, the fans will love you. You don't give everything, they bully you out of town. And that's what happened to Benny. Take ownership when you f*** up, it's as simple as that. If you start pointing fingers at fans, you might as well just say, 'Hey, can I get a trade please?'.' Simmons' NBA career is again at a crossroads with the 28-year-old off-contract and no longer the commodity that can secure a five-year $270 million deal like his designated rookie extension back in 2019. Instead, the former No.1 draft pick will have to settle for a much more modest deal on the open market. In February, Simmons signed a one-year veteran minimum contract with the Los Angeles Clippers worth $1.2 million. It remains to be seen whether the Clippers re-sign the polarising Aussie following another underwhelming, injury-plagued season, averaging 16.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in just 18 games. Jordan Mailata is on the June/July issue 2025 issue of GQ Australia, out exclusively inside The Australian on June 13.

Jordan Mailata Ranked NFL's Best Tackle as Eagles' Dominance Reaches New Peak

Jordan Mailata Ranked NFL's Best Tackle as Eagles' Dominance Reaches New Peak originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles have built their championship foundation from the trenches, and their dominance was showcased when left tackle Jordan Mailata was recognized as the NFL's premier offensive lineman heading into 2025 according to Pro Football Focus rankings. Advertisement PFF's evaluation of the league's top 32 offensive tackles for the 2025 season placed Mailata at No. 1, surpassing San Francisco's Trent Williams. The former Australian rugby star's ascension represents validation of Philadelphia's development system and the exceptional coaching of Jeff Stoutland, who transformed Mailata into one of his most important success stories. Mailata's journey from the rugby pitches of Bankstown, Sydney, to the NFL's summit remains remarkable. Born in Australia, he played rugby league for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs before pursuing NFL dreams through the International Player Pathway Program. His 6-foot-8, 365-pound frame caught the Eagles' attention, but Stoutland's masterful development turned potential into elite production. Under Stoutland's wing, Mailata became the most complete offensive tackle in football. As PFF analyst Zoltan Buday noted, "Only two offensive tackles earned PFF pass-blocking grades above 90.0, and only two earned PFF run-blocking grades above 90.0. Philadelphia's left tackle was the only one to achieve both feats." His 95.2 overall PFF grade led all offensive tackles. Mailata's excellence pairs with teammate Lane Johnson (No. 5 ranking) to give Philadelphia the NFL's best tackle tandem. This duo anchored the line that enabled Saquon Barkley's historic 2,500-yard rushing season (regular season and postseason), showcasing how Stoutland's systematic approach creates cohesive units that maximize collective performance. Advertisement At 28, Mailata earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024. Despite his PFF dominance, he was surprisingly omitted from the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selections, suggesting 2025 could bring overdue recognition. In a league where pass rush continues evolving, having elite protection on both edges becomes increasingly valuable. Jordan Mailata's recognition validates his remarkable journey from Bankstown rugby fields to American football's pinnacle, serving as the crown jewel in Jeff Stoutland's impressive coaching legacy while anchoring Philadelphia's championship aspirations. Jordan Mailata has developed into the best left tackle in the NFL, and the Eagles' star is already impressed by the team's trio of rookie offensive linemen this spring. Mailata discussed both sixth-round pick Myles Hinton from Michigan and sixth-round pick Cameron Williams from Texas with Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia. 'The effort, the grind,' Mailata said this spring. 'A couple days we had to get on them a little bit. I got on them a little bit. Now we're into the second week together. Man, just the effort they put into the drills. When they make a mistake, they correct the next day. 'That is showing that someone is coachable. It's not just the physical side. It's can they learn from their mistakes and can they apply it the next day when we're doing that drill? Myles and Cam are doing a great job.' Kendall was drafted in the fifth round after starting 36 games at the center position during his career at Boston College and was named first team All-ACC in 2024. Hinton, 23, is 6-7 and 325 pounds and played both left tackle and right tackle at Michigan and Stanford. The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Williams, a true junior, projects as an NFL tackle. He started 16 games for the Longhorns and played in 37 games, serving as an anchor of an offensive line that was a Joe Moore Award finalist in 2024. Williams was projected as the 28th best player available in the NFL draft, per initial ESPN rankings, and was slotted at No. 28 in the early mock draft by ESPN's Field Yates. ESPN's Matt Miller ranked Williams as his No. 3 overall tackle in the draft, while ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him 7th at the position.

Aussie punter axed … but trio of new faces have NFL dreams realised

An ever-growing Australian contingent in the NFL has been reduced by one after the San Francisco 49ers axed punter Mitch Wishnowsky. But his departure has been off-set by a trio of rookie signings that have swelled the punting ranks to seven. Taken in the fourth round of the 2109 NFL draft, at pick 110, Wishnowsky, from Perth, played in 92 games for the 49ers, including 12 playoff games and two losing Super Bowls in 2019 and 2024. He started the 2025 season in good form before a back injury sidelined him for the final eight games last season. Wishnowsky was replaced by 39-year-old Thomas Morstead, who spent the past two seasons at the New York Jets after spending most of his career with the New Orleans Saints. His exit comes after the contingent of Australian punters in the NFL actually expanded. Jeremy Crenshaw was drafted by the Denver Broncos, while James Burnip was taken as an undrafted free agent by the Saints and Oscar Chapman added to the Minnesota Vikings roster. They join established punters Michael Dickson at Seattle, Tory Taylor at the Chicago Bears and Cameron Johnston at the Pittsburgh Steelers. Super Bowl winning Philadelphia Eagles star Jordan Mailata leads a big number of Australians involved in the NFL, with former Wallabies star Jordan Petaia signing with the LA Chargers and Queensland club rugby player Laki Tasi earning a deal with the LA Raiders. Both were signed out of the NFL's international player pathway program.
