Criminal Minds: The Surprising Story Behind That Shocking Will Scene

There was a funny moment during my recent Zoom with Criminal Minds: Evolution star (and TVLine Performer of the Week honorable mention) A.J. Cook, to discuss JJ tragically losing her husband Will after 18 years together. She and I were talking about the late Linda Lavin guest-starring as WIll's mother Connie… and franchise vet Matthew Gray Gubler's cameo as Spencer… when I quipped about her TV husband's unexpected Episode 2 encore: More from TVLine Criminal Minds: A.J. Cook Opens Up About JJ's Loss, Her Real-Life Sons Playing 'Big Emotions,' and Negotiating That Brief Cameo All Stars 10 Is the Best Drag Race Season in Years - and It's About to Get Even Better (Exclusive Sneak Peek) Criminal Minds: Who Made a Surprise Appearance at Will's Funeral? 'When Josh [Stewart] showed up, was he like, 'Hey, how are you doing? I'm here to die'?' Because I, like at least some of you, was curious about Stewart returning to set for Will's migraine/collapse in the kitchen. Except, Cook was quick to correct me, Stewart did not return for that scene. Once the decision was made to kill off Will (via a rare kind of aneurysm), it was agreed that it would be impolite to ask Stewart — who was famously MIA from Season 17 — back just for a brief, sad moment. Instead, a deleted scene from Evolution's first season was used. 'People don't know this, I guess,' Cook said, clocking my confusion over Stewart's Episode 2 appearance. 'But he wasn't coming back to the show,' and as such, 'Our writers had to get very creative. 'Remember the cancer storyline that we wrote in [during Evolution's first season]?' reminded Cook. 'We so badly were like, 'We don't want [Josh] to think he's going to die,' we got so freaked out by it, that we pulled this scene [of Will collapsing]. That's how much we did not want Josh to leave us.' But when Will's number indeed came up early into Season 18, 'our brilliant showrunner [Erica Messer] was like, 'Oh my gosh, we have this scene that we never used…,'' Cook recalled. 'Erica Messer put the pieces of a really complicated puzzle together, and it worked,' Cook continued. 'It's weird how it happened that way, but that just goes to show how much we just did not want any more pain to come to this family' — at least back in Season 1. More Entertainment: 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' Season 18 Debuts May 8: Full List of Episodes What Happened to Will in 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' Fans were completely caught off guard in Episode 2 when Will LaMontagne Jr. surprisingly died from an aneurysm in front of JJ, his wife. While this created a dramatic story beat, there was actually a behind-the-scenes reason for this death. While no reason has been given since the death, actor Josh Stewart confirmed in January 2024 that he wasn't returning for the season. No sadly, my days of playing Will LaMontagne Jr. are over. You guys have been the absolute best. 🙏 — Josh Stewart (@J0SHSTEWART) January 17, 2024 Showrunner Erica Messer later confirmed this in an interview with TVLine, noting that they love Will, but it was time to move on. Cast members have since spoken out in their love for the character and Stewart. "[It] was a really difficult episode to shoot, because we were saying goodbye to Will, and we were saying goodbye to Josh Stewart, who's played Will for what, maybe 17 years?" Paget Brewster said to The Independent. Is Spencer Reid Returning to 'Criminal Minds: Evolution'? While it's said to see Will go, a fan-favorite character is returning in his absence. Matthew Gray Gubler officially made his return as Spencer Reid in Season 18, Episode 3 during Will's funeral. However, this doesn't mean that Gubler is necessarily returning to 'Criminal Minds' full-time. First look at 'EINSTEIN', starring Matthew Gray Gubler The series follows the great grandson of Albert Einstein whose bad-boy antics end up with him having to help a local police detective solve cases of the week. — DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) May 8, 2025 The talented actor is set to star in the upcoming CBS series 'Einstein,' a comedic procedural where Gubler plays a descendant of Albert Einstein who winds up helping police solve crime. Will 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' Feature a JJ and Reid Romance? Naturally, Reid's reappearance has fans wondering if the romance between he and JJ will spark up once again, especially since the 'Evolution' has been ignoring While making a move at Will's funeral would have obviously been in bad taste, it cannot be denied that there is now an opening for the relationship to turn more intimate. That being said, this will all depend on a few things: whether the writers actually want to put a focus on that relationship and whether Gubler will be sticking around much longer. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait and see. Researchers issue urgent warning after witnessing disturbing behavioral shift in ocean species: 'It's really just horrific'

