Two Israeli embassy staff shot dead near Jewish museum in Washington

Two staff members of the Israeli embassy were shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday evening, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed. Both victims succumbed to their injuries. The shooting took place near the museum, which is located close to several major federal buildings. At the time of the incident, the American Jewish Committee was hosting its annual Young Diplomats Reception, organised by the AJC's DC Young Professional Board, according to Josh Kraushaar, editor in chief of Jewish Insider. Kraushaar reported on X the suspect allegedly shouted 'Free Palestine' after opening fire. He also cited a witness who said, 'After the shooting a guy came inside saying he saw it and needed water and a safe space, then whipped out a keffiyeh and yelled 'Free Palestine' a bunch before being escorted out by police.' ABC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that one victim died at the scene, while the second was transported to a DC hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to their injuries. Police have detained a person of interest who is currently being questioned. Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, condemned the shooting in a statement posted on social media, calling it an act of terrorism. 'The fatal shooting that took place outside the event that took place at the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, is a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism. Harming the Jewish community is crossing a red line,' Danon wrote. 'We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act. Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives – everywhere in the world.' So far, US authorities have not officially confirmed a motive for the shooting. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not yet been made public. An investigation is ongoing.

Two Israeli embassy staff fatally shot near Jewish Museum in Washington DC

Two Israeli embassy staffers have been fatally shot outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C., authorities have said. The shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. on the 300 block of F St NW – outside the Capital Jewish museum – on Wednesday evening, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. One person is believed to be have died shortly after the attack and a second was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and also died. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later confirmed the news, writing on X: 'Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington DC. 'We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share. Please pray for the families of the victims. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice.' The identity of any suspects has not been shared, nor has a motive. However, the FBI later reported that there was no ongoing threat to public safety. A person of interest is being by being questioned by police, according to ABC. According to Josh Kraushaar, editor in chief of Jewish Insider, the incident occurred following the annual Young Diplomats Reception hosted by the American Jewish Committee's DC Young Professional Board. Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, confirmed to ABC News that the organization had hosted an event at the museum on Wednesday night. "We are devastated that an unspeakable act of violence took place outside the venue,' he told the outlet. 'At this moment, as we await more information from the police about exactly what transpired, our attention and our hearts are solely with those who were harmed and their families." U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was at the scene, of the 'horrible shooting.' 'Praying for the victims of this violence as we work to learn more,' she said.
