Tarling abandons Giro after stage 16 barrier crash

Britain's Josh Tarling has been forced to abandon the Giro d'Italia after a crash on stage 16. Ineos Grenadiers rider Tarling, 21, slid on a very wet surface early on Tuesday's stage and suffered a heavy crash into a barrier. The three-week Italian race began well for the Welsh rider when he claimed his first Grand Tour stage win with victory in the stage two time trial. Tarling was unable to repeat that success in the race's second time trial, but finished second, seven seconds behind Dutchman Daan Hoole, on stage 10. Although there were no further individual efforts against the clock to come before Sunday's finish in Rome, Tarling would have been hoping to complete a three-week Grand Tour for the first time. Roglic loses time as Verona wins Giro stage 15 Tarling was part of a seven-rider breakaway that had established a 30-second lead over the peleton as the race resumed in heavy rain after Monday's second rest day. The Welshman slid out on a roundabout, with his bike going from under him and his body hitting the barrier. Ineos Grenadiers confirmed the 2023 European time trial champion would not continue. "Josh Tarling has unfortunately had to abandon the Giro d'Italia following a crash on today's stage," the team said on social media. "Our team doctor is with him and he is undergoing further assessment. We will provide an update on his condition as soon as possible." Tarling started stage 16 in 101st place - more than two hours behind race leader, Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates).

Giro d'Italia 2025 LIVE: Stage 11 updates, route and results as race returns to mountains

The 2025 Giro d'Italia heads back into the hills with a tough outing in the Apennines, which could yet see a further shakeup of the general classification. It's officially classed as a 'hilly' rather than mountainous stage, but the 186km run from Viareggio to Castelnovo ne' Monti features 3,850m of elevation and gain and a behemoth of a climb in the category one Alpe San Pellegrino, which last featured in the Giro 25 years ago. The stage comes after an intriguing battle on stage 10's time-trial, in which Daan Hoole took a maiden Grand Tour stage victory, denying Josh Tarling a double against the clock after winning stage two's shorter contre-la-montre in Albania. The GC contenders struggled in wet conditions later on but Primoz Roglic, having slipped to 10th on Sunday, made up more than a minute of his time deficit to reignite his bid for a second maglia rosa after victory in 2023. Good morning Hello and welcome to live coverage of stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia! With all the time-trialling out the way after stage 10, today the race heads back into the mountains (technically it's hilly, but there's an Alpe on the parcours today, so that feels a bit of an understatement). We'll have all the build-up and action right here. Flo Clifford21 May 2025 09:30

Dutchman Daan Hoole secured his first Grand Tour stage win as he beat Great Britain's Josh Tarling in the time trial on stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia in Ayuso finished 22nd, over a minute and half down, but cut UAE Team Emirates -XRG team-mate Isaac del Toro's lead in the general classification to 25 rider Hoole finished seven seconds clear of Ineos Grenadiers' Tarling with a time of 32 minutes and 30 seconds, with British national road champion Ethan Hayter, 26, 10 seconds back on Hoole in 21, was the pre-stage favourite after winning the first time trial of the race on stage two, but he was unable to match the performance of Hoole over the 28 kilometre course between Lucca and Pisa on Tuesday. "I'm so happy and there are so many people I need to thank. I just can't believe it," said 26-year-old Hoole, who took advantage of dry roads before torrential rain hampered the later starters, who were the general classification contenders. Race leader Del Toro of Mexico finished in 37th place, two minutes 22 seconds behind Hoole, but retained the pink jersey. Briton Simon Yates of Visma-Lease a Bike moved up two places in the standings to fourth after placing 23rd. Overall race favourite Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, who lost time after a crash on Sunday, finished one minute 15 seconds down on Hoole in 17th place. But the 2023 Giro champion made up time on all his main rivals and now sits fifth overall, one minute 18 seconds behind Del Toro. Stage 10 results 1. Daan Hoole (Ned/Lidl-Trek) 32mins 30secs2. Giro d'Italia 2025 LIVE: Stage 10 updates, route and results as Brit Josh Tarling targets second stage win

The 2025 Giro d'Italia continues with the second of two time trials, this time a 28.6km run from Lucca to Pisa, finishing by the iconic Leaning Tower. The stakes are considerably higher with this one, though, coming just one stage after the Tuscan gravel wrought havoc on the chances of many GC contenders. The standings reshuffled on Sunday's sterrato stage to Siena, with Primoz Roglic crashing with 51km to go and struggling to get back into the front group before a puncture later on compounded his misery. The pre-race favourite is now down to 10th, more than two minutes behind new pink jersey Isaac del Toro. The Slovenian race favourite will have the chance to claw back time today, while British rider Josh Tarling will be hoping to secure the time-trial double after winning stage two's contre-la-montre in Albania.
