The victims, who had just rented a car from Faro Airport, include 20-year-old twins, their 55-year-old father and their 51-year-old mother. ‌ They have been named by authorities as Jose Fale, his wife Maria Joao, and their twin sons Domingos and Afonso. The girlfriend of one of the twins, a 19-year-old woman, also died in the horrific accident, along with a Portuguese man travelling alone in the other vehicle involved in the collision. ‌ The family were en route from the Algarve to Mourao in the district of Evora near the Spanish border when the tragedy occurred at around 1.40am on the IP2 main road in Castro Verde. ‌ It is thought they approximately halfway to their destination. According to well-placed police sources, all four members of the family held British passports, although the parents originally hailed from Mourao and were returning there for their holidays, reports the Express. The same sources confirmed that the twins were born in the UK, despite Mourao Town Hall describing all four as coming from the municipality but living in Britain. ‌ It is believed that the girlfriend of one of the boys was of Polish origin but also lived in the UK. It is not yet know where in Britain the family live and how many years ago the twins' parents emigrated and have been living in the UK. The man driving alone in the second vehicle has been named locally as Ruben Goncalves, who is from the Portuguese town of Almodovar. He had been travelling southbound on the IP2. ‌ The circumstances behind the tragic crash are currently under investigation by GNR police officers. Municipal authorities in Mourao have announced two days of mourning beginning tomorrow. A spokesperson revealed: "The Municipal Council of Mourao has decreed two days of municipal mourning, effective from tomorrow, Sunday, following the death of five family members involved in a traffic accident last night on the IP2, near Castro Verde. ‌ "The Municipality, in coordination with the family and law enforcement authorities, namely the local GNR Post in Castro Verde, obtained the number plate of the vehicle they were travelling in and confirmed the identity of the passengers at 3:35 p.m today. "There were four occupants in the car, all from Mourao, and a young woman with ties to the family. "Residents of England, they were traveling from Faro to Mourao for their usual and well-deserved vacation. The family had travelled from England, where they lived. ‌ A Portuguese man driving the other car, named as 26-year-old Ruben Goncalves, also died in the head-on collision near Castro Verde, between Faro and Mourao. He worked in a zinc-copper mine and had a young son, the Mirror reports. ‌ A source close to the investigation into the crash said: 'The car was such a wreck officers could only recover half a number-plate and with that began working on trying to establish the identity. 'Today a daughter of the couple killed alongside their twin sons, worried because she had heard about the crash in Portugal and was concerned because she couldn't contact her loved ones, rang the police to speak about her fears it was her family involved. ‌ 'With the information she gave them officers made checks with the hire car firm at Faro Airport and tragically discovered a match. 'That was how they were able to confirm the identities of the five occupants in the car with the four members of the same family inside.' Local reports said the hire car, a Nissan Juke, burst into flames following the impact. Images from the crash site showed the wreckage in a field, where the fire took hold. ‌ The collision occurred on a bend on the IP2 road, where the speed limit is 80kph (almost 50mph). Locals have since shared their shock at the incident on social media. Tania Marques Da Cruz wrote: 'My most sincere condolences to all those killed. I hope their souls rest in peace. It's so sad to hear of people leaving their homeland and friends in search of a better life and then have their lives end like this. How unfair life is.' Cesar Caleiro commented: 'My sincere condolences to the loved ones of those killed. Mourao must rally round to comfort the families of the victims.' ‌ A local paper in Mourao, confirming the names of the family, said: 'Jose Fale and his wife Maria Joao and their sons died along with their daughter-in-law.
