Snubbed By Oscars, ‘Will & Harper,' ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Score Multiple Emmy Nominations

Will & Harper and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story missed out on Oscar nominations, but they got their due this morning from Television Academy voters. Will & Harper, the story of Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele who embarked on a road trip after Harper came out as trans, earned five nominations, tied for the most in the nonfiction categories. The Netflix documentary, directed by Josh Greenbaum, will compete in the premier category of Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special where it will go up against Deaf President Now!, Martha, Pee-wee As Himself, and Sly Lives! (Aka The Burden Of Black Genius). Scroll for the full list of documentary category nominations. More from Deadline Primetime Emmy Nominations: The Complete List Emmys: Catherine O'Hara & Julianne Nicholson Score Double Acting Nominations 'The Daily Show' Nearly Doubles Its Own Emmy Record Kristen Wiig, overlooked for an Oscar nomination for her song from Will & Harper, made up for that with an Emmy nomination for 'Will and Harper Go West.' She shares co-writing credit on that song with Greenbaum and Sean Douglas, who also earned nominations. Along with Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, Will & Harper earned nominations for its cinematography, Josh Greenbaum's directing, and picture editing. 'I'm very proud of it. I mean, I've been proud of this film since it got created, and I'm happy that this will bring it maybe even a bigger audience,' Harper Steele told Deadline this morning, acknowledging a bit of a residual sting from the Oscar oversight – Will & Harper made the shortlist, but fell short of an Academy Award nomination. 'I was disappointed with the Oscar snub, but yeah, who knows the inner workings of the doc branch of the Oscars. I don't, but I'm happy to see that people still think highly of the film.' Steele, who served as head writer at Saturday Night Live, where she formed bonds with Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig and other SNL talents, shared her thoughts on Wiig being recognized for her tender and amusing song from Will & Harper. '[I'm] very happy Kristen was involved in this project. I have a special place in my heart for her,' Steele said. Noting Wiig's songwriting ability, she added, 'She's unsurprisingly talented at this point.' Steele also saluted Greenbaum for earning recognition for his direction. 'You have to be happy for all the blood and sweat that went into it, that basically Will and I had nothing to do with,' she noted. 'We just drove.' Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, an in-depth look at the late Superman star, earned an impressive four Emmy nominations, including recognition for directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui. The film, from HBO Max and DC Studios, also earned recognition for writing, picture editing, and Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score). The Super/Man Emmy love comes as another actor dons the red cape and boots – David Corenswet, starring in the James Gunn-directed Superman, which is off to a flying start at the box office ($220m worldwide and climbing). Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story not only examines the actor's iconic take on Clark Kent and the Man of Steel, but on his activism on behalf of people with disabilities after he became paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. The documentary features his children, Matthew, Alexandra, and Will. For timeliness, Will & Harper could hardly be more newsworthy. Donald Trump ran for a second term as president in part on stigmatizing trans and nonbinary people (one of his ad's declared 'Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you'). In an executive order he issued shortly after taking office again, Trump barked, 'Medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child's sex.' And on June 18, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law that restricted trans minors' access to medical treatments like puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The immediacy of Will & Harper isn't lost on Steele. 'This is why I want the film to be out there and promoted in any possible way. I think there's a misunderstanding around trans people in general, but that's probably due to fear mongering more than people's understanding or people's knowledge of trans people,' Steele observed. 'And the fear mongering is deep and has been long lasting even before the Trump administration. I don't know what this film can actually do, but in some small way, I hope it adds to the conversation that allows people to understand that there is nothing to fear with trans people. Nothing at all.' Final Emmy voting takes place from August 18-27. The documentary category winners will be revealed at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 6 and 7 (highlights will air Sept. 13 on FXX). The main Primetime Emmy ceremony will be held Sept. 14, airing on CBS and Paramount+. New 'Spaceballs' film announced in epic video with Mel Brooks: Watch here

