April 2 - Jose Miranda delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in a five-run sixth inning and Ryan Jeffers and Ty France each had two hits and an RBI as the Minnesota Twins topped the host Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Tuesday.
Outscored 28-6 during an 0-4 start, the Twins regrouped to earn their first victory of the season.
After retiring the first two batters in the Minnesota sixth, Chicago rookie right-hander Shane Smith -- making his major league debut -- walked two straight Twins before being lifted for Penn Murfee.
Jeffers greeted him with an RBI single to bring Minnesota within 3-1 before France followed to decrease the deficit to a run. Edouard Julien added a run-scoring single after a hit-by-pitch to set the stage for Miranda, who punctuated the two-out rally with a two-run single.
Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Smith took a no-decision, spacing two runs and two hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. Murfee (0-1) was the loser, allowing three runs and four hits without retiring a batter.
Chicago built a 3-0 lead after five innings. Brooks Baldwin opened the scoring with an RBI single to center field with one out in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
With reliever Louis Varland entering the game for starter Simeon Woods Richardson, Nick Maton smacked a solo homer in the fifth to push the White Sox advantage to 3-0.
Woods Richardson scattered two runs and five hits in four innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Varland (1-0) allowed a run and a hit with two strikeouts in his inning of work to get the win.
Minnesota pitchers retired eight of the next nine White Sox after the Maton home run. Jorge Alcala struck out the side in the seventh as the Twins struck out 13.
Lenyn Sosa and Andrew Benintendi each went 3-for-4 to pace Chicago's nine-hit attack.
The White Sox put two runners on with one out in the eighth but Griffin Jax escaped trouble by inducing Miguel Vargas on a lineout and striking out Sosa.

Rare Luis Robert homer (and double) spark White Sox past Astros

June 11 - Shane Smith produced the fourth quality start of his rookie season while Luis Robert Jr. belted his first home run in five weeks as the visiting Chicago White Sox claimed a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday in the opener of their three-game series. Smith (3-3), who dropped his ERA to 2.37, matched his career-high of six innings by routinely wiggling free of danger. He induced inning-ending double plays in the second, fourth and sixth while stranding five baserunners to extend his run of exceptional pitching. Smith has allowed three or fewer earned runs in all 13 starts this season, including seven appearances with one earned run or fewer. The White Sox spotted Smith a 3-0 lead in the third when Edgar Quero smacked a two-run, two-out single to left field off Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (1-2) that scored Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth. Before Quero drilled his opposite-field hit, McCullers appeared primed to escape a bases-loaded jam unscathed after inducing Miguel Vargas to pop up for the second out. Robert supplied the White Sox with a 1-0 lead in the second with his two-out double to right that scored Kyle Teel. When he faced McCullers a second time leading off the fourth, Robert bashed a 1-0 changeup into the left-field seats for his sixth homer of the season and first since May 2 in a 7-3 win over the Astros. Robert sat out three games last week to focus on special sessions with Ryan Fuller, the team's director of hitting. McCullers labored throughout with his control. He allowed four runs on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts over five innings. Of his 96 pitches, only 51 were strikes as McCullers leaned heavily on his off-speed stuff with 42 sliders and 14 knuckle-curves. Smith, meanwhile, allowed seven hits and issued two walks while recording four strikeouts. He surrendered a sacrifice fly to Isaac Paredes in the third inning that drove home Cam Smith, who reached on a leadoff single. The Astros loaded the bases with no outs against White Sox reliever Steven Wilson in the eighth, but they managed only a Yainer Diaz sacrifice fly that drove in Jeremy Pena. Wilson struck out Christian Walker and retired Jake Meyers on a fly to Robert in center to snuff the threat. --Field Level Media

Rangers score season-high 16 runs in rout of Twins

June 11 - Kyle Higashioka doubled and drove in five runs, Josh Jung doubled and drove in four runs and the Texas Rangers stormed to a 16-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in Minneapolis. Evan Carter went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for Texas, which set a season high in runs. Wyatt Langford also homered as the Rangers won the opener of a three-game series. Matt Wallner homered for the Twins, who fell to 1-3 with two games remaining on their homestand. Byron Buxton went 3-for-4 with a double. Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (6-3) earned the victory despite allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three. Twins right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (2-3) surrendered seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four on the same day he was promoted from Triple-A St. Paul to fill the rotation spot of injured starter Zebby Matthews. The Rangers led 3-2 after four innings before erupting for five runs in the fifth. Jung started the big inning with a two-run single to left, and Higashioka followed two batters later with a two-run double to right. Josh Smith added an RBI single to put the Rangers on top 8-2. The Twins pulled within 8-3 on Ryan Jeffers' RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Carter continued the Rangers' hit parade with a two-run blast to make it 10-3 in the sixth. He pulled a 394-foot shot to right for his second homer in as many games. Wallner led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to cut the deficit to 10-4. Texas put the game away with a six-run eighth inning. Langford led off with a 395-foot homer to left, and Carter drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI single to right. Jung delivered next with a two-run double to center to make it 14-4. Then came a sacrifice fly to right by Adolis Garcia and finally an RBI groundout by Higashioka to get to the final tally. --Field Level Media
