Journalists Syndicate condemns Egyptian TV host interviewing of former Israeli foreign minister - Foreign Affairs

Khaled El-Balshy, president of Egypt's Journalists Syndicate, has denounced a recent televised interview between Egyptian TV presenter Emad El-Din Adeeb and former Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid, calling it a 'professional and humanitarian crime.' In a statement released on Friday, El-Balshy accused Adeeb of giving a platform to justify the 'war crimes perpetrated by the Israeli occupation army.' The interview with Lapid, who currently leads the opposition in Israel, aired on Thursday via Sky News Arabia from the United Arab Emirates. El-Balshy reaffirmed the syndicate's longstanding opposition to all forms of normalization with Israel, referring to a 1981 decision by its general assembly that opposes engagement with Israeli officials on professional, union-related, or personal levels. He noted that Adeeb was expelled from the syndicate in September 2020 following a disciplinary committee ruling over his dismissal of dozens of journalists from the now-defunct Al-Alam Al-Youm newspaper. Had Adeeb still been a member, El-Balshy said, disciplinary action would have been taken in response to the interview. He also urged journalists to adhere to the syndicate's anti-normalization stance, warning that any current member who violates it would face immediate internal investigation. The interview prompted widespread criticism on social media, with commentators accusing Adeeb of failing to challenge Lapid's falsehoods and of promoting normalization with Israel. Some critics said the broadcast could serve as a cautionary example in journalism schools. Veteran investigative journalist Yousri Fouda also criticized the interview. While acknowledging that journalists have a duty to seek truth from all sources — including adversaries — he questioned the editorial judgment behind the broadcast. 'The problem arises when you cannot answer these questions: Why this interview? Why now? And for what purpose?' he said. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Activists involved in the Global March to Gaza, which is protesting against Israel's bombardment of the territory and offering help to the Palestinians there, have described violent scuffles at the hands of Egyptian security forces. An Irish politician who was among the activists said his phone and passport were confiscated, and a march organizer said protesters were attacked as they headed to the border at Egypt's Rafah crossing. Newsweek has contacted the march organizers and the Egyptian Foreign Ministry for comment. The initiative seeks to highlight the plight of Palestinians in Gaza, who have faced a bombardment due to Israel's war on Hamas. The arrests in Egypt follow Israel's interception of a boat carrying activists on their way to Gaza, including environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg. Egypt has cracked down on pro-Palestinian activists even as it publicly condemns Israeli aid restrictions and has called for an end to the war. What To Know The Global March to Gaza is a civilian-led initiative to march from Arish, Egypt, to the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip beginning on Sunday. Once in Rafah, the goal was to set up a camp and work to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, provide humanitarian aid to the strip and protest against Israel's actions in the territory. Protest organizers said Egyptian authorities confiscated the passports of 40 activists at what they called a "toll booth turned checkpoint," with security forces detaining and using force, the Associated Press reported. Previously, hundreds arriving in Cairo were detained and deported to their home countries in Europe and North Africa. 'We are in danger. This is an emergency. We need help.' Melanie Schweizer, one of the organizers of the Global March to Gaza reports on the situation after Egyptian authorities and police attacked activists headed to the Rafah border and confiscated their passports. The… — Quds News Network (@QudsNen) June 13, 2025 The activists planned to gather on the road to the Sinai to prepare for Sunday's march, although authorities had not yet granted them authorization to travel through the sensitive area. The Tunisian and Libyan delegation of the march left Tunis, Tunisia, on June 9 but was stopped in the city of Sirte, about 585 miles from the Libya-Egypt border. Antonietta Chiodo, who traveled to Cairo from Italy, said activists had been detained, interrogated, treated harshly by Egyptian authorities or deported, the AP reported. In a video message, Melanie Schweizer, one of the march organizers, said police had attacked activists on their way to the Rafah border, confiscated their passports and forced them onto a bus escorted by Egyptian security forces. She said she saw a woman being beaten. Schweizer added: "We are in danger. This is an emergency. We need help." Paul Murphy, an Irish politician with the People Before Profit–Solidarity party, posted a video on social media in which he said passports had been confiscated and that he and his fellow activists were refusing to board the "deportation bus." Meanwhile, footage widely shared on social media purported to show activists receiving a hostile reaction from citizens in Egypt. What People Are Saying Melanie Schweizer, an organizer of the Global March on Gaza, said in a video: "This is an emergency. We have just been violently dragged into the buses. ... They started to push people and drag them violently outside. They have beaten people." She added: "This is a very shocking incident." The Global March on Gaza said in a statement: "We continue to urge the Egyptian government to permit this peaceful march." Irish politician Paul Murphy said in a video on X: "It's looking worrying that the Egyptian authorities are going to act to try to prevent our peaceful march to Gaza." What Happens Next Hicham El-Ghaoui, one of the group's spokespeople, said they would refrain from demonstrating until authorized by Egypt. Activists anticipated more arrests ahead of Sunday's protest.

Four Journalists and Their Families Martyred in Gaza

Amir Hagag Four journalists and their families, one of whom was lost contact two days ago, were killed in a new crime committed by the Israeli occupation. The Journalists Syndicate reported the martyrdom of journalist Nour Qandil, a martyr of free speech, her husband, journalist Khaled Abu Saif, and their daughter, after Israeli aircraft targeted their safe home in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The occupation assassinated photographer Aziz al-Hajjar in Bir al-Na'ja, north of the Gaza Strip, who was martyred along with his wife and children. In the town of al-Qarara in the south, two days after contact was lost with him, journalist Abdul Rahman Tawfiq al-Abadlah was killed. The Journalists Syndicate confirmed that the number of journalists martyred in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the aggression has exceeded all known figures in modern times, an unprecedented event in contemporary history, both in terms of the number of martyrs and the brutality of the direct targeting of their families and homes. No war in recent decades has witnessed such a large amount of bloodshed among camera and microphone carriers, reflecting the clear intent of the occupation to eradicate the truth. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called on the International Criminal Court to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and expedite the issuance of arrest warrants for the Israeli occupation leaders involved in the deliberate killing of Palestinian journalists and the targeting of their families and homes. It stated: "This systematic targeting of journalists is a full-fledged war crime that requires immediate prosecution and trial before international justice. The killers must not escape punishment, and the innocent blood of journalists must not remain mere numbers in cold UN reports." The Syndicate held the Israeli occupation fully and directly responsible for these heinous crimes, stressing that targeting journalists and their families is a terrorist act and a crime against humanity that will not go unpunished. It also warned that the silence of the international community and human rights organizations, and the inaction of UN institutions, constitutes clear complicity with the executioner and gives the killer further green light to perpetrate massacres against the free press. She stressed that the blood of the martyrs will not be shed in vain, and that Palestinian journalists will continue their mission, armed with faith, truth, and justice, even if it requires each journalist to carry their own coffin on their back while covering the massacre. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War
