East Kilbride's new signings making rapid exit explained, as boss seeks replacements
Josh O'Connor and Mouhamed Niang quit K-Park within weeks of signing up for the new season East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy has revealed new signings Josh O'Connor and Mouhamed Niang left the club just three weeks after joining because he could not guarantee them a starting place this season. The duo strking duo signed late last month with former Airdrie and Hibs youngster O'Connor arriving from Crusaders and Niang from Dumbarton, having been their player of the year. However, a change of heart from both has seen Niang join League Two rivals Clyde and O'Connor join Elgin City, where he ironically played against and lost 4-1 to EK in Saturday's Premier Sports Cup clash. And Kennedy has explained their exits from the club, saying: 'When the boys came in, we had conversations quite early on and they were concerned about their ability to play once they were in amongst the group, and we were just honest with them. 'Niang, in particular, was looking for assurances that he was going to be guaranteed to play every week but I just explained to him that wasn't going to happen. I don't think anyone gets those assurances at East Kilbride. 'So he just asked that, if that was the case, could he move on? And I said: 'Yeah, of course.' 'Josh was slightly behind the group when he came in and, after conversations with his agent, there was just a bit of concern that he was going to take a bit of time to get up to speed and be in a position to play. There was a nervousness there that with his next move he had to be playing week in, week out, and we weren't convinced that would happen, especially early on. 'So they asked if they could pursue another option and we said 'of course'. Ultimately, I just want people to be happy playing football, whether that is at East Kilbride or somewhere else. There certainly was no-one forcing them out the club or asking them to leave. 'I think they've maybe come in and assessed the standard that is here, the boys just felt that they wanted to be guaranteed to play. 'With the window still open, we felt it was best to give them another option and gives us time to get one or two players in.'