A new "Spaceballs" film is coming, with Mel Brooks slated to return in his iconic role as Yogurt, Amazon MGM Studios announced on Thursday. While details about the film's plot and cast are being kept under wraps, it is being described as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film." Josh Greenbaum, known for directing "Will & Harper," "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar," and more, is slated to direct. It opens with onscreen text in the iconic " Star Wars"-style crawl, which reads, "Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one 'Star Wars' trilogy. But since then, there have been… a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff, which is both a prequel and a sequel...." The crawl continues, noting the release of two "Dune" films, seven "Jurassic Park" films, multiple past and upcoming "Avatar" films, and more, adding, "But in 38 years, there has only ever been one… 'SPACEBALLS'… Until now…." Brooks, also the director of the original 1987 "Spaceballs" film, then appears onscreen, saying, "After 40 years, we asked, 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie." The video cuts to an image of Lord Dark Helmet with text that reads, "The Schwartz Awakens in 2027." "May the Schwartz be with you," Brooks adds. The legendary filmmaker also took to X and shared the announcement in a post, writing, "I told you we'd be back." "Spaceballs" premiered nearly four decades ago. Set in a distant galaxy, the cult-classic space opera film, co-written by Brooks, parodies the "Star Wars" trilogy and other popular sci-fi franchises including "Star Trek," "2001: A Space Odyssey" and more. According to a synopsis for the film, it follows a star-pilot for hire and his sidekick, who must come to the rescue of a princess and save Planet Druidia from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs. Brooks starred in the film alongside John Candy, Rick Moranis, Joan Rivers, Daphne Zuniga and more. The new "Spaceballs" film will be produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Josh Gad and Josh Greenbaum. Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez will also executive produce. The new film will arrive in 2027.

Executive producing are Sean Gorman and Daniel Barnes for Cloudco. Sheila Walcott oversees the feature for the studio. Care Bears got their start on greeting cards in the early 1980s and landed their own television series later that decade. They have been the focus of such films as 1985's animated The Care Bears Movie, which featured Mickey Rooney among the voice cast. Created by Elena Kucharik and Linda Denham, the Care Bears are friendly creatures with images on their bellies that reflect their unique personalities. Greenbaum is known for such features as Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Strays and the documentary Will & Harper. He is in post-production on The Dink, a pickleball movie starring Ben Stiller and Jake Johnson. Greenbaum is also attached to direct a Spaceballs sequel film for Amazon MGM Studios. The Care Bears franchise is owned by Cloudco Entertainment, formerly known as American Greetings Entertainment, which is behind the recent animated series Care Bears: Unlock the Magic. Greenbaum is represented by UTA, Entertainment 360 and Lichter Grossman. Daley and Goldstein are repped by CAA, Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson. Bender and Weiner are repped by Mortimer PR and Rick Genow & Allison Binder. Deadline was first to report on the project. Josh Greenbaum Set to Direct CARE BEARS Movie For Warner Bros. — GeekTyrant

Director Josh Greenbaum is a busy guy - following the award-winning run of his documentary Will & Harper , he has been tapped to helm a new Spaceballs sequel, and now he has signed on to direct a new Care Bears film for Warner Bros. Pictures. Good Fear's Chris Bender and Jake Weiner will produce alongside GoldDay's Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Sean Gorman and Daniel Barnes from rightsholder Cloudco will exec produce, with Sheila Walcott overseeing for Warner Bros. The project doesn't yet have a writer yet, so we are in the dark considering storyline, but most of us are at least familiar with the Care Bear characters from our youth. Care Bears has an interesting origin story, as the franchise was built around greeting card characters popularized in the 1980s by American Greetings (now Cloudco Entertainment). Each bear had a distinct color and 'belly badge' that symbolized their personality and duty — with names like Tenderheart Bear, Cheer Bear, and Grumpy Bear — the idea being to personify different emotions and positive traits to help children express their feelings and foster empathy. The popularity of the cards led to the creation of a toy line, which then spurred animated TV specials and, eventually, a TV series. The original Care Bears cartoon aired from 1985 to 1988 and was followed by three theatrical films spanning the mid-to-late 1980s. Over the decades, the franchise has undergone several revivals. New iterations of the Care Bears TV series were released in the 2000s, 2010s, and most recently with Care Bears: Unlock the Magic , which launched in 2019.
