Weird & Wild: Twins' Jose Miranda summons his inner ‘Hamilton'
Editor's note: This is a bonus Weird and Wild column. To read more Weird and Wild from the past week, go here. Poor Jose Miranda. There are a million things he hasn't done. But if this past week was any indication, just you wait. Just in the past week, the Minnesota Twins' third baseman was out even when he was safe. … And that got him shipped back to the minor leagues … where he headed off to Target … and wound up as the early leader in our annual Injury of the Year competition. Advertisement So you know who's here to tell his story? We are! Let's hear a big hand now for … the cast (and chorus) of the Weird and Wild column. We don't know if history has its eyes on Jose. But we do. So in honor of his cousin — that Lin-Manuel Miranda guy, of 'Hamilton' fame — here's how we think the cast of 'Hamilton' would rise up and put Jose Miranda's week in its proper perspective. It was only last season that Miranda did something only three other players in history have ever done. He headed for home plate and got a hit in 12 at-bats in a row. So perhaps you thought that would have been enough to get him into the Twins' big-league (locker) room where it happens this season. But that was before he wandered onto the base paths last Saturday … where this unfortunate thing transpired. Umpire called Jose Miranda safe, saying the fielder didn't touch the base to get the forceout. But then Miranda just walked away and got tagged out anyway. — Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) April 12, 2025 Oops! We think Lin-Manuel could have gotten a whole act out of that scene alone, featuring our chorus singing … • 'What'd I Miss?' • 'Wait for It' • 'Say No to This' • 'Stay Alive' And … judging by the stories on this game on our very site … that regrettable gaffe appeared to turn into … • 'The Story of Tonight' Which then led to an even more unfortunate development for our hero … It never feels like a good plan for baseball job security to find a way to get yourself tagged out even when you're safe. But it's an even worse plan when you're 6-for-36, hitting .167/.167/.250 and have an OPS+ of (wait for it) 18. So what happened to Miranda after that Safe Wait No I'm Not Game? The Twins shipped him right on back to Triple-A St. Paul. And that inspired our Weird and Wild Chorus to launch into renditions of: • 'Take a Break' Advertisement • 'The World Turned Upside-Down' And (with any luck) … • 'You'll Be Back' Except then, last Monday, Jose Miranda went shopping. And by the time he was through, he was … By now you probably have heard this story. But just in 'case' you haven't … According to the Twins, Miranda was zipping through Target and, because hydration is often the key to salvation, he grabbed a case of water off the shelf. Good idea, except … Those cases of water can get bulky and slippery on you — and this one attempted a daring escape from Miranda's hands. So he did what any great athlete would do at a time like that — try to … Catch it. But those cases of water are heavy, you know! So that didn't go well, either. Next thing we knew, Miranda was heading for the St. Paul injured list with a strained left hand … incurred in the most watery way possible. Twins notes from the minors: – Zebby Matthews starts for Triple-A St. Paul tonight, a week after his last outing. – Jose Miranda was placed on the Triple-A injured list with a hand strain before playing a game. – Brock Stewart begins a rehab assignment at Low-A Fort Myers. — Aaron Gleeman (@ April 15, 2025 at 2:46 PM We'd advise him to spend the next week heeding Aaron Burr's advice for Hamilton: Talk less, smile more. But that's going to be hard, when the cast of Weird and Wild is all around him, singing catchy tunes like: • 'Stay Alive' • 'Helpless' • 'How Lucky (You) Are To Be Alive Right Now' • '(Left) Hand Man' • 'Say No to This' And (accompanied by Rocco Baldelli and the Twins Singers) … • 'That Would Be Enough' Now this can still be a story of redemption, you understand. Miranda's season isn't over. Miranda's career isn't over. And this will not result in any ill-fated duels — with Ryan Burr or anyone else. So there will always be more chances for men talented enough to go 12-for-12. But … Yikes. What a week! So Jose, the world's gonna know your name. And we're aware we just helped with that. But who lives? Who dies? Who tells your story? That can still be you, Jose. Unless you prefer to leave it to … the Weird and Wild chorus! And man, we sure hope not. After all this singing, our vocal cords are officially shredded. (Photo of Colt Keith tagging out Jose Miranda on April 12: David Berding / Getty Images)

Twins demote struggling Jose Miranda to minors after base-running blunder: Source
MINNEAPOLIS — Less than an hour after Saturday's shutout loss to the Detroit Tigers dropped Minnesota's record to 4-11, a league source tells The Athletic the Twins are demoting struggling third baseman Jose Miranda to Triple-A St. Paul. Miranda hit .167 with 13 strikeouts and zero walks in 12 games, with his struggles standing out even within a lineup full of slumping hitters, but his base-running blunder Saturday may have been the final straw. Advertisement With the Twins down 4-0 in the eighth inning and Miranda on first base, Christian Vázquez hit a chopper to Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who threw to second base for the force out. However, umpire Malachi Moore ruled that second baseman Colt Keith's foot never touched the base, calling Miranda safe to give the Twins a chance for a rally. But there was one big problem: Miranda assumed he was out, stopped his slide before ever touching second base and then casually started to walk back to the dugout, at which point Keith tagged him for the delayed out. Umpire called Jose Miranda safe, saying the fielder didn't touch the base to get the forceout. But then Miranda just walked away and got tagged out anyway. [image or embed] — Aaron Gleeman (@ April 12, 2025 at 3:23 PM 'No, (the umpire) didn't yell,' Miranda said. 'I just didn't know. I slid in, but he had the ball. I thought he would throw to first. But I had no clue. Not until he tagged me.' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, who had already reduced Miranda's playing time recently, was critical of the mistake following the game. 'Jose has to do better on that play,' Baldelli said. 