Thousands of gray whales are migrating north from Mexico's Baja lagoons in visibly emaciated condition, with some so thin their ribs are protruding. Researchers report record-low calf numbers and fear another mass die-off is underway, per a report published in The Oregonian. Scientists point to the warming Arctic as the root cause of the potential crisis. Melting sea ice disrupts the growth of algae that feeds the seafloor ecosystem, which in turn supports the shrimp-like amphipods gray whales depend on. With less food available, whales are arriving at breeding grounds malnourished and leaving with even less energy to complete their 12,000-mile migration north. "All the signs are indicating there has been a pretty intensive change in the Arctic," said Josh Stewart, an ecologist in Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute in Newport. This isn't the gray whale's first crisis. Between 2018 and 2023, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an "unusual mortality event" after nearly 700 gray whales stranded along the West Coast. Though the declaration was lifted in late 2023, spring's alarming reports suggest the threat is far from over. What's more, gray whale calves are nearly nowhere to be found. During the whales' fall southbound journey, not a single calf was spotted — a first in over 40 years of tracking. Now, on their northbound return, only three calves have been observed, compared to 21 just last year. "The numbers so far are the lowest ever and the whales we are seeing are extremely emaciated," said Alisa Schulman-Janiger, a leading whale census worker. "They have bulging ribs with shoulder blades and vertebrae visible even from shore. It's really just horrific." Gray whales are resilient — they've survived commercial whaling and past climate shifts. But their challenges are piling up: warming oceans, shrinking food supplies, and microplastics. A recent study found that nearly 70% of marine mammals sampled had microplastics embedded in their lungs and fat. When whales struggle, it's a warning sign for the rest of the world. These animals help regulate the ocean's carbon cycle and support the food chains that coastal communities rely on for everything from fishing to tourism. A collapse in whale populations signals deeper instability in marine ecosystems, which can threaten livelihoods, local economies, and even our access to affordable, sustainable seafood. The ocean is absorbing 90% of the planet's excess heat, and marine heat waves are now reaching the seafloor, lasting longer and hitting harder than surface events. But you can help to fight back against a warming climate. Cut back on single-use plastics: Reduce microplastic pollution by choosing reusable items. Support clean energy initiatives: Lower carbon pollution to slow ocean warming. Stay informed: Follow organizations such as the NOAA and local marine mammal networks to track whale health and strandings. Get involved locally: Many coastal areas have marine mammal stranding response teams or citizen science programs that rely on volunteers. Your time and awareness can directly support whale conservation and ocean health. Do you think America has a plastic waste problem? Texas A&M will face No. 1 Tennessee in a double-header on Saturday due to weather

Texas A&M will face No. 1 Tennessee in a double-header on Saturday due to weather Texas A&M's fourth SEC series begins on Friday night. The struggling Aggies will take on No. 1 Tennessee on the road for the first time since losing to the Volunteers in the National Championship round last summer. Sitting at 14-14 and 1-8 in SEC play, Texas A&M's postseason chances are eliminated unless this team suddenly improves, which isn't likely given the recent injuries. This week, head coach Michael Earley provided several injury updates, including relief pitcher Josh Stewart, who will miss the rest of the regular season due to his ongoing right knee injury that could never heal in time, ending his 2025 campaign. While the bullpen continues to deal with attrition issues, first baseman Gavin Kash is also dealing with his own injury issues and will not be available vs. Tennessee this weekend. Before Game 1, Texas A&M's challenges continued after the news that inclement weather in Knoxville (TN) resulted in Sunday's Game 3 being moved to Saturday, as both teams will meet for a doubleheader, meaning A&M's bullpen will need to stay relatively fresh to have a chance at notching at least one win in the series. Texas A&M baseball loses another key player for the rest of the 2025 season

Texas A&M baseball loses another key player for the rest of the 2025 season Texas A&M baseball suffered another major blow to its bullpen with the news that Josh Stewart would not return this season. On Thursday, Aggie head coach Michael Earley broke the news that Stewart would not see the field again in 2025 and could possibly need surgery on his knee. "I think Stewart, we are probably moving towards the surgery won't pitch this season." Veteran relief pitcher Stewart was expected to step up and guide the relief corps this year. However, hopes were dashed when Stewart left the mound in visible discomfort after facing just one batter, raising concerns about his readiness moving forward. Stewart proved instrumental in the Aggies' memorable postseason run, finishing the year with solid stats. 2-2 record, 39 strikeouts, and a solid 4.26 ERA across 25 relief appearances. His presence provided stability and confidence on the mound, making his departure a difficult moment for the Aggies. The Aggies nation wishes Stewart a swift recovery and eagerly anticipates his return to action, where his veteran leadership and pitching prowess can once again shine. Texas A&M will travel to face Tennessee on Friday, April 4, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
