Celtics Mailbag: What's next for Boston after releasing point guard?

The Celtics wrapped up Summer League in Las Vegas this past week following the debut of three new rookies on the roster. Boston has started tweaking the roster in the aftermath with the release of JD Davison Thursday, but let's talk about the roster, potential additions and more in this week's mailbag. Is Brad done making moves this off-season? And what is your best guess at the starting five in October? —jjsully Who will be Celtics starting C on opening night? — Adam M The guess here is the Celtics aren't done this offseason but how they proceed is truly going to depend on the trade market. They were able to successfully navigate getting off Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis deals without giving up any future assets while also cutting a lot of money from the payroll. Moving forward, it wouldn't surprise me to see them cut more payroll in order to reduce a luxury tax bill and saving that spending for next season when Jayson Tatum's back healthy. The financial benefits of starting to reset the repeater tax can't be ignored either. However, the Celtics don't want to give up draft capital likely to dump more money so they aren't going to jump on a deal right now that requires that. How patient they will be on that front will be fascinating to watch, but the guess here is more tinkering is coming. Onto the starting five. Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are the only names you can put in right now with permanent marker. I'd bet on Payton Pritchard starting over Anfernee Simons (if he's still here opening night) but a case could be made that Simons is better served in that starting role with the sixth man of the year remaining in his place. Neemias Queta feels like the frontrunner at center given the continuity and the fact someone needs to rebound on this team. Elsewhere, pencil in Sam Hauser or Georges Niang in the fifth spot with Josh Minott being a potential wildcard. Will be an interesting battle in training camp to see how exactly Joe Mazzulla wants to play with this group. Any news on Tilman's knee? Understand he had surgery last off season and that was a major reason for his poor play. — Honestdenverman Nothing that I've heard. He made an appearance in Las Vegas to watch the Celtics in Summer League alongside new additions Luka Garza, Josh Minott and Georges Niang but he did not speak with the media. Tillman's numbers last season were horrific in his limited minutes so the team has to hope a bounce back of some form is in order since he likely would be not on an NBA team right now without a guaranteed deal. Boston probably needs to sweeten the pot in order to clear his roster spot but he's a good locker room guy and obviously is capable of much better basketball than we saw last season if he's healthy. Whether he's healthy enough to get back to that level is the biggest question. Curious to hear your take on what you've seen with the Summer League team in relation to this Brad Stevens quote: 'they're trying a bunch of stuff out there now with our Summer League team that we haven't done in the past' — Joel V I think we're going to see more uptempo basketball than we've seen before under Stevens or Joe Mazzulla. Boston's best healthy talent across the roster right now like to play at a high speed and we saw plenty of that in Vegas with the team running hard off both makes and misses. With no more Jayson Tatum isolations to lean on or elite shooting at all five positions, playing fast is probably the best path. Defensively, I think we saw a lot more ball pressure in Summer League than normal from this group and that's a nod to the style we could see with this revamped group potentially in October. What letter grade would you give the Celtics for their offseason efforts so far? This includes free agency, trades, releases and the draft. — Ed H Part of me wants to go with an incomplete grade here since I believe there is more coming but that's a cop out. For now, I'd go with a B. I think the team did well with Holiday/Porzingis trades given the hand they were dealt. I wonder about letting Kornet walk at that price tag with no proven starting center in the pipeline (is that money better off going to Kornet or Hauser if you choose one?) but time will tell on that one. Can't judge Garza/Minott deals really until we see them and same goes for draft guys. Going younger with minimum deals makes sense as well as finding guys that will commit to two years. Ben Simmons to Boston probability if you were to give a % -- Bryce No inside knowledge on this but just judging from the money and situation, I'd probably put it between 10-20 percent. He gets opportunity here potentially but isn't going to get paid. A couple of potential spots out there where he could get both. Was there not enough upside to keep Davison? Dude was G League player of the year! Or they just needed to get under the second apron and he was the one who had to go given his contract? -- Rob JD was in the system for three years so the team had a very long look at him. Did not get many opportunities at NBA level but never looked like a guy who deserved more minutes in those spots. Ultimately, he's a late second-round pick, so he was always going to be a long shot to make it in the NBA. Possible it could still happen elsewhere but his shooting/size/defense never rose to NBA level here. Which members of the Boston Celtics roster must show improvements next season?

