SWAT KATS Are Back: '90s Animated Classic Returns as a Comic Book Series — GeekTyrant

After three decades of cult fandom, the jet-fueled heroes of SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron are making a high-octane return in comic book form. For fans who grew up watching T-Bone and Razor blast through MegaKat City, this revival is a full-throttle expansion of the world we've been waiting to revisit. The new series is titled MegaKat City Has Fallen , and it's the first official SWAT Kats comic ever. Spearheaded by co-writers Frank J. Barbiere ( Avengers , Lobo , Five Ghosts ) and Kevin Roditeli ( The Exiled , Zorro: Man of the Dead ), with art by Jorge Corona ( Batgirl , Middlewest ). Veteran editor Joseph P. Illidge ( Batman , Milestone ) is also on board. The series will launch this fall on Kickstarter, packed with exclusive content and surprises for both longtime fans and first-time readers. ' SWAT Kats was one of my favorite animated shows of its time because of its unique mix of adventure, characters with believable personalities, and city politics,' said Illidge. ' Batman meets Blacksad . So when Kevin offered me the opportunity to join his radical squadron as editor, it was an automatic, 'Let's go!' We're looking forward to reigniting this world for you in a new era of high-level action with bigger stakes.' Originally created by Christian and Yvon Tremblay, SWAT Kats aired in 1993 and became a standout series on Cartoon Network. It was gritty, fast, and surprisingly mature for a Saturday morning cartoon, mixing slick fighter jets with dark urban crime drama. The show was produced by Hanna-Barbera. 'We are absolutely thrilled to bring new storytelling to the SWAT Kats universe,' said the Tremblay brothers. 'We are equally excited that such outstanding collaborators are joining us in this first-ever comic book series.' The plot picks up with MegaKat City in ruins and the Radical Squadron facing their biggest threat yet. It's a story that builds on the show's original energy while ramping up the stakes for a new generation. 'I'm honored and excited to be contributing to the world of the SWAT Kats ,' said Barbiere. 'As a fan who grew up and was inspired by the action and excitement of the original series, I'm working hard with the team to deliver an energetic, modern take that will thrill longtime fans and a new audience ready for the Radical Squadron.' Artist Jorge Corona is just as fired up. 'From being a kid watching the show and filling notepads with missile designs for the Turbo Kat… to now being part of the first comic iteration of the Radical Squadron—it's pretty awesome.' The Kickstarter campaign will include exclusive variants, collectibles, and fan-first perks. While there have been past attempts to revive the show, including the proposed SWAT-KATS Revolution , this comic marks the first time the series officially returns in a new narrative format. And it could be the start of a much larger relaunch across multiple platforms. Fans can follow the project on Kickstarter to get updates and early access when the campaign launches. Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering the Turbo Kat for the first time, MegaKat City Has Fallen is shaping up to be a radical return.

North Texas surgeons working in Ukraine to ease "in-the-mirror" reminders of war

It's been more than three years since Russia invaded Ukraine. The bombs are still dropping and even those that survive will never be the same. "Once you see war firsthand, it just, it's so sad," said Dallas oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Jorge Corona. "Because it's not just the soldiers and their families that suffer, but the whole country." Corona is a part of a group of North Texans tapping a combination of technology, surgical skill and compassion to ease the "in-the-mirror" reminders of war, with ocular facial reconstruction for wounded soldiers and civilians. "It's incredible how sad it is to see them, their faces destroyed," said Corona. "But, by restoring their faces, we feel that we are restoring their humanity." For most, the horrors of war have never been any closer than video clips. But for Corona, the mission became one of moral principles. "Well, when you look at history, in 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Europe," said Corona. "Now we are in the 21st century, and the same thing is happening with Russia invading Ukraine. I'm not a soldier. But I didn't want to stay on the sidelines." Wielding a scalpel instead of a weapon, Corona and the team were often forced to retreat to bomb shelters but made the most of every moment. Following a three-hour surgery, a Ukrainian soldier's face has been rebuilt using a titanium implant manufactured in North Texas at MedCAD. "MedCAD is a patient-specific medical device company and everything we make is for one patient for one surgery," said MedCAD President and CEO Nancy Hairston. Hairston said the process begins with patient CT data sent from Ukraine. "And from there, we design a surgical kit that includes implants and surgical devices that allow them to kind of get in and get out when they're in the OR most efficiently as possible to provide the best, the most optimal type of reconstruction that's possible," said Hairston. Organizers say the Plano manufacturing facility is where "science meets art", but it's clear that compassion is the driving force. "I mean, it's just incredible to see how this will be in their lives forever," Corona said. "And these individuals that we're working with are getting, their, as Jorge said, their humanity back," said Hairston. "That they can look in the mirror and not have that reminder that they were in a horribly traumatic situation. And it's very moving for our team to learn and hear the stories. It's sort of buoys everybody's day to hear that we've made such a difference."

Robert Kirkman is Taking Over TRANSFORMERS, and He's Bringing Artist Dan Mora With Him — GeekTyrant

The next phase of Transformers is about to go full throttle with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman in the driver's seat and DC Comics artist Dan Mora riding shotgun. Skybound's Transformers title, part of the growing Energon Universe that also includes G.I. Joe, has been a fan-favorite since launch thanks to the creative energy of writer Daniel Warren Johnson and artist Jorge Corona. With their run coming to a close, Skybound is handing the keys to Kirkman. Kirkman in a statement: 'Holy smokes, I'm writing a TRANSFORMERS comic! I've been so invested in this series since the beginning. I've marveled at what Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona have brought to some of my all-time favorite characters. 'When Daniel's run came to an end, I could stand on the sidelines no more! I just had to get in the ring! It's a tremendous honor to be a small part of the legacy of these amazing characters. 'This world has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can't wait for everyone to see what the legendary Dan Mora and I are cooking up!' Mora, known for his slick, detailed work on Batman/Superman: World's Finest and Justice League Unlimited , is joining Kirkman on this new chapter, though it's not clear if he'll be stepping away from DC duties or balancing both. Either way, the pairing is a big deal for longtime Transformers readers and newcomers alike. Mora said: "I've been a huge TRANSFORMERS fan ever since I can remember, so it's been a real thrill to come aboard the series with the equally thrilling Robert Kirkman. I've also been a huge fan of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona, and what they've done on this title has literally been out of this world. 'Drawing my favorite Autobots and Decepticons brings me back to all of the fun I had playing with them as a kid, so I hope to add my own spark to their legacy and can't wait for fans to see what Robert and I have been toying with for the Energon Universe next!" Transformers #25 will mark the beginning of the new era, featuring a main story by Kirkman and Mora, with returning colorist Mike Spicer and letterer Rus Wooton. There's also a special backup story by Kirkman and outgoing artist Jorge Corona serving as a proper sendoff to the duo that helped reignite the brand. Variant covers for the issue will include work from David Nakayama, Kael Ngu, Jae Lee and June Chung, and, of course, pieces from Johnson, Corona, and Mora himself. There's even a blank sketch variant if you want to add your own flair. Transformers #25 rolls out on October 8, 2025.