'The guy on the other side of the field was not on the bag and Jose didn't make it to the bag on the slide either way. And the umpire was clearly signaling safe. We have to be paying attention, to say the least. We have to be paying attention there and never allow something like that to happen.' 'It's just a learning thing,' said Miranda. 'Keep grinding in this game, and things like that happen. Learn from it. That's it.' No corresponding roster move has been announced yet, but the Twins are expected to activate infielder Brooks Lee from the injured list to replace Miranda. Lee, a 2022 first-round pick and former consensus top-50 prospect, has been rehabbing a spring training back injury in St. Paul this week, going 3-for-10 in three games before a day off Saturday. Miranda seemingly had a breakout first half last season, hitting .326 with an .888 OPS in 76 games through the All-Star break, including a record-setting streak of 12 straight at-bats with a hit in early July. However, he took a big step backward in the second half, hitting just .212 with a .543 OPS in 45 games, and those struggles intensified early this season. Advertisement Miranda once looked like a lineup building block for the Twins and he's still just 26 years old, but inconsistent production and a lack of plate discipline combined with limited fielding skills have made him difficult to rely on as an everyday player, even with starting third baseman Royce Lewis sidelined by a hamstring injury. And with the Twins off to a 4-11 start that's tied for the worst record in team history through 15 games, Baldelli hinted Saturday at the possibility of changes that could 'shock' and 'wake up' the underperforming roster. 'You've got shock yourself sometimes and wake yourself up sometimes,' Baldelli said. 'We might be pretty close to that, because we've got to play better baseball. … I think we could be getting there, where we need to make some adjustments, we need to do some different things, try some guys in different spots. That could be one way of shaking it up a little bit.' Miranda has played poorly enough — at the plate, in the field and on the bases — to warrant the demotion, but sending down a former top prospect with 298 games and 1,100 plate appearances of big-league experience spanning parts of four seasons certainly qualifies as a shock to the Twins' system. Twins top Astros 6-1 behind Jose Miranda's 3-run homer in 6-run 4th inning
Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Miranda's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fourth inning that ignited the Minnesota Twins in a 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon. The Twins were hitless against Spencer Arighetti (1-1) until the fourth, when Miranda sent a two-out, two-strike curveball into the left-field seats for a 4-1 lead. Matt Wallner added an RBI double during that 10-batter inning aided by two errors and Arighetti's wildness. The Twins totaled only six runs over their 0-4 start and topped that total only once in their first seven games. Twins starter Bailey Ober bounced back from a rough opening start in St. Louis, allowing a leadoff home run to Jose Altuve but nothing else over four strong innings. Ober gave up eight hits and eight runs in 2 2/3 innings to the Cardinals last week. Cole Sands (1-0) struck out two in a perfect sixth for the victory, one of five Twins relievers who combined to strike out eight without a walk over five scoreless innings. Altuve had three hits after striking out in each of his five at-bats on Thursday, the most whiffs of his career. Key moment Byron Buxton was hit on the hand by a 92 mph full-count fastball from Arrighetti starting the fateful fourth, before stealing second. He scored after a single by Ty France, racing home when Altuve fumbled the ball as he began his throw. Buxton's run stopped an 11-inning scoreless streak for the Twins. Key stat After two consecutive games without drawing a walk, the first time they'd done that since Sept. 16-17, 2022, Twins batters had four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Up next RHP Ronel Blanco (0-1, 5.40 ERA) starts the series finale for Houston on Sunday. RHP Chris Paddack (0-1, 24.30 ERA) pitches for Minnesota. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Twins ride 5-run inning to beat White Sox, get first win
April 2 - Jose Miranda delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in a five-run sixth inning and Ryan Jeffers and Ty France each had two hits and an RBI as the Minnesota Twins topped the host Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Tuesday. Outscored 28-6 during an 0-4 start, the Twins regrouped to earn their first victory of the season. After retiring the first two batters in the Minnesota sixth, Chicago rookie right-hander Shane Smith -- making his major league debut -- walked two straight Twins before being lifted for Penn Murfee. Jeffers greeted him with an RBI single to bring Minnesota within 3-1 before France followed to decrease the deficit to a run. Edouard Julien added a run-scoring single after a hit-by-pitch to set the stage for Miranda, who punctuated the two-out rally with a two-run single. Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer in the ninth to cap the scoring. Smith took a no-decision, spacing two runs and two hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. Murfee (0-1) was the loser, allowing three runs and four hits without retiring a batter. Chicago built a 3-0 lead after five innings. Brooks Baldwin opened the scoring with an RBI single to center field with one out in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. With reliever Louis Varland entering the game for starter Simeon Woods Richardson, Nick Maton smacked a solo homer in the fifth to push the White Sox advantage to 3-0. Woods Richardson scattered two runs and five hits in four innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Varland (1-0) allowed a run and a hit with two strikeouts in his inning of work to get the win. Minnesota pitchers retired eight of the next nine White Sox after the Maton home run. Jorge Alcala struck out the side in the seventh as the Twins struck out 13. Lenyn Sosa and Andrew Benintendi each went 3-for-4 to pace Chicago's nine-hit attack. The White Sox put two runners on with one out in the eighth but Griffin Jax escaped trouble by inducing Miguel Vargas on a lineout and striking out Sosa.
