We Were Liars Season 2: Renewal status, potential release date and everything we know so far

It was emotional, twisted, and totally unexpected. And now, like the rest of us, you're probably wondering: Are we going back to Beechwood Island for another round of Sinclair family secrets? Let's talk about what's going on with season 2—because while there's no official answer yet, there's definitely some hopeful noise. Has We Were Liars Been Renewed for Season 2? As of now (end of July 2025), Prime Video hasn't made an official announcement about renewing We Were Liars for another season. The show only dropped on June 18, so it's still pretty fresh, and streaming platforms usually take a few weeks (sometimes longer) to see how a show is performing before giving it the green light. But here's the good news: it's doing really well. Like, number-one-in-over-20-countries well. And that kind of buzz doesn't go unnoticed. Even though there's no renewal yet, E. Lockhart—the author of the book the series is based on—recently said, 'I don't have any news to share about season two yet. [But] it's not a limited series!' That alone gives us hope. Add in the fact that the showrunners (Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie) have also shown interest in continuing the story, and yeah—it feels like something is definitely brewing. We Were Liars Season 2 Expected Cast The cast depends on where the story goes: Prequel Route ( Family of Liars ) : We'd likely see a younger cast playing teenage Penny, Carrie, and Bess in the 1987 setting. Mamie Gummer and Joseph Zada would probably return, since Carrie's talks with Johnny's ghost are central to the prequel. One catch: Joseph Zada's role in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping might mess with his schedule, but his ghost character makes him a strong candidate to return either way. We Were Liars Season 2 Potential Release Date If Prime Video gives the go-ahead soon, the earliest we might see season 2 is sometime in 2026. The timeline kind of tracks—season 1 was ordered in 2023, filmed in mid-2024, and released in June 2025. So a similar schedule could be possible for a follow-up. But here's where it gets a little tricky: season 2 might not be a direct continuation. There's a chance they go the prequel route, which would mean a different cast and storyline (and probably more time to film). On the flip side, if they choose to pick up from the present-day story—or align with Lockhart's upcoming companion novel, We Fell Apart (releasing in November 2025)—we might be looking at a 2026 release, especially if production kicks off soon after the book drops. Ralph Fiennes joins top cast of new Hunger Games film
The latest Hunger Games prequel film, Sunrise on the Reaping, is slated for release on 20 November 2026. Ralph Fiennes has joined the cast as President Coriolanus Snow, a role previously portrayed by Donald Sutherland and Tom Blyth. The new movie will centre on a young Haymitch Abernathy as he competes in the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The narrative is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen 's story and 40 years after the events of The Ballads of Songbirds & Snakes. Key casting announcements include Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Joseph Zada as Haymitch, and Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee.

The Hunger Games' Woody Harrelson Hasn't Owned A Phone In Years, But The New Haymitch Actor Still Managed To Get A Sweet Message After Nabbing The Role

For over a decade, since the first Hunger Games movie came out, the role of Haymitch Abernathy has belonged solely to Woody Harrelson. However, now that one of the upcoming book adaptations is a prequel called Sunrise on the Reaping that explores the character's own Hunger Games experiences as a teenager, newcomer Joseph Zada has been cast as a young Haymitch alongside a dream cast including Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close and more. Ahead of the movie soon filming this summer, yes, Zada heard from the original Haymitch. Joseph Zada has been promoting his new series We Were Liars recently, and with that, we've learned a lot more about the actor's experience so far with being the new Hunger Games lead. For one, he told CinemaBlend that he's learning about the cast the same way we are after being put through the ringer to get the role. Here's what Zada said about connecting with Harrelson: I've been in Sydney with my family, just soaking up as much time as I can before I go off to film, but I did get a nice little message. From Woody's niece, I think. He doesn't have a phone. I'm sure I'll speak to him eventually, but apparently he's very happy for me. Even though Harrelson isn't one to use a phone, Zada told Vanity Fair that he's received a message from the actor's niece to communicate his support for him taking on the role after him. How sweet is that? If you're wondering why the heck a movie star like Woody Harrelson doesn't have a phone, the actor actually talked about it last year on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name (via THR). While in conversation with his co-host and Cheers co-star Ted Danson, revealed the piece of information before Harrelson expanded on why. Here's his take: I just don't like to have to be readily available to any human being at any time. And plus, that's not the reason. I like to be in touch with people, in a way, but I don't like the appendage on my appendage. Harrelson apparently gave up having a phone around four years ago because he realized he would spend way too much time on it. As he continued: I made a thing where I'm like, 'OK, I'm gonna set a two-hour limit on my phone… It's like 9:30. I've already hit my limit at 9:30. So I woke up and I've been on it two hours already, because you know how it can just keep going and going. Hey, I'm sure a lot of us can relate to that! And as proved by what Joseph Zada said about his interaction with Harrelson, the actor still takes the time to communicate with people even if he doesn't have his own phone. Woody Harrelson's role in The Hunger Games movies is one of his best roles, so it's great to hear he's happy about the pick!