The Boston Celtics will enter the 2025-26 season with multiple new faces on the roster. Luka Garza, Josh Minott and Hugo Gonzalez all project to be part of Joe Mazzulla's rotation, having joined the franchise over the summer. Of course, we may need to add second-round selections Amari Williams and Max Shulga to that list, should they find a way of breaking into Mazzulla's plans. As a retooling team, the Celtics are taking some flyers on younger talent with a point to prove. The hope will be that they can either prove themselves as future contributors or potentially increase their trade value around the NBA to help facilitate a future deal for an additional star. During a recent conversation on NESN's "Hold My Banner" podcast, the hosts discussed which members of Boston's rotation will need to show developmental jumps throughout the season, with second-year talent Baylor Scheierman, third-year forward Jordan Walsh, and Garza among the three names discussed. Who have the Celtics signed so far in an offseason of change?

What should we expect from the Celtics after roster was gutted in offseason? What should we expect from the Celtics after roster was gutted in offseason? What should we expect from the Celtics after roster was gutted in offseason? So far for the Boston Celtics, the offseason has been mostly about subtraction. Subtracting star players like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and subtracting their massive contracts from the books. Mix in the fact that Jayson Tatum is likely out all of next season as he recovers from an Achilles injury, and it hasn't been a pretty or easily digestible offseason for Celtics fans. Al Horford hasn't even left town yet, which will create even more discomfort in Boston. But Brad Stevens is still making moves to keep the C's going in what will likely be a transition season for the team. Since NBA Free Agency tipped off last week, Stevens has added a pair of players to the Boston roster in forward Josh Minott and big man Luka Garza. Neither are going to bring in "Banner 19" vibes, but here's what they'll bring to the 2025-26 Celtics. Who is Josh Minott? Boston has reportedly signed 22-year-old forward Josh Minott to a two-year deal worth $5 million, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Minott was a a second-round pick in 2022 after just one season at Memphis, and was sent from Charlotte to Minnesota in a draft-night trade. He played in 93 games over his three seasons with the Timberwolves, including a career-high 46 games in 2024-25. Minott averaged 2.6 points off 48.9 percent shooting over 6.0 minutes per game for Minnesota last season. Minott is known for brining loads of energy off the bench, which has earned him the nickname "The Lawn Mower." Minott is likely set for a bench role in Boston and gives the Celtics some depth at wing alongside Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, and potentially rookie Hugo Gonzalez. Who is Luka Garza? With signs pointing toward Horford playing elsewhere and Luke Kornet reportedly getting $41 million from the Spurs, the Celtics are desperate for center depth. Former Timberwolves and Pistons big man Luka Garza will help in that department, reportedly agreeing to a two-year, $5.5 million deal with Boston, according to Charania. Garza has four NBA seasons under his belt after he was a second-round pick by the Pistons in 2021 out of Iowa. He played just one season in Detroit before he signed a two-way deal with the Timberwolves in 2022. He hasn't started a game since his rookie season in 2021-22, but Garza has seen action in 124 contests over his four seasons. The 6-foot-10 Garza has averaged 4.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game over his career. He's a career 49 percent shooter overall but doesn't offer much from downtown, as he's hit just 31.4 percent off his 1.3 attempts per game. More moves ahead for Celtics Neither the Minott or Garza signings have become official for Boston, nor have the Holiday and Porzingis trades. But the two signings give Boston 15 players on its roster and puts the franchise back over the second luxury tax apron, so more moves will be coming the rest of the way for Stevens and company. Horford is expected to make his free-agent decision in the near future, which will likely create another hole on the Boston roster. More subtraction from the Boston roster will likely coming from elsewhere, too. Swingman Anfernee Simons (acquired for Holiday) and big man Georges Naing (acquired in the Porzingis trade) shouldn't get too comfy in Green, and sharpshooter Sam Hauser could be dealt before the season begins. The Celtics don't have to get under the apron until the trade deadline, so Stevens' wheeling and dealing could continue throughout the regular season. If you were hoping for more additions this offseason, the Celtics are reportedly interested in signing veteran guard Damian Lillard. But like Tatum, he's set to miss next season as he recovers from an Achilles injury he suffered last postseason, so he won't help for 2025-26.

Best of new Boston Celtics forward Josh Minott in 2024-25

Fans of the Boston Celtics are trying to get an idea about what sort of player new Celtics signee Josh Minott is after Boston elected to give him a two-year, $5 million deal as one of their few moves to date in the NBA's 2025 free agency period. The 6-foot-8 small forward did not see a lot of floor time at his last stop, the Minnesota Timberwolves, but he was playing a bit when injuries opened opportunities that he made the most of. If the Memphis alum has a longer runway with the Celtics, could he be a stealthy win of a signing for Boston? And what is his game like in the first place? Minott very well could be, and to answer the second hypothetical question, the man behind the eponymous "Tomasz Kordylewski (Timi)" YouTube channel put together a clip taking a closer look.
