Raichur City Corporation launches robotic scavenger to clean manholes

In a pioneering initiative, the Raichur City Corporation has deployed a robotic scavenger, Bandicoot, to clean manholes in the city. The initiative was officially launched recently by Corporation Commissioner Jubin Mohapatra who oversaw the robot in action on a manhole located in front of the municipal office near the old Deputy Commissioner's office premises. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mohapatra said, 'It is a moment of pride for Raichur City Corporation to be the first in the State to introduce this innovative technology. Bandicoot will play a key role in improving public services and ensuring safety while upholding the dignity of every individual involved in sanitation work.' He further added that the corporation is committed to making Raichur a clean, safe and smart city. 'We are continuously experimenting with new technologies. Eliminating manual scavenging and safeguarding sanitation workers is our top priority. With the use of Bandicoot, Raichur is setting an example for other cities across the State and the country,' he said. The Bandicoot, developed by Indian deep-tech company, Genrobotics, is among the most advanced and efficient manhole-cleaning devices currently available. Designed to mimic human motion, the robot uses extendable arms to clean manholes without the need for human entry. It is equipped with gas sensors to detect hazardous gases and cameras to operate effectively in low-light conditions, ensuring precision and safety. 'Bandicoot is more than just a machine. It represents progress, dignity and safety. It will be instrumental in ushering in responsible and future-ready sanitation management,' Mr. Mohapatra said. Raichur City Corporation's proactive adoption of robotic solutions marks a significant leap in municipal innovation and worker safety. The corporation's acting president, Sajid Sameer, several elected members and municipal officials from various departments were present during the launch.

Raichur fort illumination to be completed by end of July

The work of illuminating the historical fort at Raichur is all set to be completed by July 20. The district administration and the Raichur City Corporation have jointly taken up the initiative. On July 15, Deputy Commissioner Nitish K. and Corporation Commissioner Jubin Mohapatra inspected the preparations. Members of the team from the technical division of the corporation informed the officials that 20 beam lamps had been installed at a distance of 30 metres each. 'There is also a plan to light up the route from Basaveshwar Circle to the central bus stand, which is close to the fort,' the team members explained. The authorities intend to make the fort more beautiful with colourful illumination, and also spread awareness on social issues among the people through a sound and light show on national and State festivals, like Independence Day, Republic Day and Kannada Rajyotsava. Leksa Lighting Technologies Private Limited has bagged the contract to install around 400 beam-moving lights in the proposed areas. The work is likely to be completed in the next 10 days.

DC visits Raichur fort to assess infrastructure needed to attract tourists

Deputy Commissioner Nitish K. inspected key heritage sites in Raichur on April 22, focusing on improving basic infrastructure at the historic Mecca Darwaza and the hilltop fort area near the city bus stand. The Deputy Commissioner first visited Makka Darwaza to assess the possibilities for preservation and development. During the visit, he asked officials from the Raichur city corporation and the Planning Director of the Urban Development Cell to prepare a comprehensive report outlining the measures needed to enhance basic amenities and protect the site. Then, he inspected the nearby moat, which was found to be heavily silted. He instructed officials to remove the accumulated silt and carry out proper finishing work to restore the area. Later, the Deputy Commissioner visited the hilltop fort area adjacent to the bus stand. He emphasised the need to develop the area to attract tourists by installing street lights, benches, and other visitor-friendly infrastructure. He directed officials to prepare a separate proposal to repair scattered stone structures, install safety railings, and ensure easy access for tourists. He instructed engineers from the Mysuru Department of Archaeology, Museums, and Heritage to prepare and submit a formal proposal for these improvements, in line with heritage regulations. Additionally, he directed to dredge and preserve the khas bavi (well used by royal family) of the Nizam era, located near Aam Talab (water body for the common man), by giving necessary finishing touches. The DC was accompanied by Raichur City Corporation Commissioner Jubin Mohapatra, Urban Development Cell Planning Director Eranna Biradar, engineers from the Mysuru Department of Archaeology and Heritage, including Tarakesh, Assistant Engineer from the Public Works Department Mahesh, and Assistant Director of the Tourism Department Rajendra Jaldar.
