HBCU prospects eye opportunity in 2025 NFL Draft

Several HBCU football players will seek to begin their NFL journeys this weekend as the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off Thursday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Players from a myriad of colleges and universities hope to potentially hear their names called in the latter rounds of the draft on Saturday, despite the struggles for HBCU football players to secure selections in the league's annual event in recent years. The 2024 NFL draft marked the second time in four years – the 2021 NFL draft – that no players from HBCUs were selected during the event's seven rounds. In 2023, the New England Patriots selected former Jackson State cornerback Isaiah Bolden at No. 245 in the seventh round of the NFL draft. In the 2022 draft, four HBCU players were selected. They include Fayetteville State's Joshua Williams (Kansas City Chiefs, 4th round, No. 135), South Carolina State's Decobie Durant (Los Angeles Rams, 4th round, No. 142), Jackson State's James Houston IV (Detroit Lions, 6th round, No. 217) and Southern University's Ja'Tyre Carter (Chicago Bears, 7th round, No. 226). When adding in Tennessee State's Lachavious Simmons (7th round, No. 227) to the Bears, only eight players from the HBCU ranks have been selected in the last five NFL drafts. However, after this year's postseason bowl games and showcases like the HBCU Combine and the HBCU Legacy Bowl, here are 10 players to keep an eye on for the next three days, according to FCS Football Central draft analyst Gerald Huggins. Recent measles outbreak in Texas highlights urgent need for vaccination in Colorado

With the ongoing Measles outbreak in Texas, doctors are warning people of the importance of vaccinating their children. Dr. Joshua Williams, a pediatrician at Denver Health, says that while Denver's vaccination rates perform well compared to the state average, measles vaccination rates are below the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. "Denver's doing pretty well. We're still below what we like to see, especially for measles vaccinations -- 95% is where we want to be to prevent outbreaks of measles in our communities and in our schools," Williams said, "but overall, compared to how the rest of the state looks, we're doing pretty well." Schools like Stedman Elementary have a 93% vaccination rate which is stellar in comparison to other schools in the city. Williams emphasized the importance of community efforts in maintaining high vaccination rates. According to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, schools like Ashley Elementary, McMeen, and Denver Green School are below the 95% threshold. "People are kind of unaware if their child even has a vaccination card and when they might have gotten it in their home country. So sometimes there's some reconciliation work that has to happen on the back end," Williams said. Symptoms of the virus include fever, dry cough, and runny nose. Measles signs and symptoms appear around 10 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. "A single infected person can rapidly lead to a community outbreak, especially in a setting where most people are under-vaccinated," Williams said. He adds that concerns about under-vaccination in low-income and immigrant communities are likely due to challenges like access, lack of knowledge, and record-keeping. In other parts of the state, like Elbert County, the percentage rate of those vaccinated against measles (76.3%) is far below 95%. Williams says it's concerning and there might be a bit of skepticism in some areas regarding vaccines. He reassured parents about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, urging them to consult trusted healthcare providers with any questions. He also stressed that vaccination benefits the individual and the entire community, preventing outbreaks.

Chiefs CB Joshua Williams reveals gameplan for stopping the ‘Tush Push' vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs earned another trip to the Super Bowl with their AFC Championship win over the Buffalo Bills. The defense, led by Steve Spagnuolo, stopped one of Buffalo's most efficient plays. Chiefs cornerback Joshua Williams recently appeared as a guest on the 'Up and Adams Show' to discuss the multiple short-yardage stops in the AFC Championship victory. 'I don't blame the Bills for doing that; they have a big, strong Quarterback (Josh Allen) back there, 6'6 and 250 pounds or whatever. You know, that's usually an easy pickup right there for them. You know, a lot of the things we practiced during the week were short yardage, 3rd and 4th down.' said Williams. 'During the week he's (Steve Spagnuolo) telling us we have to get these stops, we have to get these stops. A lot of times you get into the game and it's not exactly what you did at practice because there's so much other factors. You being tired, them going right to the line, and quick hiking. I think our defense just did a good job getting up there. Everybody getting in their gaps, shooting their gaps, and you know, we picked up the stops because of that.' The Chiefs' defense stepped up tremendously in those moments and will have to take it to another level against the Philadelphia Eagles, who revolutionized the short-yardage play.
